About this Item: Lame Duck Press (issues 1-2), London, New York, NY, and Lake Toxaway, NC, 1972. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1972-1975. 4to except for issue 5 (8vo). Stab-stapled then (issue 3/4 onwards) wrappers, issue 5 with stapled wrappers. 54pp.-260pp. A complete set of 'Sixpack', uncommon due to the rarity of issue 1. Numbers 3/4 and 7/8 are double issues, the latter being devoted to work by and about Paul Blackburn. The fifth issue is guest edited by Bill Sherman. Born in France and raised in Luxembourg, Joris founded 'Sixpack' soon after moving to London, although his prior years spent in the US no doubt account, at least in part, for the magazine's heavy US influence, as do the transatlantic editorial addresses. Contributors include William S. Burroughs ('Ali's Smile' and 'Story'), Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Olson, Charles Bukowski, Carl Weissner, Carl Solomon, Claude Pelieu, Mary Beach, Alice Notley, Ted Berrigan, John Giorno, Charles Plymell, Bob Cobbing, Felipe Ehrenberg, Allen Fisher, Bill Griffiths, Jeff Nuttall, Bill Butler, Lee Harwood, Anselm Hollo, Eric Mottram, Jennifer Cobbing, Asa Benveniste, John Wieners, Gerard Malanga, Edward Dorn, Bob Kaufman, Dick Miller, Jack Hirschman, Robert Kelly, Fielding Dawson, Armand Schwerner, Gilbert Sorrentino, Jerome Rothenberg, Jackson Mac Low, Carolee Schneemann, David Antin, Theodore Enslin, Bruce McClelland, George Quasha, Richard Grossinger, Lindy Hough, Andrei Codrescu, Joel Oppenheimer, Anne Waldman, Rochelle Owens, George Economou, Clayton Eshleman, Kenneth Irby, Thomas Meyer, Carol Berge, Jonathan Williams, Cid Corman, Chuck Stein, Nathaniel Tarn, Robert Vas Dias, Tom Pickard, Peter Finch, John Maas, Michel Bulteau, Paul Celan, Antonin Artaud, Blackburn, Sherman, Prescott, and Joris. Issue 3/4 lacking the errata slip, which explained that a page of Fisher's contribution and a page of McClelland's had been interchanged. Head edge of issue 2 lightly toned, issue 3/4 very lightly, its wrappers slightly soiled unobtrusively, otherwise light wear only, and Very Good Plus overall. Seller Inventory # 002625

About this Item: St Martins Press, NY, 1998. Hard Cover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Some B/W Photos (illustrator). First Edition. Signed by both authors on title page. An odd twist of publishing fate once again has former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes locked with and overshadowed by the presence of Muhammad Ali; David Remnick's superb biography of the Greatest, King of the World, was published at the same time. The image of his former sparring partner--the beloved, quick, and graceful Ali--haunted Holmes throughout his career, which is too bad, because Holmes was a terrifically skilled fighter who could both box and hit. Like so many boxing stories, Holmes's begins on the wrong side of the tracks; he fights himself out and up from there. Straight-ahead, hard-working, cautious at times, and free of attending glitz, Against All Odds mirrors Holmes's style in the ring and out of it. Its strength is its candor. Holmes never could hide his emotions--or his petulance. His autobiography makes clear his respect for Ali, his hatred of Don King, and the angers that raged around his fight with Gerry Cooney. Indeed, rage is a character in itself. "It was the part of me that always scared me a little because I never completely accepted the fact that I had it in me," Holmes writes. Accept it or not, he rode it to the title, and, no small feat, held that title for seven years. --Jeff Silverman. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 038148

About this Item: Springer. Paperback. Condition: New. 326 pages. Dimensions: 9.2in. x 6.1in. x 0.8in.This volume, like the symposium CSP25 which gave rise to it, commemorates the semi-jubilee of Communicating Sequential Processes. 1 Tony Hoares paper Communicating Sequential Processes is today widely regarded as one of the most inuential papers in computer science. To comm- orate it, an event was organized under the auspices of BCS-FACS (the British Computer Societys Formal Aspects of Computing Science specialist group). CSP25 was one of a series of such events organized to highlight the use of formal methods, emphasize their relevance to modern computing and promote their wider application. BCS-FACS is proud that Tony Hoare presented his original ideas on CSP at one of its rst meetings, in 1978. The two-day event, 78 July 2004, was hosted by London South Bank U- versitys Institute for Computing Research, Faculty of Business, Computing and Information Management. The intention was to celebrate, reect upon and look beyondtherstquarter-centuryofCSPscontributionstocomputerscience. The meeting examined the impact of CSP on many areas stretching from semantics (mathematical models for understanding concurrency and communications) and logic(forreasoningaboutbehavior), throughthedesignofparallelprogramming languages (io, parallelism, synchronization and threads) to applications va- ing from distributed software and parallel computing to information security, Web services and concurrent hardware circuits. It included a panel discussion with panelists Brookes, Hoare, de Roever and Roscoe (chaired by Je Sanders), poster presentations by PhD students and others, featured a re alarm (requ- ing evacuation in the rain!) and concluded with the presentation of a fountain pen to Prof. Sir C. A. R. Hoare. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Seller Inventory # 9783540258131

