Chromolithographic album illustrating and identifying contemporary and historic United States warships. 14 pp. Front cover chipped and detached at string binding, otherwise excellent condition. A fine example of the long line of Allen & Ginter albums, this one, however, utilizes large illustrations, not simply reproductions of smaller rectangular cigarette cards. Some ships, such as the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) are the only ship illustrated on a page. Other pages have multiple vessels. The versos contain descriptions and critical data about each ship, including date and place laid down, displacement, number of guns, etc. This was a particluarly interesting time to show the ships of the United States Navy, as naval technology was in the process of transitioning from sailing ships to steam-powered vessels. Many of the ships shown have both full masts with sails along with stacks for engine exhaust. Color lithography by Schumacher & Ettlinger of New York.
