About this Item: Würzburg: Ergon, 2008. Gebundene Ausgabe. Condition: Wie neu. XXXIII, 403 S. Gebraucht, aber gut erhalten. - The Sultan Hasan Complex in Cairo is a well known Mamluk building that attracted the attention of visitors since it was constructed in 1357. It also attracted the attention and efforts of scholars of the history of Islamic art and architecture. Several interpretations have been presented about its design. This book focuses on the architecture and decoration of the Complex in its historical, urban and stylistic context. It tries to position the stylistic aspects within the development of Mamluk art and architecture rather than in distant influences. It also explores the distinct nature of the design of the Sultan Hasan Complex, which reflects the individual function of its components on one hand, and on the other, incorporates these components into a unified architectural and decorative scheme. This study includes preliminary reconstructions of the geometric grids that underline the composition of the plan and some of the elevations in the Complex. It identifies common compositional schemes that permeate the organization of the surface decoration of the building; and suggests that the building embodies a conscious attempt to integrate the plan, elevation and decoration in a harmonious composition. By relying on the wagfdocuments of the complex, as well as the primary sources, and archaeological observation this study identifies the original edifice and it readdresses the question of its architect, or architects, suggesting that two individuals may have designed this remarkable building.
