About this Item: Officina di Studi Medievali, Palermo, 2018. Condition: NEW. Palermo: Officina di Studi Medievali, 2018 9788864851068 Osmlab. Laboratorio di idee 2 1409 xviii, 441 p. : ill. col. b/n, indice ; 24 cm. Notions of movement and mobility are central to understanding many aspects of medieval society. Essentially, movement involves connections across time, objects, people, and space. The essays in this volume investigate how the circulation, motion, and mobility of people, patterns, and ideas influenced artistic creation between the 6th and 15th centuries – from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast. Scholarship in the volume manifests the international scope of current research on artistic and cultural circulation and mobility in the European Middle Ages. In it, readers are presented with a detailed image illustrating the effects of social and cultural exchange and mobility on artistic creation. As a whole, the collection aims at developing critical and constructive interdisciplinary revision of these matters. New and exciting questions are also raised for future discussion. Works from scholars specializing in history, history of art, palaeography, codicology, literature, and the history of ideas are bound in a single volume. The book brings together twenty-five contributions from: L. U. Afonso, X. Barral i Altet, C. Barreira, M. A. Bilotta, G. Boto Varela, E. Condello, L. Correia de Sousa, M. Cursi, G. Donati, J. About this Item: Lisbon, na Impressão Regia, 1832., 1832. 8°, original pink printed wrappers (spine chipped, front wrapper detached, stain from cellophane tape across spine). Small wood-engraved royal arms of Portugal on title page. Internally fine, overall very good. xv, 144 pp. Lacking a frontispiece portrait of the author. *** FIRST EDITION. The lengthiest piece is a poem in six cantos on Isabel of Aragon (1271-1336), Queen of Portugal, wife of King Dinis. There is also a romance, an ode and a sonnet "Ao muito habil artista portuguez Mauricio José Sendim" (pp. 139-142), and 2 more sonnets. The prologue to Isabel mentions Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Almeida Garrett's Adosinda (published in 1828), and discusses what subjects are appropriate for romantic poetry. The "Advertencia" to the poem entitled "A Visom, Poemeto" (pp. 115-138) promises that the poem is itself a discourse on the nature of romantic poetry: "No mesmo Poemeto procurei difinir o caracter de hum Poeta Romantico, e o que faz o distinctivo desta espece de Poesia." According to the Dicionário de literatura, Costa e Silva was an early adherent of Romanticism in Portugal - rather surprising given that he was in his 40s when Romanticism began to flourish in the 1830s.Missing from this copy of Isabel is a lithograph portrait of the author drawn by Mauricio José Sendim, to whom two of the poems in this volume are dedicated. The rear wrapper promises a list of subscribers with the next printing of the book, "o que breve se espera, pela grande concurrencia, que tem havido á mesma assignatura."Innocêncio notes that in this work, Costa e Silva decided, "talvez caprichosamente," to employ orthographical innovations, for example using the sixteenth-century form "visom" rather than "visão." He was widely criticized for this and desisted in future publications.José Maria da Costa e Silva (Lisbon, 1788-Lisbon, 1854) was 17 when he wrote his first poem, Passeio, published in 1816. (Almeida Garrett felt he had to express the "admiração e o indisivel prazer, que me deu o poema do Passeio.") Costa e Silva wrote more than 200 pieces for the theater and was editor and a contributor to the Crónica Constitucional de Lisboa, and a contributor to Ramalhete and Revista Universal Lisbonense.*** Innocêncio V, 27; on the author, see V, 25-29, VII, 122 (on the Sendim portrait), XIII, 90-91. See also the unsigned entry in Biblos V, 42. J.P.C., "Romantismo," Dicionário de literatura (1994), III, 963. Porbase locates four copies, all at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Copac repeats British Library only. Seller Inventory # 25418

