Extract from: "Historical Sketches of Hymns, Their Writers, and Their Influence." - "Rev. William Enfield, LL.D. This gentleman, the author of, - "Behold where, in a mortal form," was for many years an Arian minister, first at Liverpool and afterward in Norwich, both in England, and died in the latter city, 1797, at the age of fifty-six. For several years he was a professor of belles-lettres at the Unitarian Academy at Warrington, and was the author of several popular volumes." The Dictionary of National Biography lists: ENFIELD, WILLIAM (1741-1797), divine and author, was born of poor parents at Sudbury, Suffolk, on 29 March 1741. His earliest instructor was the Rev. William Hextall, a dissenting minister, by whose advice he was prepared for the ministry, and sent, in his seventeenth year, to the Daventry Academy, then conducted by Dr. Caleb Ash-worth. He was there educated as one of the alumni of the Presbyterian fund. In November 1763 he was ordained minister of the congregation of protestant dissenters at Benn's Gimien, Liverpool In 1770 he succeeded the Rev. John Seddon as tutor in belles-lettres and rector of the academy at Warrington. That institution was from various causes in a declining condition, and it was dissolved in 1783. In the meantime he established a sound reputation as a divine and author, and the degree of LL.D. was conferred on him by the University of Edinburgh on 8 March 1774. His pastoral duties to the Cairo Street Presbyterian congregation, which he had undertaken on first going to Warrington in 1770, were continued two years after the closing of the academy, and only relinquished on his receiving an invitation (in 1786) to the Octagon Chapel at Norwich. For some time after taking up his residence in that city he received pupils at his house, as he had done at Warrington, and among them were Denman, afterwards lord chief justice, and Maltby, subsequent bishop of Durham. Enfield was an amiable and estimable man, an influential writer and persuasive preacher, and was a leading figure in the literary society of both Warrington and Norwich. Dr. Paul Rader (born March 14, 1934) was General or leader of the Salvation Army from 1994 - 1999, and was the President of Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky from 2000-2006. - See Wikipedia .

Early edition (Speaker), first edition (Exercises), of these best-selling anthologies on elocution, recognized by the Monthly Review as "a valuable miscellany". In these works, William Enfield (1741-1797), a utilitarian minister and lecturer at Warrington's dissenting academy in Lancashire, collects extracts from classical and contemporary authors, including Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, and Cato, to serve as models for young readers. This edition of The Speaker is apparently unrecorded in ESTC, which identifies one octavo edition in 1774, with 376 pages. The present edition, by contrast, has 421, adding Sterne's Story of Le Fever at the start of Book VI. Alston VI 376; ESTC T71552. Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, vol. 52, 1775. 2 vols, octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines with six compartments panelled and with floral decoration in gilt, red morocco label, covers bordered with single gilt fillet, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled red. Engraved book label of William Leak (c.1796-1857) of the Poplars, Follifoot, on front pastedowns of both vols. Gathering K bound after S (Exercises). Judicious restoration to spine ends, very light bumping and wear, slight browning and foxing to endpapers and outer leaves: a very attractive pair.

A work designed for use as a textbook, by a friend of noted Unitarian Joseph Priestley. The book is dedicated to Priestley, and despite occasional professional disagreements the two were friends.
