About this Item: Oxford University Press, London, 1970. Original Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First edition. 417 pages. With (folding) frontispiece, maps, plates & illustrations. Dustjacket (price-clipped). Slight wear to spine, covers, corners & dustjacket. Former owner's name on front free endpaper. In previous volumes Professor Marder has carried his work from 1904, when Admiral Sir John Fisher became First Sea Lord, through the launching of H.M.S. Dreadnought in 1906, to the outbreak of war with Germany and the crisis of the U-boat campaign in 1917, which almost brought Britain to defeat. This last volume completes the story and shows the Navy triumphant, if not wholly jubilant, in the events of 1918 and 1919. The convoy system brought its reward at last, the U.S. Navy arrived in European waters, the raid on Zeebrugge in April 1918 was a striking exploit that raised morale, and in November Beatty received the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet under the Armistice terms. There ensued eight frustrating months until the signing of the Peace Treaty in June 1919; on 21 June the German crews scuttled their ships at Scapa Flow, and an era of naval history came to an end. The higher direction of naval affairs in the concluding months of the War and during the Armistice, the personalities involved, the state of inter-allied relations, and the dawn of postwar problems, are treated with all Professor Marder's authority and skill, concluding with a retrospect of the whole period. This volume also contains the important Bibliography for the entire work. The jacket photograph shows the German dreadnought Bayern sinking at Scapa Flow when the German warships interned there were scuttled by their crews on 21 June 191 9.Looking back from the end of the ^twentieth century, one event above all others dominates world politics: in 1917 mass revolution threw the Russian Empire into turmoil and a very determined authoritarian regime began the task of dragging the biggest country in the world into the modern era. More than seventy years after that event, the Soviet Union is once more in turmoil as Mikhail Gorbachevâs perestroika and glasnost take effect. Size: Octavo (standard book size).
