About this Item: Random House USA Inc, India, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. In her first work of fiction in more than a decade, award-winning novelist Hilma Wolitzer brilliantly renders the intimate details of ordinary life and exposes a host of hidden truths. The Doctor s Daughter is a haunting portrait of a woman coming to terms with her family history and the fallibility of memory. One morning, Alice Brill awakes with a sudden awareness that something is wrong. There s a hollowness in her chest, and a sensation of dread that she can t identify or shake. Was it something she s done, or forgotten to do? As she scours her mind for the source of her unease, she confronts an array of disturbing possibilities. First, there is her marriage, a once vibrant relationship that now languishes stasis. Then there s her idle, misdirected younger son, who always needs bailing out of some difficulty. Or perhaps Alice s trepidation is caused by the loss of her career as an editor at a large publishing house, and the new path she s paved for herself as a freelance book doctor. Or it might be the real doctor in her life: her father. Formerly one of New York s top surgeons, he now rests in a nursing home, his mind gripped by dementia. And the Eden that was Alice s childhood-the material benefits and reflected glory of being a successful doctor s daughter, the romance of her parents famously perfect marriage-makes her own domestic life seem fatally flawed. While struggling to find the root of her restlessness, Alice is buoyed by her discovery of a talented new writer, a man who works by day as a machinist in Michigan. Soon their interactions and feelings intensify, and Alice realizes that the mystery she s been trying to solve lies not in the present, as she had assumed, but in the past-and in the secrets of a marriage that was never as perfect as it appeared. Like the best works of Anne Tyler, Sue Miller, and Gail Godwin, The Doctor s Daughter is private yet universal, luminous and revelatory-and marks the reemergence of a singular talent in American writing. About this Item: Büchergilde Gutenberg, Frankfurt am Main, Wien und Zürich, 2002. Leinen. Condition: gut. Erste Aufl.. (Wikipedia) In deutscher Sprache. 350 pages. 8° (140 x 220mm). Seller Inventory # BN19638

About this Item: Wayne State University Press. Paperback. Condition: New. 264 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 0.7in.Odyssey of Exile paints a sensitive a compelling portrait of German-Jewish women who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Arriving in South America, they faced haunting memories of the terror they had escaped and the challenge of adjusting to Brazils patriarchal culture, unstable economy, and tropical climate. Nine educated women from the German middle class are the focus of this volume. Katherine Morris places their memoirs in historical context, offering rare glimpses into personal histories. While the narratives differ in tone, subject, and approach, they share common themes: how Jewish women reacted to Nazi persecution, the pragmatic way they adapted to a new life in Brazil, and their desire to record their stories to keep the history of their families alive. About this Item: Brill - Sense, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Skepticism toward disciplinarity, William F. Pinar points out, is etched deeply in the U. S. field, drawn by progressive education s efforts to reconfigure the school curriculum as child-centered and/or as focused on social reconstruction. Skepticism toward disciplinarity had also been affirmed by Bobbitt and Charters positioning of adult activity as the organizer of the school curriculum. Add to these historical dispositions the contemporary legitimation crisis of the academic disciplines and the rage for interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary, post-disciplinary--anything but disciplinary--research and curriculum becomes intelligible. The intellectual labor of understanding constitutes the discipline of disciplinarity. Through the discipline of disciplinarity one contributes to the field s intellectual advancement and to one s own. Appreciating the centrality of disciplinarity to intellectual advancement requires us, Pinar argues, to replace Schwab s syntactical and substantive structures of the disciplines. Focused on methodology and the concepts research methodology generates, Schwab s schema was more appropriate to the natural and social-behavioral sciences than it is to the humanities and the arts. Pinar replaces these with two structures more appropriate to a discipline associated with the humanities and the arts and focused on the education of the public: horizontality and verticality. Explicating Spivak s notion of planetarity to specify the structures of subjectivity these structures of disciplinarity invite, Pinar illustrates these concepts through introductions to the scholarship of Ted Aoki, Tom Barone, Mary Aswell Doll, Maxine Greene, James Henderson, Dwayne Huebner, Rita Irwin, David Jardine, Kathleen Kesson, James B. Macdonald, Janet Miller, Marla Morris, Alice Pitt, William Reynolds, John Weaver, among others. Of significance to all specializations in the broad and fragmented academic field of education, Intellectual Advancement through Disciplinarity provides the intellectual tools by means of which education scholars worldwide can participate in the complicated conversation that is internationalization in order to contribute to the intellectual sophistication of their nationally distinctive fields. About this Item: Brill, Netherlands, 2000. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. In this compact but highly concentrated study, the author unites clinical and literary critical skills in an attempt to go beyond familiar psychological commentary on Henry James and conduct a detailed and rigorous psychoanalytic investigation into recurring and psychologically significant patterns in his major and minor fiction. Drawing freely on material from notebooks, letters, and other biographical sources, the volume centres on James s unconscious fantasies concerning the human body, mostly the damaged or incomplete human body. These core fantasies are firmly placed at the root of James s creativeness. While one of these fantasies of physical mutilation finds expression in the famous obscure hurt of James s late teens, the author develops a hypothesis concerning their much earlier history and their place in the larger psychological constellation of the James family. Accordingly, Henry James Senior, his wife Mary, together with William and Alice James, all figure largely in the intricate and perilous family context of Henry s creative activity. This book also includes original factual research, casting sidelights on matters such as the relation between James s early work and that of Dr Silas Weir Mitchell, and on the early history of psychoanalysis in the United States, including William James s meeting with Freud and his view of early psychoanalytic thinking, and Henry s contact as a patient with early psychoanalytic practitioners at the beginning of the twentieth century. About this Item: Brill, Netherlands, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. New.. Language: English . Brand New Book. Over the period 1999-2005, choreographer and dancer Tess de Quincey and a team of international artists conducted a series of art-laboratories and performances in and around the Central Desert town of Alice Springs. These art-labs culminated in the 2005 performance of Dictionary of Atmospheres, staged during the Alice Desert Festival. Drawing upon practice-based research conducted while interning with de Quincey during the development and staging of Dictionary of Atmospheres, Anderson contemplates the way in which moments from the production illustrate the artist s approach to and articulation of place. Meeting Places offers meditation on the nature of experience as it manifests in serial site-specific art encounters in desert locations. Seller Inventory # AAS9789042038493

