L'Asia del S. Giovanni di Barros, Consigliere: BARROS, João de

About this Item: Venezia, Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1562. Two volumes in one, 4to (203x148 mm). (10), 200; (8, of which the last is a blank), 228 leaves. The second part opens with a separate title-page: Dell'Asia la seconda deca del S. Giovanni di Barros. Italic type with woodcut initials, printer's device on both titles. Early 18th-century half calf, gilt spine with lettering-piece, panels covered with a nice colored paper, marbled edges (slightly worn and rubbed, corners and top of the spine damaged). At the last leaf verso is a long ownership's note by a certain Leonida Antonio Falgidi from S. Polo Sabino (Rieti), dated November 24, 1706. First title-page soiled, some staining especially at the beginning and at the end of the volume, all in all a good copy. FIRST EDITION, second issue (the first issue bears the date 1561), of the first Italian version of Barros' first and second "Decades', in the only separately published translation of the sixteenth century. The first book is dedicated by the translator Alfonso de Ulloa to Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (the dedication is dated Venice, August 18, 1561); the second book opens with a dedication, dated Venice, October 15, 1561, addressed by Ulloa to the Portuguese gentleman Duarte Gomez (cf. N. Lepri, Appunti sul "camino della virtù' di Alfonso de Ulloa, in: "Il viaggio della traduzione: atti del convegno, Firenze, 13-16 giugno 2006", M.G. Profeti, ed., Florence, 2007, p. 64). João de Barros was the official court chronicler of King John III and chief administrator of the Casa da Índia, the company in charge of the overseas spice trade. His position gave him access to military and administrative documents relating to the Portuguese colonies in Asia and Africa. His magnum opus, the Décadas da Ásia, follows the structure of Livy's "Decades'. The first Decada appeared in 1552, the second in 1553. The third was published a year after the publication of Ulloa's translation and therefore it was not translated from Portuguese for a long time. A fourth final Decada, left incomplete, was published posthumously in 1615. "Their success was immediate, especially abroad - in Portugal, like other historians of recent events, he was accused of partiality and unfairness - copies soon became extremely rare, the first two "Decades' were translated into Italian before the third appeared, and Pope Pius IV is said to have placed Barros' portrait (or bust) next to the statue of Ptolemy. Barros had prepared himself very thoroughly for his task. Yet he read everything, pored over maps and chronicles and documents from the East, and even bought a Chinese slave to translate for him. With this enthusiasm, his unfailing sense of order and proportion, and his clear and copious style he necessarily produced a work of permanent value. His manner is lofty, even pompous, worthy of the great events described. If his history is less vivid and interesting than Castanheda's, that is because he wrote not as an eyewitness [only the account of the Portuguese fleet leaving Lisbon is firsthand] or actor in them but as Court historian" (A.F.G. Bell, Portuguese Literature, Oxford, 1922, pp. 193-194). Barros' "Decades' has become a classic of voyage literature. They contain references to Columbus and the Americas, but they chiefly deal with Portuguese discoveries in the period between 1415 and 1539. They include the African voyages and the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope; the voyages of Vasco da Gama, Bartholomeo Diaz, Francisco and Alfonso d'Albuquerque, Pedro Cabral, Nuno da Cunhas, and others; the activities of the Portuguese in India, with descriptions of Goa, Malacca, Java and the kingdom of Deccan, and also references to China. "In his "Prologue' [not present in the Italian edition] to the first Década, João de Barros presents an outline account of how he came to write the work. He notes that already in 1520 he had asked the king Dom Manuel to allow him to embark on the project, showing him his text on the emperor Clarimundo as a sample of his style. The king had. Decada Quarta da Asia, dos feitos que: COUTO, Diogo do.

