About this Item: Coimbra, Na Imprensa da Universidade, 1801., 1801. 16°, contemporary tree sheep (scraping to covers; wear to head and foot of spine, corners; recased with recent endleaves), flat spine with gilt fillets and crimson leather lettering piece, gilt short-title. In good condition. 258 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST EDITION, with page 6 in its corrected state. Among the subjects of the odes are Vasco da Gama, André Furtado de Mendonça, João Fernandes Vieira, Dom João de Castro, Antonio Moniz Barreto, Duarte Pacheco Pereira, the Count Schaumbourg Lippe, and the Marquês de Pombal (to whom there are no less than four poems, including one on the reforms to Coimbra University). A second edition was published in London, 1820. The Odes also were published as volumes V and VI of the author's Poesias (Lisbon, 1807-17). Cruz e Silva developed a formidable reputation as a lyric poet and satirist. His O Hyssope was a source of inspiration for Francisco de Mello Franco's famous burlesque poem Reino da estupidez. Cruz e Silva based his poem on the quarrel between the bishop of Elvas, D. Lourenço de Lancastre, and the dean, D. José Carlos de Lara, which he witnessed first-hand while resident in Elvas from 1764 to 1774. As Bell recounts the tale, Cruz e Silva "was summoned to read his satire to the all-powerful [Marquês de] Pombal in the presence of the infuriated bishop . the poem proved too much for the gravity of the minister, who appointed him a judge in Rio de Janeiro (1776)" (Portuguese Literature pp. 273-4). Martins de Carvalho notes (p. 7) that many contemporaries considered O Hyssope "muito superior" to Pope's Rape of the Lock.Of humble origins (his father was a carpenter who abandoned the family to emigrate to Brazil, while his mother supported them working as a seamstress), Cruz e Silva (Lisbon 1731-Rio de Janeiro 1799) studied law at Coimbra. He co-founded the Arcadia Ulyssiponense in 1756 and, while serving as a military judge, developed a formidable reputation as a lyric poet and satirist. Most of Cruz e Silva's poems remained unpublished until after his death. In July 1790 Cruz e Silva was sent again to Brazil to assist in trying the leaders of the Republican conspiracy in Minas, in which Tomás António Gonzaga, Claudio Manuel da Costa, Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga and other men of letters were involved, and in December 1792 he became chancellor of the Relação in Rio. Six years later he was named councillor of the Conselho Ultramarino, but did not live to return home.*** Innocêncio I, 124 (without mention of the final leaf). Pinto de Matos (1970) p. 235. Porbase locates four copies: Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, Biblioteca João Paulo II-Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, and Universidade do Minho, without differentiating between the states of p. 6. Copac repeats the British Library and Cambridge University only. Seller Inventory # 40159

About this Item: Lisbon, Composto e impresso nas oficinas gráficas da Emprêsa do Anuário Comercial, 1932., 1932. 8°, original printed wrappers (minor wear and soiling). Plate with portrait of the author. In good to very good condition. Author's signed and dated six-line presentation inscription on half title: "Ao prezado // amigo e Senhor // Batalha Reis // com Simpatia // 9-2-19140 [sic] // Lisboa Eliezer Kamenezky". The preface (pp. 5-21) is by Fernando Pessoa. Sousa points out that here, as often elsewhere, Pessoa speaks more about his own ideas and obsessions than about those in the work he is supposed to introduce. He was the closest companion to Antero de Quental during the period 1868-1871. About this Item: Lisbon, Escriptorio da Bibliotheca Portugueza, 1853., 1853. 18° (13.8 x 9 cm.), original printed wrappers (spine slightly faded, with short tear at head). Very slight spotting to a few leaves. Uncut and unopened. In fine condition. xxxvi [counting front wrapper as pp. i-ii], 196 pp., (1 blank l.). *** Second edition of this epic poem in oitava rima on the theme of Paradise lost and regained. The four cantos treat death, judgment, Hell, and Paradise. Bell praises it for its readability and intense and vigorous style. Its composition can be dated not later than 1616, the date of the "Aprovaçam" of the first edition (Lisbon, 1623), which is extremely rare. Os novissimos was reintroduced to nineteenth-century audiences through publication of this second edition, which reprints not only the text but all preliminary matter from the first edition. Added to this edition is a biographical and critical essay reprinted from José Maria da Costa e Silva, Ensaio biographico-critico sobre os melhores poetas portuguezes (published earlier the same year in Lisbon). The second edition forms part of the 15-volume Bibliotheca Portugueza, ou Reproducção dos Livros Classicos Portuguezes, which also included the works of Bernardim Ribeiro, Gil Vicente, Luis Camões, Francisco de Moraes, Francisco de Andrade, and the Cavalleiro de Oliveira.Dom Francisco Childe Rolim de Moura (1572-1640), fourteenth Senhor of the towns of Azambuja and Montargil, was in all probability born in Lisbon. He was the son of Dom Felipe de Moura (according to Borba de Moraes) or Dom António Rolim de Moura (according to Ana Hatherly) and Dona Genebra Cavalcanti of Pernambuco (according to Borba) or Dona Guiomar da Silveira (according to Hatherly). It is believed by some that he was born in Olinda. Although esteemed by his contemporaries, few of his poems were published or are still extant.*** Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 600: "not easy to find." Innocêncio III, 49: calling for xxxvi, 196 pp.; on the Bibliotheca Portugueza, see I, 387. Blake III, 109: calling for xxxviii, 196 pp., and citing evidence - disputed by many authorities - that Rolim de Moura was born in Brazil and served as an officer there. Pinto de Mattos (1970) p. 548. Welsh 2297. On the first edition, see Barbosa Machado II, 244-5; Forjaz de Sampaio, História da literatura portuguesa ilustrada III, 127, 150: reproducing the title page; Bell, Portuguese Literature p. 257; Palha 838. Porbase locates five copies: two each at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal and Biblioteca João Paulo II-Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and one at the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra. Not located in Copac. NUC: PSt, MiU, CU, NIC, NN, ICN; locating the Lisbon, 1623 edition at MH only. Seller Inventory # 23541
