Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - An early advocate for the separation of church and state, the German jurist and philosopher Christian Thomasius (16551728) was a reformer who sought both to liberate politics from religious domination and to protect religion from political abuse. Writing at the close of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth century, Thomasius argued for religious toleration while simultaneously defending the role of the sovereign in preserving a secular peace. -- The six texts collected in Essays on Church, State, and Politics are the first English translations ever of Thomasius's work on the scope and limits of civil power in relation to the church. The topics addressed are natural law; the condition of the universities; the status of adiaphora, or religiously "indifferent things"; the extent and limits of princely power; and the questions of whether heresy and witchcraft should be considered crimes. In these vivid and combative pieces, Thomasius campaigns for religious toleration, the state's withdrawal from the moral arena, and its right of oversight in all matters affecting social peace. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius's work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius's writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same time, owing to the depth of intellectual resources at his disposal, these works constitute a major contribution to the broader discussion of the relation between the religious and political spheres.
