"This book seeks to trace the growth of multiple identities that underline civil society in colonial India. Identity is indeed a tricky notion. It is perceived differently even by the same individual according to context and its articulation is conditioned by individual, regional, religious, linguistic and other specificities. Accordingly, this work is much less concerned about epistemology, the structure and implications of identity in the abstract. The common focus of all the contributors is the nature of community and national identity in India. In their different ways, they seek to explore the hidden recesses of shared imaginations that shaped competing identities at various historical points in different regions. In the context of contemporary concerns about nationalism and nation building, 284 pp. Seller Inventory # 39501

However considerable research work has been done in the last few decades on the variations of social formation emanating from the relationship between tribes and forests in India. Questions multiplied over time. To what extent were the tribes or communities residing in forests living in isolation of peasant society. How far were they prudent in the use of forest resources in different periods. How did state formations affect natural resource exploitation and the respective social formations over time. What was the exact nature of colonial watershed in ecologic terms. How have the issues related to forest management and community rights been tackled in post colonial years. In the wake of the emergence of subaltern studies in the 1980s and the ecological studies in the 1990s a need was felt to approach these questions from new perspectives. The present volume mainly combines revised versions of the papers presented at a panel organized by the Indian History Congress in 2001. It includes twelve articles besides an introduction by the editors. It argues that since the 1970s old issues of economic development and social integration have given place to the new ones of community culture power class and identify in recent years. The contributors represent multiple viewpoints question old assumptions revise them whenever possible and often take altogether new positions to stimulate academic interest to promote further studies and research on the subject. 226 pp. Seller Inventory # 51112

About this Item: Manohar Publishers & Distributors, 2010. Hardcover. Condition: New. Approaches to the Study of History of Science underwent critical changes in the last two centuries before they could more definitively tilt towards the social dimensions of the making of science. The development of history of science during the last fifty years has been marked by a proliferation of methods and perspectives rather than by the emergence of a consensus. Given this General background of the intellectual Tradition of Writing history of science, an effort is made here to assemble a group of scholars from different Parts of India to write about 250 years of development of `science` in the Indian context, covering late pre-colonial, Colonial and post-colonial periods. The present volume is a selected and revised version of the Original presentation made in a national seminar at the University of Calcutta. The contributions revolve around a few thematic contexts: the east-west encounter, the Diffusion theory, the colonial impact, the nationalist and the post-colonial response and globalization. About this Item: Manohar Publishers & Distributors, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. Concern for the environment is not new; it has always existed. One of the flash points in the inner conflicts within human societies of the past was fuelled by the continues efforts to resolve the legitimate use of the natural world. Nature is one of those spaces where we observe the most intense form of class struggle and power politics -the more privileged control the natural resources. The rapid unfolding of power relations, the rise of new technology to exploit the environment, the growing resource crunch, and a perceived `environmental crisis` have resulted in the development of a new field of study -environmental history, an important gateway to knowledge in general and Environmental Studies in Particular. Situating Environment History, brings together several eminent scholars who share a common interest in the environmental history of South Asia. The work is divided in four sections. In Section I, Understanding Environmental History, Karl Jacoby, Alok Kumar Ghosh, Arun Bandopadhyaya and Archana Prasad contribute to our understanding of environmentalism, its historiography and the role of state legislation and the popular response thereto. In Section II, Communities on the Margin, Viniya Damodaran and Ritajyoti Bandyopadhyay focus on different communities in the periphery lying outside the supposed `mainstream` and their fight for their own perceptions of `justice` and `legitimate claims`. In Section III, Colonialism, Post-Colonialism, the State and the management of Nature, Kaushik Roy, Arabinda Samanta, Amal Das, Sahara Ahmed, Jagdish N. Sinha and Sumit Guha look at the evolution of state policy on environmental questions through different periods of Indian history. In Section IV, Beyond India, Rita Pemberton, Lawrence Gundersen and Tridib Chakrabarti study environmental issues in the countries beyond India.
