The mystery, as it reverberates through families, friendships, & the corridors of power, will open up even the loneliest-seeming corners of the crowded city. And when the blackout of July 13, 1977, plunges this world into darkness, each of these lives will be changed forever. 'City on Fire' is an unforgettable novel about love & betrayal & forgiveness, about art & truth & rock 'n' roll: about what people need from each other in order to live . . . & about what makes the living worth doing in the first place. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: GARTH RISK HALLBERG was born in Louisiana & grew up in North Carolina. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Signed by the author in thin black felt pen at the bottom of title page beneath his printed name. He made an absolutely wonderful presentation at Saint Louis County (Missouri) Library headquarters on Tuesday, September 27, 2016; his use of hand and arm gestures can only be described as very "Italian!"; he talked about the genesis of the book, read a selection about Charlie (pgs. 224-231 ["You're driving me home"]) and a very engaging question and answer period with the audience. I showed him the signature & he commented that he had signed 9000 books in a warehouse and this looked like #7400 because of its illegibility; below his existing signature, he printed the location and date ("St. Louis / 9.27.16") then atop the "C" of the title, he doodled a four-building city.
