About this Item: PHI Learning, 2007. Softcover. Condition: New. First edition. Applied geography, a new frontier in geographic discipline, distinguishes itself from other branches of geography through the application of geographical knowledge and its techniques in solving practical problems of the land and the environment. Explorations in Applied Geography is a felicitation volume in honour of Professor L.R. Singh, Department of Geography, University of Allahabad, who has established his international credentials as a leading exponent of Applied Geography. He considers public policy to be one of the applications of applied geographic principles, since many problems facing society today have a geographical dimension. To Professor L.R. Singh, Applied Geography is the strategy of the trinity of men, space and resources which need to be harmonized in advancing human well-being. This volume, contributed by geographers of eminence within the country and from other parts of the globe, focuses on the following thrust areas: ? Natural and environmental hazards ? Environmental change and management ? Challenges of the human environment ? Application of techniques of spatial analysis In a nutshell, the book emphasizes the important proactive role that the Applied Geography must play in the formulation of public policies and programmes for sustainable human development. Live storage at present constitutes only 10% of the total water potential of the country. Hand in hand technology development in drilling and pumping methods has paved the way for massive exploitation of groundwater mainly for irrigation (85%) and for industry and domestic purposes (15%). Such a localized over drawl of ground water has to be compensated adequately by harnessing surplus monsoonal flows along with expansion of water storage capacities in enhancing the water availability. Stress would need to be laid on conjunctive use of surface and ground water in irrigated commands. Tube wells and wells are the major sources of irri. Seller Inventory # 63966

The Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS) are the corpus of accumulated folk knowledge gained through trial and error through millennia. This folk knowledge therefore has a parental relationship to the elite science. The micro variations of the ambient harsh environment of the hills have been responsible for the extremely rich community knowledge systems and a biodiversity necessary for sustainability of human life here. The mountain people also cultivate many lesser known crops and medicinal plants and this biodiversity is of immense value for the future for genetics health and breeding. Most of the village people depend upon the Himalayan medicine system rather than on the allopathic medicine. There are a lot of folk medicines used extensively to treat animals. The Naulas (water springs) are marvels of traditional hydraulic technology and still serve the demand of clean potable water. The traditional domestic architecture has enabled people to build quake resistant houses. There is a traditional technology for distilling alcohol for drinking purposes and also for making fermented food and beverages. They also have a developed technology for dyeing wool and cotton using a natural dyes. The Kumauni folklore is a veritable treasure of folk knowledge. For an integrated and sustainable development of the hills it is necessary to use traditional technologies. The TKS also helps to understand archeological remains of domestic and temple architecture hydraulic structures and burial remains even of rock art. Despite the tremendous importance and value of traditional knowledge especially in the hilly areas such as Uttaranchal it is at a risk of becoming extinct for various reasons. We do hope that this book will help preserve the traditional knowledge systems of Uttaranchal as also emphasise their use for sustainable development. 174 pp. Seller Inventory # 67359

Marginalization of Dalit women in Bama’s Karukku/Priyanka Vaidya. Select bibliography. Dalit literature is now over-arching the vernacular languages. Written often in the material or territorial, it intends to shrug out of the insular to the global. It has, through the politics of deconstructing its lived experience, brought about a change in borders, a rethinking of the margins and an erasure of boundaries and most importantly valorized a language of power through dissent. The present anthology is a humble effort to bring the neglected parts of the Indian social fabric into the mainstream, by cogitating over the configurations of Dalit literature, its multifarious dimensions and potentialities in developing a new consciousness and identity among Dalits, besides trying to sensitize the non-Dalits with the issues and concerns of Dalits through different genres of their literary productions. At this juncture what is more important and engaging is the fact of sufferings of Dalits because the period of their pain, agony, misery, humiliation, exploitation and inhuman treatment they were subjected to is as old and long as is the existence of any institution. English is the only tool that can connect the Dalits in India. Being the language of modernity, it can connect people around the globe to the Dalit experiences. It is a creative and exclusive effort to look at the scene in a heightened moment of time from the window to scan the past history of Dalits, assess the present and imagine the probable future and its impact on the society. The book title Organic Farming and Management of Biotics Stresses is based on Organic Agriculture and sustainable pests and disease management. Sustainable development is the ultimate destination of any program launched by any country at any period of time. Modern agriculture is mostly governed by non renewable energy where billions of chemicals are consumed annually. That is working against natural balance and taking the human society from stable to instable position. Therefore, there is an urgent global need to find an effective alternative to synthetic chemicals and fertilizer use, which can ensure increase in crop yield and at the some time sustain the eco-system in its natural conditions. Organic farming is an agricultural system which aims at utilization of the land in a way that the soil is kept dynamic with living activities and in good health, at the same time keeping the environment clean, maintaining the ecological balance and providing stability to the production level without polluting soil, water and air. The matter of the book has divided into two parts i.e. Organic Agriculture and Management. In the part of organic agriculture gives adequate information about history, scope issues, challenges constraint and prospects of organic farming in India as well as in the world, role of humans and bio-fertilizer in organic farming. Second part of book gives details idea about management strategies of pest and disease in organic farming using bio-agents vasicular arbascular mycorrhiza, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria plant product vermi cimpost etc. The wide range of issues discussed in this book which will provide new informations to the all readers regarding organic agriculture and innovative disease management strategies.