The magazine had 14 issues and was published from January 1968 to July 1971. From January, 1968, through July, 1971, Ginzburg published Avant Garde. While it could not be termed obscene, it was filled with creative imagery often caustically critical of American society and government, sexual themes, and (for the time) crude language.Avant Garde had a modest circulation but was extremely popular in certain circles, including New York's advertising and editorial art directors. Herbert F. Lubalin (1918-1981), a post-modern design guru, was Ginzburg's collaborator on his four best-known magazines, including Avant Garde, which gave birth to a well-known typeface of the same name. It was originally intended primarily for use in logos: the first version consisted solely of 26 capital letters. It was inspired by Ginzburg and his wife, designed by Lubalin, and realized by Lubalin's assistants and Tom Carnese, one of Lubalin's partners. It is characterized by geometrically perfect round strokes; short, straight lines; and an extremely large number of kerned ligatures. The International Typeface Corporation (ITC) (of which Lubalin was a founder) released a full version in 1970."--wikipedia ; G. Book. Seller Inventory # 006519

About this Item: Oxford University Press, USA. Hardcover. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 288 pages. In 1954, Charles Townes invented the lasers microwave cousin, the maser. The next logical step was to extend the same physical principles to the shorter wavelengths of light, but the idea did not catch fire until October 1957, when Townes asked Gordon Gould about Goulds research on using light to excite thallium atoms. Each took the idea and ran with it. The independent-minded Gould sought the fortune of an independent inventor; the professorial Townes sought the fame of scientific recognition. Townes enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Arthur Schawlow, and got Bell Labs into the race. Gould turned his ideas into a patent application and a million-dollar defense contract. They soon had company. Ali Javan, one of Towness former students, began pulling 90-hour weeks at Bell Labs with colleague Bill Bennett. And far away in California a bright young physicist named Ted Maiman became a very dark horse in the race. While Schawlow proclaimed that ruby could never make a laser, Maiman slowly convinced himself it would. As others struggled with recalcitrant equipment and military secrecy, Maiman built a tiny and elegant device that fit in the palm of his hand. His ruby laser worked the first time he tried it, on May 16, 1960, but afterwards he had to battle for acceptance as the man who made the first laser. Beam is a fascinating tale of a remarkable and powerful invention that has become a symbol of modern technology. This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Hardcover. Seller Inventory # 9780195142105

Dimensions: 10.2in. x 7.1in. x 1.4in.This sweeping new anthology shows how religion has joined with and learned from movements for social justice, peace, and ecological wisdom. Containing voices from a multitude of traditions, national settings, and perspectives. Liberating Faith includes writings by Latin American liberation theologians and radical American religious activists, statements on social justice by the Pope and environmental morality by the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch, religious critiques of collective and interpersonal violence, passionate denunciations of racism and quiet eloquence which demands that we all stand up for morality in dark times. About this Item: J Ross Publishing, United States, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Pulsation in Architecture highlights the role of digital design as the catalyst for a new spatial sensibility related to rhythmic perception. It proposes a novel critical reception of computational architecture based on the ability of digital design to move beyond mere instrumentality, and to engage with core aspects of the discipline: the generative engine of digital architecture reinvigorates a discourse of part-to-whole relationships through the lens of rhythmic affect. There is a paradigm shift in spatial perception due to the intense use of computational techniques and the capacity to morph massive amounts of data in spatial patterns; rhythm plays a pivotal role in the articulation of the topology of buildings, generating the atmospheric character that induces moods and throbbing sensations in space. Pulsation introduces the fundamental animate capacity of living form and reshapes our perception of architectural space across the multiple scales of a project, from digital inception to fabrication. An emerging thread of rhythmic sensibility loosely binds a survey of contemporary design practices, including contributions by Peter Eisenman, Jeff Kipnis, Greg Lynn, UNStudio, Preston Scott Cohen, Reiser + Umemoto, Asymptote, Ali Rahim, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Ruy Klein, Gage / Clemenceau, NOX, Evan Douglis Studio, kokkugia, and MONAD Studio.
