About this Item: The only son of the famed politician and orator was a noted attorney, U.S. District Attorney in Arizona (1915-20) and Collector of Customs for the port of Los Angeles (1938-53). ANS, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", n.p., 1931 December 4. Addressed to Henry T. Rainey (1860-1934, Illinois congressman). Very good. Paper clip stain at upper left, else clean and nice. On personal letterhead, Bryan notes, "I was much interested in the enclosed clipping from one of our local papers. Especially in what you have said regarding silver and the tariff question. The autobiography of William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), who ran for President three times but was never elected. He did, however, serve as Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. This book is signed by Mary Baird Bryan, William Jennings Bryan's wife, on a tipped-in page near the front. His wife completed the book after his death. Contains black and white plates. Typed letter states, "Your very kind letter at hand. I appreciate the generous confidence which you express, but I am not willing that my friends shall embarrass me by putting me in the attitude of a candidate. I believe that others are stronger, and it would only impair my ability to help them if I allowed myself to be considered. Thanking you again for your friendly interest, I am, Very Truly Yours, "W.J. Bryan". Bryan was a three time unsuccesful Democratic candidate for President, 1896-1900-1908, but still was powerful figure in the Democratic Party. Later, Bryan was appointed Secretary of State under President Wilson. In 1901, Bryan with his brother, Charles W. Bryan, founded, "The Commoner", a weekly newspaper in which Bryan expressed his political views. Bryan was also involved & aided the prosecution in the famous Scopes-Monkey Trial.
