About this Item: Black Classic Press, United States, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Blacks in Hispanic Literature is a collection of fourteen essays by scholars and creative writers from Africa and the Americas. Called one of two significant critical works on Afro-Hispanic literature to appear in the late 1970s, it includes the pioneering studies of Carter G. Woodson and Valaurez B. Spratlin, published in the 1930s, as well as the essays of scholars whose interpretations were shaped by the Black aesthetic. The early essays, primarily of the Black-as-subject in Spanish medieval and Golden Age literature, provide an historical context for understanding 20th-century creative works by African-descended, Hispanophone writers, such as Cuban Nicolas Guillen and Ecuadorean poet, novelist, and scholar Adalberto Ortiz, whose essay analyzes the significance of Negritude in Latin America. This collaborative text set the tone for later conferences in which writers and scholars worked together to promote, disseminate, and critique the literature of Spanish-speaking people of African descent. For example, Antonio Olliz Boyd s examination of Blackness in Latin American literature is an unwitting call-and-response to Ortiz s analysis of negritud. Similarly, Martha Cobb and Sylvia Wynter examine concepts of race and representation in Spanish peninsular literature from the Moorish conquest through the Siglo de Oro. John F. Matheus describes the portrayal of Blacks in early Latin American literature, while Lemuel Johnson and Constance Sparrow de Garcia Barrio focus their analyses on Cuban and Puerto Rican poetry. This edition of BHL includes a new introduction, which traces the development of Afro-Hispanic creative writing and literary criticism in the past thirty years. The field has been enriched by the publication of three important journals, organization of seminars and conferences, and application of new critical methodologies. This edition also includes a bibliographic essay that describes the creative production of Afro-Hispanic writers, particularly women, Latinos, and Ecuatoguineans who have emerged in the last three decades. The updated bibliography describes the publications of scholars, such as Richard L. Jackson and Marvin A. Lewis, who have broadened the field to include analyses of genres, themes, countries, and individual authors. This collection introduced many academics to a new discipline, defined and shaped the contours of that discipline, and provided an aesthetic that led to the development of other theories. Cited by a literary critic in 2004 as the seminal study in the field of Afro-Hispanic Literature . . . on which most scholars in the field cut their teeth, Blacks in Hispanic Literature, thus, helped to lay the groundwork for the evolution of Afro-Hispanic Studies. About this Item: Soberscove Press, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Literary Nonfiction. Art. Poetry. Exhibition curated by Daniel Tucker. ORGANIZE YOUR OWN: THE POLITICS AND POETICS OF SELF–DETERMINATION MOVEMENTS features new work by contemporary artists, poets, and writers that relates to the Black Power movement s mandate to organize your own community against racism. Exploring the question of what your own might mean, this book connects some of the concerns dealt with in the 1960s and 70s to the conversations and social movements around racial justice happening today. Far from an historical account, ORGANIZE YOUR OWN documents and expands upon an exhibition and event series of the same name that took place in Chicago and Philadelphia in early 2016. In addition to exhibition documentation and a series of commissioned texts, this book also includes transcripts from five panel discussions that were organized as part of the exhibition. Two of these discussions focus on the original Rainbow Coalition, a unique example of race and class negotiation in which organizations such as the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords, and the Young Patriots Organization joined forces. Other discussions and contributions explore poetry, performance, and socially engaged art—which, broadly speaking, finds its foundation in the histories and language of community organizing. What is the role of politics and poetics in complicating and clarifying these ongoing conversations—the ones that happen when people come together? With contributions by: Amber Art Design, Rashayla Marie Brown, Emily Chow Bluck, Billy Che Brooks, Salem Collo-Julin, Irina Contreras, Brad Duncan, Bettina Escauriza, Eric J. Garcia, Maria Gaspar, Thomas Graves, Robby Herbst, Jen Hofer, Alethea Hyun–Jin Shin, Mike James, Marissa Johnson- Valenzuela, Jennifer Kidwell, Antonio Lopez, Nicole Marroquin, Fred Moten, Matt Neff, Mark Nowak, Edward Onaci, Dave Pabellon, Mary Patten, Rasheedah Phillips, Anthony Romero, Frank Sherlock, Amy Sonnie, Hy Thurman, Thread Makes Blanket, James Tracy, Daniel Tuker, the University of Louisville s Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, Dan S. Two decades ago the recombinant DNA technology or genetic engineering ushered in a new era in the study of plant viruses. The major breakthrough came in the eighties primarily due to the development of new methods for RNA reverse transcription and cDNA cloning along with restriction enzyme mapping and rapid nucleotide sequencing. An information explosion in various molecular aspects of plant viruses was caused by these studies. Current research efforts investigate the study of viral genomes genetic maps genes and gene expression gene products and genetic basis of virus functions and biological properties. Molecular Biology of Plant Viruses analyzes collates and reviews such published information. Additionally it demonstrates the mechanisms of genetic variability brings out the molecular basis of virus transport in plants and of virus transmission by vectors and of disease symptomatology and discusses molecular biology of viroids and transgenic plants. It also treats the recently discovered genetic phenomenon of gene silencing and the gene for gene interactions between the hosts and plant viruses. Molecular Biology of Plant Viruses is an excellent reference providing insight into the exciting research developments made in the field. 282 pp. Seller Inventory # 73376

