About this Item: Pergamon Press Ltd, first edition, Oxford, 1967, 1967. Half-rexine and cloth, top edge gilt, 4to, 28 cm, 365 pp, 16 folding drawings. From the blurb: "More than a century and a half ago a paper-making machine was invented in France by Louis Robert and soon afterwards, in 1801 to be exact, it was patented in England. The Fourdriniers then became associated with the famous machine which still bears their name, and in the hands of Donkin and others, Robert's original design was developed throughout many years. At an early stage in paper-making machinery design John Dickinson patented a cylinder-mould machine which progressed consistently up to its eventual adoption as the multi-vat board machine of the present day. Other men carried out noteworthy pioneering work - Didot, Gamble and especially Donkin, to mention but some - and there were numerous and varied changes and developments in both overall and detailed aspects of paper-making machines throughout many years. The story is one of fascinating interest, yet, until the publication of this book, it is one which has not been told in anything like a full and comprehensive manner. In one respect alone it is unique for the author received permission to quote - for the first time - from Donkin's diaries. The volume, which is well illustrated, therefore forms an invaluable historic document, in addition to comprising a detailed record of innumerable informative facts." Contents include: Introduction; 1. The First Paper-Making Machine; 2. The First British Paper-Making Machine Patent; 3. The Paper-Making Machine of 1807; 4. The Fourdriniers' Struggle For Development; 5. The Chain-Mould Paper-Making Machine; 6. The Dickinson Cylinder-Mould Machine; 7. The Chain-Mould and Fourdrinier Machines Combined; 8. The Invention of the Dandy-Roll or Riding-Roller; 9. The Dickinson Suction-Roll and Other Developments; 10. Progress in Paper-Making, 1830-35; 11. Improvements to Fourdrinier Machines; 12. Early Victorian Paper-Making Machines: Modifications and Inventions; 13. The Bryan Donkin Company; 14. Paper-Making in the I860's; 15. Standardization of the Paper-Making Machine, 1870-90; Appendixes 1-6; Biographies of the Paper-Machine Makers: 1. Nicolas Louis Robert; II. The Didot Family; III. John Gamble; IV. Henry Fourdrinier; V. John Hall, 1764-1836; VI. Bryan Donkin; VII. John Dickinson, 1782-1869; VIII. The Ibotson Family; IX. The Bertrams; X. George Tidcombe and the Watford Engineering Work; XI. Bentley and Jackson; XII. Early Pioneers in the United States; XIII. Escher Wyss of Zurich; XIV. Johann Voith; Index. From a review by Michael L. Turner in The Private Library: "The work is clearly the result of many years of private research, to which has been added the accumulation of a lifetime's experience within the industry. It is in this practical familiarity with the machines - the fact that the author himself has been faced with the problems of making paper on such machines - that much of the special value of the book lies. The subject is technical and a technical expert was needed to write it up." Very Good in a Good dustwrapper which is slightly edgeworn with old tape-repairs on the reverse.and a small sticker shadow on the spine-panel. Seller Inventory # ABE-33535