About this Item: Brill, Netherlands, 1996. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. This volume brings together essays which suggest that the relationship between Canada and Europe is a two-way process, as historically the traffic between them has been: either may have something to offer the other. Europe too acknowledges situations today in which difference and community are hard terms to reconcile. Difference refers to gender, sexuality, race, nationality, or language. Community is the collective understanding which must continually be renegotiated and reconstructed among these factors. The Canadian-European connection is one in which it seems especially appropriate to explore such circumstances. The topics covered include pioneer women s writing, transcultural women s fiction, canonical taxonomy of the contemporary novel, the city poem in Confederate Canada, poetry of the Great War, various ethno-cultural perspectives (Jewish, South Asian, Italian; Native reappropriations; Quebec cinema), literature and the media, and small-press publishing. Some of the authors treated: Sandra Birdsell, Nicole Brossard, Jack Hodgins, Henry Kreisel, Robert Kroetsch, Janice Kulyk Keefer, Archibald Lampman, Malcolm Lowry, Lesley Lum, Daphne Marlatt, Susanna Moodie, Bharati Mukherjee, Alice Munro, Frank Paci, and Susan Swan. The book challenges the opinion expressed in the Columbia History of the American Novel (1991) and propagated by many influential scholars that the mainstream of postmodernist fiction is represented by the disjunctive and nihilistic work of such writers as Kathy Acker, Donald Barthelme, and Robert Coover. Professor Alsen disagrees. He contends that this kind of fiction is not read and taught much outside an isolated but powerful circle in the academic community. It is the two-part thesis of Professor Alsen s book that the mainstream of postmodernist fiction consists of the widely read work of the Nobel Prize laureates Saul Bellow and Toni Morrison and other similar writers and that this mainstream fiction is essentially romantic. To support his argument, Professor Alsen analyzes representative novels by Saul Bellow, J.D. Salinger, Norman Mailer, Flannery O Connor, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip Roth, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, the later John Barth, Alice Walker, William Kennedy, and Paul Auster. Professor Alsen demonstrates that the traits which distinguish the fiction of the romantic postmodernists from the fiction of their disunctive and nihilist colleagues include a vision of life that is a form of philosophical idealism, an organic view of art, modes of storytelling that are reminiscent of the nineteenth-century romance, and such themes as the nature of sin or evil, the negative effects of technology on the soul, and the quest for transcendence. About this Item: Brill - Sense, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Skepticism toward disciplinarity, William F.

About this Item: Brill - Sense, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This book combines history, sociology, psychology and educational policy in research on a 40-year, crucial phase of development of ethnic identity, ethnic relations and educational and social policies for children in England, from pre-school to secondary school. The authors show how nursery children of different ethnicities interact in beginning their identity journeys in a culture of both inequality, and evolving ethnic relationships and patterns of harmony, in Britain s developing multicultural society. In looking at self-concept development in secondary school children through the lens of various kinds of child maltreatment, Alice Sawyerr and Christopher Bagley argue that ethnic minority children are psychological survivors, and African-Caribbean girls especially are making strong identity steps--it is the poor whites who will make up the precariat, the reserve army of labour, who are left behind in structures of inequality.
