About this Item: Cape Catley, Whatamango Bay. NZ, 1999. Card Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Map, Diagram (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Mystery of the Mikhail Lermontov (ML)" Tom O'Connor's study of the loss of this massive cruise liner in 1986 in constricted waters in Queen Charlotte Sound, (at the northern tip of NZ's South Island), examines all; the events leading up to the ship's grounding, its eventual loss, the rush to evacuate the more then 400 passengers and 300+ crew members in a hazardous and much delayed night-time rescue. Fortunately there was only fatality, one of the ship's refrigeration engineers, who was below decks close to where the ship first struck rocks. As a journalist working in the area where the ML was lost the author was familiiar with the sequence of events, had good contacts and the decision to produce the book had its catalyst in his news coverage of the saga. The result is a well-rounded, comprehensive and factual account of all aspects, with the rescue effort (delayed by the reluctance by the master of the ML to act) particularly graphic and including interviews with a number of passengers. many from Australia and well as NZers --- the ship was bound for Sydney with a planned visit to Milford Sound. Formal inquiries into the loss of the ML failed to establish why the pilot at the time, a competant master mariner and harbourmaster at Picton, where th ML had been berthed that day, should attempt to navigate the huge ship through a narrow channel. This was remarkable in view of his expert knowlege of the Sound. and its hazards. In the backround is the sub-plot of the difficulties being experienced in the Marlborough Harbour Board of which the harbour master was then the board's acting chief executive. Tom O'Conner has woven a fascinating account of NZ's most sensational maritime accident. He asked all the right questions about the wreck, explored all the conspiracy theories, but was unable to solve the mystery of "Why? the ML was directed into such tight and treacherous waters. First edition of 1999 ,200 pages including bibliography and glossary, 26 colour photos, six b/w photos plus drawing of ML and map of Queen Charlotte Sound. Colour pictorial card covers VG+ with light crease lower front corner, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Seller Inventory # 004619

About this Item: Cape Catley 1999 Paperback, 1999. Condition: Good. Here is a truly remarkable story of mystery, suspense, acute danger and extraordinary courage - a modern shipwreck that could so easily have taken hundreds to their deaths. In Death of a Cruise Ship, author Tom O'Connor presents a cross-section of the passengers, the entertainers and the crew as they move through a normal day ashore. Then when the worst kind of trouble occurs and the ship hits rocks, we follow these people through all their varied reactions and concerns, and sometimes desperate attempts to get free of the sinking ship. Specially telling are the thoughts and feelings of the Russian captain while the bravery of the rescuers, New Zealanders and Russian alike, contributes to one of the great sagas of the sea. Journalists' classic questions of who, what, when, where and how are followed through in this highly charged and gripping story. 200 pages. Seller Inventory # 1088600
