There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front endpaper. "Bambi, a Life in the Woods, originally published in Austria as Bambi: Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde is a 1923 Austrian novel written by Felix Salten and published by Ullstein Verlag. The novel traces the life of Bambi, a male roe deer, from his birth through childhood, the loss of his mother, the finding of a mate, the lessons he learns from his father and experience about the dangers posed by human hunters in the forest. An English translation by Whittaker Chambers was published in North America by Simon & Schuster in 1928, and the novel has since been translated and published in over 30 languages around the world. Illustrated by Kurt Weise (1887-1974), a German born illustrator whose first critical success was these illustrations for Felix Salten's Bambi (1st publication 1923 in German as "Bambi, A Life In The Woods") copyrighted in 1929 by Simon & Schuster. This classic book was first published in Austria in 1923 and the first edition in the US was 1928, published in a first impression of 75,000 copies. This book carries the 1929 date on the title page which corresponds with the copyright date of 1929 on the copyright page, reflecting the inclusion of the acclaimed illustrations by Kurt Wiese. Hardcover has hunter green cloth board with gold deer design on front and gold lettering on spine, but no dust jacket. Spine shows sun fading. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked, although at least one corner was dog-eared as a page mark. Copyright 1929. Early printing (within the same year) of 1929 copyright. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.
