About this Item: Halcyon Press, Auckland, 1999. Card Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Colour Lure Photos (illustrator). 1st. New Zealand has an international reputation among sporstmen for the quality of its trout fishery. Less well known, outside the true enthusiasts, is the equally high quality of the lures (flys) made and used in the rivers lakes and streams. Derek Quilliam points out early in his introduction to this fine publication that "this is not a fly tier's manual." He said his book aimed to be a compendium of NZ trout lures past and present to provide a comprehensive reference for those "wishing to tie up their own stock of proven lures." Topics covered in the nine chapters range over Bronwyn Wilson's series, Rotorua and Taupo regional patterns, Taupo smelt petterns and the South Island way. Others disclose some unconventional lures ("Bottle tops and biros"), killer lures and working with deer hair. The feature of this book. however, must been its display of colour photos of individual lures (said to be nearly 500 of them) all printed on fine glossy paper. These begin the book, running from page 17 to 80, most of pages displaying eight images, the last few show variations in display and image size. The images are captioned with the lure name and this is the reference point into the alphabetical description section where each lure's technical features is listed, including its originator, materials used and placement on the lure, some general notes follow. The alphabetical section runs from page 81 to 235. Subsequent pages cover obscure or old lures, photography notes, bibliograpghy, postscript and credits to those who prepared the lures for the photographs. Another fine publication from Halcyon Press, first edition of 1999, 256 pages, Colour pictorial card covers, with flaps front and rear are VG+, text block is NF, no inscriptions. This large and heavy book, just under 1 kg unpacked, would incur additional postage, particularly for international delivery. Seller Inventory # 004691
