Large 8vo (245 x 180 mm), 100 pp, illustrated with b&w photographs, text-figures, maps, appendix, bibliography, index. Papered boards in lightly rubbed and edge-worn dust-wrapper. The book tells the story of the introduction of three Garratt locomotives to New Zealand in 1929 and their failure in the North Island trunk line work for which they were planned. Also included in the book is an outline of the many proposals in the 1920s for other designs of Garratt locos, in some instances for work on the 1 in 15 Rimutaka Incline, and the final chapter surveys the life and work of the 'G' class 4/6/2 type locos into which the engine units from the ill-fated Garratts were incorporated in 1937.
