Original Red Cloth Boards. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Martin Munkacsi (illustrator). Second Edition. 2011. 416pp. B&W images and plates throughout. "The great fashion photographer Martin Munkacsi was born in Hungary in 1896, spent the 20s and 30s in Berlin, and immigrated to New York City in 1934. For many years the best paid photographer of his time and a profound influence on photographers like Richard Avedon, his work was out of fashion at the time of his death in 1963. Recently, Munkacsi has emerged from history as one of the most significant talents of the twentieth century, having shaped the beginnings of modern photojournalism, set in motion a previously static medium and combined fact-finding accuracy with a highly formal aesthetic standard. Munkacsi was an outstanding representative of the 'Neues Sehen' (New Way of Seeing), certainly photography's weightiest contribution to advanced art. His fashion and sports photography were both groundbreaking and unmatched. Up until now, however, all this work has been scattered throughout the world, and much of it has been lost, although the Ullstein Archive in Berlin maintains an extensive collection of Munkacsi's work from Hungary and Germany. Martin Munkacsi gathers and assembles this mid-century master's images as never before. It contains pictures from each of his artistic phases and several photographs and reports that haven't been seen since their initial magazine publications. A major collection featuring 318 tritones, it offers a valuable glimpse of photography's tense, technology-obsessed, glamorous and contradictory beginnings." The jacket is covered with removeable clear plastic for protection. Book and unclipped jacket both in excellent condition. No inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

VERLAGSINFO: Martin Munkacsi was never at a loss for self-confidence and was proud to be the best-paid photographer of his time. One of the most significant photographers of the twentieth century, Munkacsi shaped the beginnings of modern photojournalism and set into motion the previously static medium of photography. Munkacsi combined journalistic accuracy with a highly formal aesthetic standard, and was an outstanding representative of the «Neues Sehen«, arguably photography s weightiest contribution to advanced art. He defied convention by incorporating motion, dramatic camera angles and whimsy into his work, creating fashion and sports photography that was groundbreaking and unmatched. Munkacsi s work unfortunately did not remain intact: scattered throughout the world, it was to an extent lost. Only the Ullstein Archive in Berlin maintains a fairly extensive collection of his life s work from his days in Hungary and Germany. This second-edition of Martin Munkacsi combines pictures from all Munkacsi s artistic phases with images and bodies of work that have not been seen since their initial magazine publication. Munkacsi s work reveals a tense, technologyobsessed, glamorous and contradictory epoch. Martin Munkacsi was born in in Koloszvár, Hungary, published his first sports photos in 1921, and in 1927 moved to Berlin where he worked for Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, Koralle, Uhu, Die Dame, Vu, Modern Photography and other international magazines. By the time he immigrated to the USA in 1934, Munkacsi had revolutionized fashion photo - graphy. He worked under contract for Harper s Bazaar, published works in Life to great acclaim and photographed the influential series «How Americans Live« for Ladies Home Journal. Munkacsi also worked as an advertising photographer and cameraman for film productions. Largely forgotten, he died in New York in 1963. Alle Preise inkl. MwSt.