About this Item: Lisbon, Impresso por Pedro Crasbeeck, no Collegio de Santo Agostinho, 1602., 1602. Folio (27.3 x 18.3 cm.), eighteenth-century cat's-paw sheep (some wear, rubbed), spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, citron leather lettering piece in second compartment from head, gilt letter, text-block edges marbled. Woodcut royal arms on title, woodcut initials. Main text in two columns. Old inscription scored in lower margin of title page. In very good, albeit incomplete condition, lacking two leaves. Ownership inscription of Antonio Leite on recto of front free endleaf. (12), 207 ll., lacking T3-4 [ff. 111-12, with part of Book 6, Chapters 6-7]. *** FIRST EDITION of a major early work on Asia: "as a pioneer Orientalist, Diogo do Couto ranks with João de Barros" (Boxer p. 17). Continuing Barros' history (Decades I-III appeared 1552-63), Couto wrote Decades IV through XII. This fourth Decade covers the years 1526-36. Barros had left copious material for a volume to follow his third Decade; his manuscript was edited by João Baptista Lavanha and published in Madrid, 1615, with the title Quarta decada da Asia de João de Barros. Although Barros's fourth Decade covers the same ground as Couto's, it is an entirely different work.Couto (Lisbon 1542-Goa 1616), spent the better part of 50 years in India, which gave him a different perspective than that of Barros, for Couto was often personally acquainted with the scenes, events and persons described in his work. "The sententious generalities of the majestic Barros are replaced by bitter protests and practical suggestions. He is a critic of abuses rather than persons. He writes from the point of view of the common soldier, as one who had seen both sides of the tapestry of which Barros smoothly ignored the snarls and thread-ends . . . He can, however, write excellent prose, and he gives more of graphic detail and individual sayings and anecdotes than his predecessor" (Bell, Portuguese Literature p. 196). Couto's manuscripts of the Decades suffered at the hands of enemies and the elements; one was on a ship captured by the English, another two were stolen, one vanished, and one laid unpublished until 1788. The fourth Decade was the only one that was published immediately upon its completion. The verso of the title page of the present copy contains a "Carta de su Ma- // gestade pera Diogo do Couto // Chronista & guarda mór da torre do Tombo do esta- // do da India."; it is blank in the variant issue. The rest of both issues appear to be from the same setting of type, except that the variant contains the signature 2, while this signature is absent from the present copy.*** Howgego I, 279 (C208). About this Item: Regia Officina Typographica, 1778. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Edition.Complete Set. Year 1778. Med. 18x12 cm. 24 vols. 12mo. With engraved portraits of Barros, Couto, Henry the Navigator, and Afonso de Albuquerque, With 6 maps, one in duplicate. The best and most complete edition of what is considered the most comprehensive work on Portuguese colonial history by João de Barros (decades I-IV) and Diego de Couto. The first edition to include decades X and XI. Books 2 and 3 of the "Decada Segunda" offer a detailed narrative of Afonso de Albuquerque's expedition to the Arabian Gulf and his conquest of Ormuz in 1507. The island remained under Portuguese occupation from 1515 to 1622. As vassals of the Portuguese state, the Kingdom of Ormuz jointly participated in the 1521 invasion of Bahrain that ended Jabrid rule of the Arabian archipelago. - This is "the best edition of this famous work on Portuguese colonial history. The first edition appeared at Lisbon, Madrid and Paris from 1552 to 1645. It consists of 12 "Decadas" (decades), comprising the history of the years 1420-1600. Only Decadas I, II, III and a part of IV are by João de Barros, the rest is by Diogo de Couto, who begins his part also with Decada IV, so that there are two Decadas IV" (Laures). The Portuguese historian and civil servant Barros had equipped an expedition to the Amazon, but its failure brought him to the verge of poverty. His mercantile ambitions destroyed, Barros retreated into the sanctuary of historical studies. Written at the instigation of the king, Barros first published Décadas da Asia in the middle of the sixteenth century, and it is still regarded as one of the supreme accounts of European exploration and colonisation, and famously includes work on Magellan and his discoveries in the Americas. The first volume, Asia de Ioam de Barros, was published in 1552, and the subsequent volumes of his work in 1555, 1563 and 1615. It was continued by Diogo de Couto, royal historiographer to Phillip II, whose work is generally more critical. Couto not only furthers Barros's original discussion, but also expands on the arguments for the decline of Portuguese influence in the east. The first eight volumes of this set consist of the four original Décadas; volume nine is a life of Barros by Manoel Severino de Faria together with an index; the remaining fourteen volumes comprise all of Couto's ensuing books, the last volume an index. De Barros (1496-1570), head agent for the Portuguese overseas trade authority "Casa da Índia", managed to persuade King João III to commission from him a history of the Portuguese in India (including Asia and southeast Africa). The result earned him renown as one of the first great Portuguese historians, and the title of a "Portuguese Livy". The 'Decades' contain "the early history of the Portuguese in India and Asia and reveal careful study of Eastern historians and geographers, as well as of the records of his own country. They are distinguished by clearness of exposition and orderly arrangement. They are also lively accounts. First Edition. 18 x 12 cm. Seller Inventory # 000128

Although Barros's fourth Decade covers the same ground as Couto's it is an entirely different work.Couto (Lisbon 1542-Goa 1616) spent the better part of 50 years in India, which gave him a different perspective than that of Barros, for Couto was often personally acquainted with the scenes, events and persons described in his work.
