About this Item: Westcliffe Publishers, Englewood, 1999. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 1st printing. Hardcover; oblong folio in smooth padded brown imitation leather cover; gilt-stamped & with square brass (we think) pictorial emblem attached. 224pp. Illustrated in both color and b/w. This book remarkably places Jackson photos side by side with the modern photos by John Fielder taken in almost the exact spot. Fielder took 156 of what he considered the 300 best Jackson photos. Most photos are full page & two to a page. A stunning group of vintage Jackson and modern photos of the Colorado landscape and Colorado towns. This copy is in over-all very good+ condition, but we have down-graded it to good because there is a small 1/16" x 1/4" nick in the cover near the top of the back edge of the spine. About this Item: (Englewood, CO: Westcliffe Publishers, 2000) 156793471, 2000. Large oblong 4to (315 x 415 mm); original brown leather, with lettering in gilt to spine and upper cover; central metallic medallion onlay to upper cover; marbled endpapers; pp. 224; lavishly illustrated in monochrome and full colour. Cover very slightly rubbed; merest trace of spotting to edges. Very good condition. A visually stunning book, which the publishers say is Colorado's all-time bestselling regional title. "The historic images of early west photographer William Henry Jackson capture a Colorado landscape both pristine and already dramatically affected by the onslaught of western civilization. Standing exactly where Jackson stood, and pointing his own camera in precisely the same direction, John Fielder has rephotographed Jackson's Colorado images to capture the often startling change that has occurred over the last century. The result is both breathtaking and stark, hopeful and disquieting. Jackson's and Fielder's photography is accompanied by thoughtful and provocative essays by respected experts in the environmental field: Roderick Nash, America's foremost wilderness historian and author of Wilderness and the American Mind ; Ed Marston, journalist and publisher of High Country News ; and Eric Paddock, Curator of Photography at the Colorado Historical Society. John Fielder describes the profound experience of traveling the state and seeing the landscape from Jackson's perspective, and reflects upon changes of the last 130 years." - From the publisher's website. About this Item: Englewood, Colorado : Westcliffe Publishers, 1999, 2000, 2000. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 224 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 32 x 42 cm ; Folio ; ISBN: 1565793471; 9781565793477 LCCN: 99-17277 ; LC: F777; Dewey: 978.8 ; OCLC: 40783859 ; brown leather covers with metallic embossed, square medallion affixed to front cover ; no dustjacket ; SIGNED by Fielder ; Colorado Book Award 2000 ; "In 1998, acclaimed Colorado nature photographer John Fielder drove 25,000 miles and backpacked another 500 in order to stand exactly where his 19th century equivalent, William Henry Jackson, stood. From 300 different vantage points, Fielder pointed his camera in exactly the same direction as Jackson once had in order to reveal the changes in the Colorado landscape that have occurred over more than a century. Lots of change, a little change, no change, change for the better, and change for the worse.you decide! From Denver to Georgetown and Aspen to Mesa Verde, the difference in Colorado's most historic towns and settlements is often remarkable and in some cases shocking. On the other hand, many of Jackson's original venues look much as they did a hundred years ago. You will revisit the photographs in the book time and again searching for more changes!" ; John Fielder is a nationally renowned nature photographer, publisher, teacher, and environmentalist. Born August 2, 1950 in Washington, D.C. he spent his first ten years in Connecticut and later lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. "In college at Duke University in North Carolina I studied accounting and occasionally painted pictures. In the summers I prospected for gold and silver for a steel company all around the West, including Colorado. Three days after graduation from college, I went to Colorado to seek my fortune. I worked in the department store business for eight years in Denver. As a hobby, I would hike around the mountains. When I was 23 years old, I had not painted for a while and decided to try photography. photograph predominantly with a large format 4 x 5 film view camera -- the kind that requires me to place a dark cloth over my head so that I can focus on a ground glass. Along with my camera, it requires that I carry 7 lenses, as well as 30 sheet film holders and about 400 sheets of color film in a very large pack, in order to be able to photograph for a week. With a large tripod, it all weighs about 65 pounds!" ; He is the photographer of more than 40 coffee table, guide, and children's books, all about Colorado." ; "John Fielder has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of Colorado's open space and wildlands. His photography has influenced people and legislation earning him recognition including the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award in 1993, and in 2011 the Aldo Leopold Foundation's first Achievement Award given to an individual. He was an original governor-appointed member of the lottery-related Board of Great Outdoors Colorado, and speaks to thousands of people each year to rally support for timely land use and environmental issues. " ; "Jackson had art training and was a more than competent painter, but as a photographer, he was strictly business. He was hired to document government surveys and later, to travel the railroads and find scenery that could be used to attract fare-paying tourists." Jackson did his job well, and left thousands of plate-glass negatives. Fielder went through the collection in 1997 and in the next year replicated 156 that appear in this book. Jackson's work was all black-and-white; Fielder sometimes deploys full color in his replications. Fielder explains the process well in his introduction, and notes that it wasn't always possible to stand exactly where Jackson stood, although he was always close. Fielder writes that he couldn't find any evidence that Jackson marked the spots where he took photos."--Ed Quillan, Colorado Central Magazine CoZine ; large book ; slight mark on front cover, else FINE.
