About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Condition: NEW. Reprinted from edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. About this Item: Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 1st December , 1970, 1970. Printed boards, 4to, 29 cm, 97 pp, 6 ills, 57 plates, (2 in colour). Lots 2862-2904. ".manuscripts in their own right first became an important element in [Major Abbey's] library with the purchase in 1946 from the executors of his friend C. H. St. John Hornby, of W. H. Smith and the Ashendene Press, of almost the entire collection of manuscripts which that discriminating collector owned at the time of his death. None of Major Abbey’s 69 Hornby manuscripts is included in the present sale but his second major acquisition - the purchase of manuscripts of Sir Sydney Cockerell in 1956 and 1957 - is represented by as many as eleven manuscripts. These include two fascinating little Dutch Books of Hours of c.1415 and c.1420 (lots 2873, 2875) which have long been known to art-historians and which throw much light on the development of Dutch illumination at the beginning of the fifteenth century; a Psalter with a page illuminated by the most individual of thirteenth-century English artists, William de Brailes (lot 2867); a little Prayer Book written and illuminated by Joachinus de Gigantibus for Pope Sixtus IV (lot 2887); and -outside the main chronological range of the sale - some examples of the calligraphy of William Morris which are a landmark in the history of the revival of italic handwriting (lot 2902). The most splendid manuscript in the sale too, the Ruskin Hours (lot 2868), a north French manuscript of the early fourteenth century of a quality which is rarely seen in the sale-room today, though not purchased directly from Sir Sydney, who bought it from Ruskin’s heir in 1902 and sold it later to Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, had also attracted the sharp eye of the great scholar and is enriched with a description of vast learning and meticulous accuracy in his irreproachably neat hand, not to mention a handsome binding executed by his brother."Italian manuscripts formed the largest single national group in Major Abbey’s collection and . [18 such] manuscripts are included in the present sale. Outstanding among them, in addition to those already mentioned, are the Birago Hours, illuminated in Milan c. 1465 by Belbello of Pavia and another artist (lot 2883), a Pontano in an early Neapolitan gold-tooled binding (lot 2889) and the Manzoli Hours written by Pierantonio Sallando in Bologna in 1496 (lot 2893). Of the non-Italian manuscripts we should mention two early Augustine manuscripts, one of the ninth century (lot 2862) and one, from the Abbey of Michelsberg near Bamberg, of the eleventh (lot 2863), a Psalter of c.1200 from the diocese of Constance (lot 2865), the Belknap Hours, an interesting English manuscript of the late fourteenth century (lot 2869) and a large Livy in French, written probably in Metz in 1440, with a colophon naming the scribe and the illuminator and a miniature showing them at work (lot 2876)." - from the foreword. Boards a little rubbed, otherwise near Very Good, Seller Inventory # ABE-22008
