About this Item: Silver Spring Press (c.1978), Silver Spring MD, 1978. Softcover. Condition: Good+. 1st Edition (limited/numbered). [moderate external soiling and shelfwear, covers a bit scuffed]. (cartoons, B&W photographs) INSCRIBED to a relative and SIGNED by the author, opposite the dedication page; also laid in is a postcard from the author to the inscribee (the postcard is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln). A fascinating collection of Civil War-era editorial cartoons, primarily depicting Abraham Lincoln -- not an actual reproduction of his son Tad's scrapbook ("We do not have that precious bit of Lincolniana"), but rather a creative re-imagining of what it might have been like, based on historical accounts of Tad's interest in caricatures of his father. The author's commentary accompanies the cartoons, which are all meticulously sourced and presented in chronological order. The last section of the book is a rather severely abridged version of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' with reproductions of some of the original John Tenniel illustrations. The photo on the cover, by the way, is of the author's own son. [The title page states this to be copy #273 of an edition of 2,000.] Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 15620

About this Item: U.Q.P., 2013. Hardcover. Condition: New. Thirty years ago, artist Rod Moss made his home in the stark beauty of Australia's Centre. Since then, his place in Alice Springs and the traditional lands of the Arrernte has deepened, as has his enduring intimacy with the families of Whitegate camp on the town's eastern fringe. In this frank and powerful illustrated memoir, Moss gently uncovers the places where his own family and art intersect with the lives of those in the Whitegate mob. The closely connected Hayes, Johnson, Ryder and Neil families consider Moss one of their own and, through them, Moss shows us the majesty of the land, the necessity of story, the intensity of kin, the madness of violence, the tenderness of friendship, and the rhythm of grief. One Thousand Cuts continues where Moss's highly acclaimed first book, The Hard Light of Day,  left off ? this time in pictures as much as words. Through Moss's moving stories and his stunning paintings and photographs, we share in and celebrate his everyday life with the Whitegate mob, including their continuing fight for a standard of living that is basic to most Australians. 'This is an unflinchingly honest portrait of violence and loyalty, of feuds and vigorous endurance.  It is also a record of one of the dearest roles of friendship: to offer dignity by being a dedicated witness.'  Jay Griffiths, Author of Wild and Kith: The Riddle of the Childscape. About this Item: TASCHEN, 2016. Paperback. Condition: NEUF. "Can two artists build their lives and careers together while maintaining separate artistic visions? Newton and Springs (born June Browne and later known as June Brunelle) here give us a resounding affirmative. Their singular monograph is a visual testament to the longevity of their partnership and the constancy of their individual artistic visions. Newton, internationally known for his idiosyncratic fashion and portrait photography, and Springs, an actress, painter, and late-blooming photographer, were married in 1947. The book contains their self-portraits, portraits of each other, and radically distinct portraits of celebrity figures. Of the approximately 180 photographs collected here, most are in black and white, and some contain frank nudity. Taken together, they comprise an intimate and highly personal chronology of an intimate partnership. A valuable addition to photography sections in large public and academic libraries." --Library journal. 199 pp. Seller Inventory # 220686

About this Item: Paris Audiovisuel, 1989. Condition: Sehr gut. 77 S. mit vielen Abb. UImschl. etwas berieben. - Patrick Roegiers. Cavendish would retain the seat until his death in 1880. It was later commanded by his son, James Charles Cavendish This article has been adapted from an original article written by BH Holland in 1912. Hartington Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquis of Hartington and eighth Duke of Devonshire, was born on 23 July 1833 at Holker Hall, Lancashire. He was the eldest of three sons of William Cavendish, second earl of Burlington, and later seventh duke of Devonshire and his wife, Lady Blanche Georgiana, daughter of George Howard, sixth earl of Carlisle. She died on 27 April 1840, leaving four children, three sons and a daughter. The second son was Lord Frederick Cavendish and the third son was Edward (1838-1891). The daughter, Louisa Caroline, married Admiral Francis Egerton (1824-1895), and died 21 September 1907. The sons were educated at home, mainly by their father, whose attainments in both mathematics and classics were high. Hartington was sent to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1851 when he was eighteen. He gained a second class in the mathematical tripos of 1854, graduating with an M.A. in the same year. During the following three years he led the life of a young man of high social position, hunted a good deal, and was an officer first in the Lancashire Yeomanry, and then in the Derbyshire militia. In 1856 he went to Russia attached to the staff of his cousin, Granville George Leveson-Gower, second Earl Granville, who had been sent as a special ambassador to represent Queen Victoria at the coronation of the Tsar Alexander II. In the spring of 1857, at the age of twenty-four, Cavendish became MP for North Lancashire as a Liberal and a supporter of Lord Palmerston. In January 1858 his cousin, the sixth duke of Devonshire, died. Cavendish's father succeeded to the dukedom and estates, and he himself became Marquis of Hartington. In June 1859, after a general election, Lord Palmerston, who had been forced to resign in 1858, was prepared to replace Lord Derby's government, and to resume power. He commissioned Lord Hartington to move a motion of no confidence intended to effect this object. The speech, made on 7 June, was very successful and the motion was carried on 10 June by 323 to 310. The resignation of the Derby government followed. In August 1862 Lord Hartington toured the United States of America, where the civil war was now at its height. He visited the headquarters of both the northern and southern armies, and had an interview both with Abraham Lincoln and with Jefferson Davis. Hartington's sympathie. Seller Inventory # PD8568

About this Item: Taschen, 2010. Large Hardcover. Condition: Collectible; Like New. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. [144 pp.] A pseudonymous collection of photography by Helmut Newton's wife. Starting in 1970, June Newton created her own photographic works under the pseudonym Alice Springs. These have been exhibited regularly at the Helmut Newton Foundation since 2005, namely in "June's Room." The current retrospective in Berlin provides for the first time a comprehensive look at the four decades that span her work, presenting photographs from advertising and fashion as well as nudes and portraits. Her own photographic oeuvre began with a bout of influenza suffered by Helmut Newton in Paris, 1970. June Newton had her husband show her how to handle the camera and light meter and in his place photographed an advertisement for the French cigarette brand Gitanes. The portrait of the smoking model would be the jump-start of a new career. In the early 1970s, Alice Springs shot several campaigns for the French hair stylist Jean Louis David; the photographs appeared under her byline as a full-page ads in renowned fashion magazines. 1974 later saw the first Alice Springs cover image adorning French Elle. By this time she had also received innumerable commissions for portraits, some of which have become iconic. The roster of artists, actors and musicians depicted by Alice Springs over the last 40 years reads like a "who's who" of the international cultural scene on both sides of the Atlantic. Many portraits were magazine assignments from Paris to Los Angeles; others resulted from private initiative. Alice Springs does more than document the appearance of celebrities and anonymous contemporaries; she captures their charisma, their aura. It might be that her deep knowledge of acting helps, how to simultaneously look at and beyond the human facade. This is particularly evident in her double portraits, in which the protagonists' interaction is perfectly staged. There is a certain sense of familiarity in her images; actually they oscillate between distance and intimacy. In her subtle portraits we encounter the haughty stance alongside natural self-confidence as well as the shy glance. KEYWORDS: ART PHOTOGRAPHY PHOTOGRAPHER MODERN. Seller Inventory # 2204956
