About this Item: Winterdown Books, Folkestone, 1990. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. First bibliography of the famous English physician (1624-89), sometimes called the English Hippocrates from his insistence to rely on clinical observations as opposed to dogma and tradition. For a long time he was held in vague esteem for the success of his cooling (or rather expectant) treatment of small-pox, for his laudanum (the first form of a tincture of opium), and for his advocacy of the use of Peruvian bark in quartan agues --- in other words, the use of quinine-containing chinchona bark for treatment of malaria caused by Plasmodium malariae. There were, however, those among his contemporaries who understood something of Sydenham's importance in larger matters than details of treatment and pharmacy, chief among them being the talented Richard Morton. Limited edtion of 375 copies only. An important book in the history of medicine. Some rubbing and nicks to jacket. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 044410

About this Item: Kein Einband. Folkestone 1990, 8°, XVI, 190 pp., 32 Abb., OLnBd. "The first bibliography of the famous English physician (1624-89) sometimes called the 'English Hippocrates' from his insistence on clinical observation rather than dogma". Despite Sydenham's fame, no comprehensive account of his published work has previously appeared. The present book describes all the known editions and related works, amounting to some 160 entries in all. Some of these like the original 17th Century editions are well known but many have been overlooked due to their rarity, such as 'A brief rule to guide the common-people of New England' (Boston, 1678), 'Integri processus' (Venice, 1696), 'Dissertatio epistolaris' (Frankfurt, 1683) or 'Formulae medicinae' (Oxford, 1844). In addition to the usual bibliographical details, each entry gives the location of copies in libraries throughout Europe and North America, with shelf-marks for those copies seen. Although Sydenham's biography is described elsewhere, this book includes new information on his editors, publishers and contemporaries. The final section of the book lists some 400 references and is believed to comprise every published study of Sydenham, as well as related papers and monographs. Buch. Seller Inventory # 14775

Londini : typis J. Heptinstall, impensis Walteri Kettilby, ad Insigne Capitis Episcopi in Coemeterio D. Pauli, MDCCV. Kranken, p.40 The title of the "English Hippocrates", given to Sydenham by his contemporaries. He was one of the greatest figures in the history of internal medicine, and he built his reputation on his first accounts of such conditions as the malaria fevers of his time, gout, scarlatina, measles, pneumonia, etc. Important collection of the works of the Father of English Medicine. This translation does not include the 'Processus integri' (Meynell) Meynell, G. About this Item: London: Printed for Edward Cave,? 1742., 1742. 8vo, 1 leaf, pp. xi, (i) blank, xxiii, 2 leaves, pp. 623, 12 leaves. Contemporary calf, sides and spine compartments ruled with double gilt border, red morocco label. Early signatures of John Brown and J. Winterflood on front free endpaper, signature of Martin Cottingham at top of title. First edition of Swan?s translation, and the first publication of Samuel Johnson's seven-page ?Life of Dr. Sydenham.? The publisher of this edition, Edward Cave, was the originator of the Gentleman?s Magazine, which printed some of Samuel Johnson?s first published work. It seems likely that Swan was introduced to Cave who commissioned this translation and then commissioned a biography from Johnson. The ?Life? was reprinted in the Gentleman's Magazine later in the year (December). Swan?s was the second edition in English of Sydenham?s complete works, after Pechey?s of 1696, but it was Swan?s edition that became the main English source for Sydenham?s thoughts until that of R.G. Latham in two volumes (1848?50) superseded it. ?The sound judgement and acute observations of Thomas Sydenham, the English Hippocrates, freed clinical medicine from the last vestiges of medievalism, and set the pattern for further progress? (Dewhurst, Dr. Thomas Sydenham (1624?1689), p. vii. Meynell, A Bibliography of?Sydenham, 15.1. Fleeman, A bibliography of?Johnson, 42.11SW/1. Courtney, p. 12. Chapman and Hazen, pp. 125?126.
