About this Item: Duke University Press, United States, 2012. Paperback. Condition: New. New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Bringing together historically and ethnographically grounded studies of the social and political life of Brazil and Mexico, this collection of essays revitalizes resistance as an area of study. Resistance studies boomed in the 1980s and then was subject to a wave of critique in the 1990s. Covering the colonial period to the present day, the case studies in this collection suggest that, even if much of that critique was justified, resistance remains a useful analytic rubric. The collection has three sections, each of which is preceded by a short introduction. A section focused on religious institutions and movements is bracketed by one featuring historical studies from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries and another gathering more contemporary, ethnographically-based studies. Introducing the collection, the anthropologist John Gledhill traces the debates about resistance studies. In the conclusion, Alan Knight provides a historian s perspective on the broader implications of the contributors findings. Contributors. Helga Baitenmann, Marcus J. M. de Carvalho, Guillermo de la Pena, John Gledhill, Matthew Gutmann, Maria Gabriela Hita, Alan Knight, Ilka Boaventura Leite, Jean Meyer, John Monteiro, Luis Nicolau Pares, Patricia R. Pessar, Patience A. Schell, Robert Slenes, Juan Pedro Viqueira, Margarita Zarate. Seller Inventory # AAJ9780822351870

About this Item: Donhead Publishing Ltd, Dorset, UK, 1998. Hard Cover. Condition: Brand New. First Edition. The period around 1900 was a defining point in the history of architecture and it offers a fascinating insight into the whole development of the modern architectural movement. The intellectual debate was intense with a desire to produce innovative architecture which honoured the past and local traditions whilst using a combination of traditional and new materials. This international collection of papers examines the buildings and architects of this period and presents many fine examples of both domestic and public architecture, reflecting the diversity of ideas and influences of the time. The dialogue between tradition and modernity finds expression in the creative design and craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts Movement and also reveals a desire to experiment with newer materials such as steel and reinforced concrete which then became more widely used after the First World War Contents: An introductory perspective Alan Powers STYLE AND TECHNIQUE Innovation and conservatism: steel and reinforced concrete in British architecture 1860?905 Michael Stratton Precedent versus principle: the search for regional expression in New Zealand domestic architecture, 1890?916 Ian Lochhead The search for order: Scottish architecture 1880?914 Miles Glendinning The Glasgow School of Art: the leading edge of technology George M. About this Item: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. Hardcover. Condition: New. 236 pages. Dimensions: 8.9in. x 6.3in. x 0.9in.Like snapshots of everyday life in the past, the compelling biographies in this book document the making of the Black Atlantic world since the sixteenth century from the point of view of those who were part of it. Centering on the diaspora caused by the forced migration of Africans to Europe and across the Atlantic to the Americas, the chapters explore the slave trade, enslavement, resistance, adaptation, cultural transformations, and the quest for citizenship rights. The variety of experiences, constraints and choices depicted in the book and their changes across time and space defy the idea of a unified black experience. At the same time, it is clear that in the twentieth century, black identity unified people of African descent who, along with other minority groups, struggled against colonialism and racism and presented alternatives to a version of modernity that excluded and alienated them. Drawing on a rich array of little-known documents, the contributors reconstruct the lives and times of some well-known characters along with ordinary people who rarely left written records and would otherwise have remained anonymous and unknown. Contributions by: Aaron P. Althouse, Alan Bloom, Marcus J. M. de Carvalho, Aisnara Perera Daz, Mara de los ngeles Merio Fuentes, Flvio dos Santos Gomes, Hilary Jones, Beatriz G. Mamigonian, Charles Beatty Medina, Richard Price, Sally Price, Cassandra Pybus, Karen Racine, Ty M. Reese, Joo Jos Reis, Lorna Biddle Rinear, Meredith L.
