About this Item: Halcyon Press, Auckland, 1992. Hard Cover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos (illustrator). 1st. Wapiti were introduced to NZ from North Ameprica in 1905 when 18 of the animlals were released on the wild and isolated wilderness of the South Island's Fiordland. The author, Jack McKenzie had a half-century of interest in and connerctions with the Wapiti herd. For him the word Wapiti even had "more than a touch of magic." His excellent book on this association with these animals tells of the origins of the NZ herd, how they became established in a new environment, were open game for licenced hunters from 1923 the 1934, when prorections for the herd were removed. Although the area they ranged over was limited, its rugged terrain and isolation offered them some natural protection, which was enhanced as hunters of deer were few in the war years 1939-45. In that time, however, many deer species increased to "pest" proportions and all introduced animals became subject to official culling and unlimited hunting. In spite of their relatively small numbers Wapiti were included. Outraged hunters opposed these Governmnt policies and thus began a long battle with the bureaucrats to protect Wapiti, which forms an important aspect of the author' account. In the 1970s the threat to the Wapiti increased dramatically when commercial hunting of deer, including hellicopter shooting expanded rapidly. As Jack McKenzie compiled his record of the life and near-death of the NZ Wapiti herd it still faced mulitple threats which included removel and re-location as well as extermination. The fight to prevent this happening attracted strong public support, not only from the hunting fraternity, but this failed to move entrenched political and bureaucrartic policies. While there was no outright victory some concessions were gained and Wapiti in greatly reduced numbers survive in the Fiordland wilderness. In addition to its natural history and hunting content "Mr Wapiti" is also a grand account of the David and Golioth battle to save NZ's Wapiti.
