An exceptional copy of the first edition/first printing, book and dustcover flawless, as new. Light green paper-covered boards, tan cloth-covered spine, 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, 422 pp., index. "Here, published for the first time, is the private record of a passionate friendship and a literary romance which prevailed, against many odds, through the long course of two writers' lives. It began with a casual lunch on the periphery of Paris late in 1931, when Anais Nin, the twenty-eight-year-old wife of Hugh Parker Guiler, a young woman at that moment poised for intellectual and physical adventure, was introduced to Henry Miller, the 'gangster author,' as a friend had jokingly dubbed him, who would be forty years old the following December 26." About this Item: San Diego: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1986-7, 1986. 2 volumes octavo. Original dark blue quarter cloth, tan boards, spine blocked in pink foil; and original quarter very pale yellowish pink cloth, very pale yellowish green boards, lettered on the spine in bronze foil, both with unclipped dust jackets. The first-named a little rubbed on the jacket, pale toning to the text; the second, jacket rubbed and tanned, and a little chipped head and tail of the spine with a few short edge-splits at the top edge, pale toning to the text, fine foxing to the fore-edge, light damp stain to the fore-egde of the last 30 pages or so, encroaching minimally on the margin, last leaf of the index slightly stuck to the rear pastedown, loss of a few words; both remain very good. First editions, first impressions. Both inscribed to "Derek" by the editor of the first volume, Rupert Pole, Nin's "duplicate husband" (New York Times obituary, 30 July 2006) and literary executor. In Henry and June; "For Derek, Finally the real story. The Missing Anaïs - the Passionate Woman, with love, Rupert, Sept. 1986", with a headed note-sheet sending this copy "Derek, Please write me your reaction when you have time, Thanks, Rupert": A Literate Passion; "For Derek, Finally Anaïs finds her writer/lover and they create a truly Literate Passion, Rupert, Dec. 1987". Pole oversaw the posthumous publication of four unexpurgated volumes of her diaries of which this was the first, chronicling "[Nin's] affairs with an international cast of luminaries, including the novelist Henry Miller; the critic Edmund Wilson; the psychologist Otto Rank, who happened to be her therapist; and the Spanish composer Joaquín Nin, who happened to be her father". For some 30 years Pole represented the western component of Nin's bicoastal bigamy - although technically only married to her from 1955 to 1966 - her husband Hugh Guiler, whom she married in 1923, representing in New York the eastern element. Pole was described by Nin's biographer Deirdre Bair as " sort of a great cipher he was stunningly handsome. Incredibly shy. Not really very bright. And just incredibly self-effacing. She was his star: everything radiated around her, and he loved being in her background". Attractive association copies. Seller Inventory # 125909