About this Item: Oxford, England : Archaeopress, Publishers of British Archaeological Reports, 2014. Soft cover. Condition: New. viii, 96 pages : illustrations (black and white), maps (black and white) ; 30 cm. Text in English with one paper in French and summaries in English and French. Experimental Archaeology as an hypothesis contrast method, focusing on technological studies, is not new in archaeological research procedures. Since the early 1970s, as a consequence of the application of châine-operatoire/reduction sequence concepts within the framework of Palaeoethnological investigation, or within the actualistics studies highly developed in the framework of Processual Archaeology, the experimentation and utilization of artefact replicas have been used in the search for answers regarding technological procedures and their functional aspects. However, since the 1990s the research interface between technology and experimentation, worldwide, has increased, resulting in a renewal of procedures and interest in the incorporation of such studies particularly in the field of techno-functional analysis of prehistoric artefacts. Nevertheless the criticisms on experimental procedures are abundant, questioning its theoretical fundamentals and explanation validity. These remarks result both from the morphotypological approaches to artefact assemblages, but also from a lack of understanding on the range and goals of such studies. Stefano Grimaldi discusses the epistemological implications of experimental approaches. Experimentation on lithics are discussed in the papers of S. Cura, P. Cura, S. Grimaldi and E. Cristiani; G. N. de Souza and Â. P. Lima; B. de S. Barreto and M. P. Cabral; M. J. Rodet, A. Prous, J. Machado and L. F. Bass; G. N. Poplevko). Other papers discuss experimentation in the production of beads (M. Gurova, C. Bonsall, B. Bradley, E. Anastassova and P. Cura), new protocols on ceramics experimentation (J. F. Cerezer), ethnographic ceramic technology (R. T. Bortolin and V. Fróis), bone industry (B. Santander; C. Costa, N. Almeida, H. Gomes, S. Cura and P. Cura) and rock art engravings (N. S. da Rosa, S. Cura, S. Garcês and P. Cura). Seller Inventory # BAR2657

About this Item: Royal Society of Chemistry. Hardcover. Condition: New. 644 pages. Dimensions: 9.1in. x 6.1in. x 1.6in.This book provides a critical overview of the advances being made towards overcoming biological barriers through the contribution of nanosciences and nanotechnologies. Overcoming these barriers is of primary importance for solving the problems of many current drugs and vaccines and it is also especially relevant for the commercial exploitation of new therapeutic strategies i. e. gene and cellular therapies. Despite important information that has been covered in recently published books related to nanomedicine (mainly oriented to technologies and applications), there is still an important gap related to the relationship between the chemical properties of nanobiomaterials and their interaction with the biological environment. Thus, this comprehensive new book that is presented with a clear and organised structure dedicated to the different biological barriers relevant for drug delivery applications will focus on (i) mechanistic issues related to the interaction between drug delivery systems and biological barriers and (ii) the analysis of the critical factors determining the efficacy of nanobiomaterials for specific applications. Moreover, this field has become highly multidisciplinary over the last decade, leading to the development of new products, as well as to significant advances from the regulatory point of view. Moreover, this book will also provide an up-to-date view on the clinical relevance of nanomedicine and on its possible impact on global health. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Hardcover. Seller Inventory # 9781849733632

Tomas Medeiros. The cover design is by Rui Mendo e Costa Andrade. The poems are by Agostinho Neto, Aires Almeida Santos, Alda Lara, Alexandre Dáskalos, Amilcar Barca, Antero Abreu, António Cardoso, António Jacinto, António Neto, Arnaldo Santos, Cochat Osório, Ermelinda Xavier, Ernesto Lara, Fernando Costa Andrade, Geraldo Bessa Victor, Humberto da Silva, João Abel, José Graça, Leston Martins, Lília da Fonseca, Manuel Lima, Mário António, Maurício Almeida Gomes, Tomás Jorge, and Viriato Cruz. Pages 57-61 contain "Notas Biográficas" for the authors, which range from two to twelve lines. The Poetas angolanos listed in Moser and Ferreira (New Bibliography nº 1549), published in Lisbon by the Casa dos Estudantes do Império, 1962, is substantially enlarged, with 137 pages. It includes sixteen folk poems in several African languages as well as works by H. Lopes Guerra, Lunandino Vieira, and T. Vieira da Cruz. However, it does not include the works in the present volume by eight authors: Amilcar Barca, Antero Abreu, António Neto, Ermelinda Xavier, Humberto da Silva, José Graça, Leston Martins, and Lília da Fonseca. The Casa dos Estudantes do Império (C.E.I.) played an important role "na formação de uma consciência e de uma literatura nacionais" (Biblos). Created under the Salazar regime in an attempt to support and control foreign students, the C.E.I. became a hotbed of writers who argued and fought for the independence of Portuguese colonies in Africa. It was established in 1944 from the merger of separate homes for students from Angola, Moçambique, and Cabo Verde. From 1948 to 1964 the C.E.I. issued the monthly magazine Mensagem, in whose pages many writers first appeared who later became important figures in their respective national literatures. The Colecção de Autores Ultramarinos, launched in 1958, published many works by young Africans. Among the most prominent members of the C.E.I. were Amílcar Cabral (Guiné-Bissau and Cabo Verde), Lúcio Lara and Agostinho Neto (Angola), and Marcelino dos Santos (Moçambique).*** Not in Moser and Ferreira, New Bibliography of the Lusophone Literatures of Africa, which lists as nº 1549 Poetas angolanos, Pref. Departamento Cultural, Alfredo Margarido, published by the Casa dos Estudantes do Império in 1962, with 137 pp. On the C.E.I., see Maria Aparecida Ribeiro in Biblos I, 1029-30.
