Collated, complete.In his two volumes, Andrew Becket offers a critical study of Shakespeare"s language, attempting to defend and clarify the original meanings of Shakespeare"s words and phrases. He argues against perceived textual corruption by editors and critics of Shakespeare"s time.While each back strip tail bears the date 1815 in gilt, the Tegg set was published between 1812 and 1816.With the armorial bookplate of Henry Thomas Dunster to each front pastedown. In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips and board perimeters. Back strips lightly age toned, with a touch of rubbing to back strips. Tide mark of rear board of volume II, front board of volume VIII. Volume IV joints starting, with boards a touch tender. Rear joint head of volume X and front joint head of XI starting, with board firmly held. Front hinge of volume I, V, VI strained, but firmly held. Front hinge of volume II strained and somewhat tender. Rear hinge of volume II strained but firmly held. Front blank of volume II detached and loosely inserted. First gathering of volume I - including title page and frontispiece - working loose, otherwise internally firmly bound. Pages bright, with instances of spotting to each volume, significant spotting to plates, and significant spotting to leaves surrounding plates. Very Good. book.
