[From front jacket flap] OId Redondo, 'A Pictorial History of Redondo Beach, seeks to capture the spirit of this unique California beach town, and its colorful history, from the vantage point of the 90th anniversary of the city's incorporation. The first people here, of course, were the Chowigna Indians, leading their unhurried lives by the old salt lake. Next- came the Spaniards under Caspar de Portola and Father Junipero Serra. In their expedition was Sergeant Juan Jose Dominguez, who received the vast reaches of the Rancho San Pedro, including present-day Redondo, as his discharge bonus. There followed the first settlements. the advent of the railroads, the epic?but unsuccessful? battle for the title "Port of Los Angeles. Playing major roles were the formidable Dominguez sisters, two doughty riverboat captains, Ainsworth and Thompson, and that ubiquitous man, Henry E. Huntington. Years of excitement followed, during which were built the legendary Hotel Redondo, the Plunge, the Pavilion, the Mandarin Ballroom. the Lightning Racer roller coaster, the piers, and a great- power plant. Carnation fields bloomed and the fishing was so good that it was hard to tell tall tales about it. Then when the hotel was torn down in the ?20s,Redondo seemed to have passed its peak. San Pedro was the Port of Los Angeles, the automobile was writing 'quietus' to the stately red cars, gamblers took over El Paseo and even anchored offshore. Terrible storms lashed the front, and property values declined steeply before World War II.But determined and tenacious Redondo officials, business people and citizens persuaded federal officials to cut red tape in aid of breakwaters, moles and harbor. Oil drilling revenues played their part, as did a lively dialogue between those who loved Redondo as it was and those who favored redevelopment. And so there is the Redondo Beach of today - a progressive yet still charming city of 60,000 residents with world-renowned space research center, fine shops and shopping centers, one of America?s proudest high schools, a beautiful and historic old library - and King Harbor and the Redondo piers.
