WYNN, William O. A Brief Sketch of the Life and Ups and Downs of An Ex-Confederate Soldier Also Three Years A Cowboy on the Frontier of Texas Before the Civil War and A Sketch of My Pioneer Days in the Early Settling of Texas [wrapper title]. [Garland, Tx.: News Print, 1928]. [15]pp. including a photographic frontispiece of the author. Original printed wrappers. Short tear, a small chip, and light soiling to wrappers. Very good. The penultimate printing of this intriguing pamphlet recounting Wynn's personal experiences as a Confederate soldier, and his life on the Texas frontier both before and after the war. In 1916, Wynn published a similarly-titled book called A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF AN OLD CONFEDERATE SOLDIER, ALSO THREE YEARS AS A COWBOY ON THE FRONTIER OF TEXAS (Howes W725) published in Greenville, Texas. The present work is likely an extraction from this larger work printed to help Wynn make ends meet, printed in Garland, Texas (about seventy miles from Wynn's home in Sulphur Springs). Other printings of this work occurred in 1924 and 1927 (both probably printed in Greenville) and in 1931 (printed in Sulphur Springs, according to Dornbusch). This 1928 imprint is decidedly more professionally executed than the 1927 printing, with a much more clearly printed photographic frontispiece. The imprint date is based on the fact that Wynn was born in 1846, and writes in the Preface that this work is printed in his "82nd year." The work includes a poem by Wynn titled, "The Battle of Shiloh Hill." Excessively rare, with only two copies in OCLC, at the Huntington Library and BYU.DORNBUSCH 1096 (ref). HOWES W725 (ref). OCLC 83377515.
