His occupation was listed as "rabbit trapper". He sailed from Melbourne with the 9th Reinforcement for the 7th Battalion, reaching Gallipoli shortly before the evacuation and only spending 2 weeks in the line. In September 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for action on the Western Front in Belgium where he single-handedly raided a German machine gun-post. Following the Armistice, he was attracted to the prospect of a tour of duty with the North Russia Relief Force. Pearse, along with 150 other Australian, joined the 45th Battalion , the Royal Fusiliers, the British Army, where he was soon promoted to Sergeant. It was during the North Russia Campaign, under the command of Lionel Sadleir-Jackson, where he was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery, devotion to duty and self-sacrifice during an action against an enemy battery. Unfortunately, Sergeant Pearse was killed a minute after his gallant action took place and he was buried at Souset Cemetery, North Russia. **The book has rubbing along the spine.**.