About this Item: Taylor Francis Ltd, United Kingdom, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Considered the most significant recent agrarian movement in Mexico, the 1994 EZLN uprising by the indigenous peasantry of Chiapas attracted world attention. Timed to coincide with the signing of the NAFTA agreement, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation reasserted the value of indigenous culture and opposed the spread of neo-liberalism associated with globalization. About this Item: Taylor Francis Ltd, United Kingdom, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Considered the most significant recent agrarian movement in Mexico, the 1994 EZLN uprising by the indigenous peasantry of Chiapas attracted world attention. Timed to coincide with the signing of the NAFTA agreement, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation reasserted the value of indigenous culture and opposed the spread of neo-liberalism associated with globalization. The essays in this collection examine the background to the 1994 uprising, together with the reasons for this, and also the developments in Chiapas and Mexico in the years since. About this Item: Liverpool University Press, United Kingdom, 2009. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. A PDF version of this book is available for free in open access via the OAPEN Library platform ( oapen. org). Twilight of the Avant-Garde: Spanish Poetry 1980-2000 addresses the central problem of contemporary Spanish poetry: the attempt to preserve the scope and ambitiousness of modernist poetry at the end of the twentieth century. Jonathan Mayhew first offers a critical analysis of the called poetry of experience of Luis Garcia Montero, a tendency that is based on the supposed obsolescence of the modernist poetics of the first half of the century. While the poetry of experience presents itself as a progressive attempt to normalise poetry, to make it accessible to the common reader, Mayhew views it as a reactionary move that ultimately reduces poetry to the status of a minor genre. The author then turns his attention to the poetry of Jose Angel Valente and Antonio Gamoneda, whose poetry embodies the continuation of modernism, and to the work of younger women poets of the last two decades of the twentieth century. Throughout this controversial and provocative book, Mayhew challenges received notions about the value of poetic language in relation to the larger culture and society. It turns out that the cultural ambition of modernist poetics is still highly relevant even in an age in which more cynical views of literature seem prevalent. Ultimately, Mayhew writes as an advocate for the survival of more challenging and ambitious modes of poetic writing in the postmodern age. Seller Inventory # AAN9781846311833

About this Item: Editorial La Abeja Negra, Bogota, 1990. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Jacobo Arenas ("nom de guerre" of Luis Morantes, 23 January 1924 - 10 August 1990) was a Colombian guerrilla and ideological leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC). He was also one of the FARC figures involved in the organization and creation of the Patriotic Union political party in 1985. He was fluent in several languages other than his native Spanish, including English and Russian. Born at Bucaramanga in Santander Department, Jacobo Arenas spent most of his life involving himself in the activities of Marxist revolution in Colombia since the 1960s. During this time, he mostly lived in the mountains, jungles and remote villages. Arenas sometimes had to hide from those who wanted to capture him, including Colombian security forces, the CIA (which Arenas believed responsible for numerous alleged plots against him) and eventually paramilitary fighters as well. Arenas is thought to have followed the example of Che Guevara, who changed his way of life when he saw that the people of Latin America were facing hardships during a regionwide motorcycle trip when he was a senior year medical student. Jacobo Arenas admired Che Guevara and started his life as a revolutionary due to similar realizations, first through his experiences in the Colombian Communist Party (PCC) and finally in the FARC. Arenas is credited for helping to lay the foundation for the FARC's organizational structure and promoting its later development into what is usually considered as one of the strongest and longest lasting Marxist guerrilla movements in the world. To implement the policy of "standing steadily", he taught them in several areas, such as anthropology, international military law and counter techniques for any changing situation. Jacobo Arenas was seen as a hero among other Latin American Communist revolutionaries both inside and outside Colombia. For example, the ELN commander Antonio García once stated Jacobo Arenas was a hero to him, just as he considered Simón Bolívar, José Martí and Che Guevara as heroes, in an interview with a Latin American journalist. Some minor wear. Spanish text. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 037287
