Some creasing and chipping to title pages and frontispiece, foxing to a few pages first and last but otherwise very sound and clean internally. Binding with crest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne Grammar school on front board, school prize label on pastedown, not much wear but joints neatly reinforced with paper.

Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). An attractive leather bound copy of the complete works of Shakespeare. An attractive leather bound copy of the complete works of Shakespeare, edited by Charles and Mary Charles Cowden Clarke. Both Charles and Mary are best known for their works on Shakespeare, and the former delivered important lectures on the Elizabethan playwright between 1834 and 1856. The present work includes the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare, as well as his poems The Lover's Complaint, The Passionate Pilgrim, and the Phoenix and the Turtle. There is evidence that a bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown. In a full red calf binding. Externally, very smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards and the joints. The calf is lightly worn to the tail of the spine. The rear hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing to the front and rear of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.

Nice b/w frontispiece; classic picture of Shakespeare by Martin Droeshout/J. D. Armytage. Front blank pages has some very slight foxing, but I do not see evidence of foxing anywhere else in the book. No date of publication, though circa 1860s (Cassell Petter & Galpin existed in this configuration from 1858 to 1878). Complete set in three volumes, including comedies, histories, and tragedies. Burgundy dyed leather over spines and corners, with buckram burgundy cloth over boards. Beveled edges. Gilt stamped lettering on spine and top cover. Raised spine bands create six compartments on each spine. Leather is rubbed and scuffed, with a little loss of some lettering on spine. Light wear at corners and spine ends. There is a little light scattered foxing, mostly seen on first and last few leaves, and more so on tissue guards than the actual leaves. All three volumes remains tight, and are otherwise very clean and intact. Due to size and weight additional charges will apply for Priority and/or International shipping.
