About this Item: MIT Press Ltd, United States, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Original commentary on the work of philosopher John Perry by prominent contemporary analytic philosophers, with Perry s detailed and original responses; topics include the metaphysics of identity, semantics, and philosophy of mind.John Perry, Henry Waldgrave Stuart Professor of Philosophy at Stanford University, is one of a handful of contemporary analytic philosophers to combine the focused approach of most current work in analytic philosophy with the more expansive systems-building of earlier analytic philosophers and contemporary philosophers in other disciplines. Perry, like W.V.O. Quine, Donald Davison, David Lewis, and Hilary Putnam, focuses on narrow topics across a broad range of subjects. In this volume, leading contemporary analytic philosophers contribute original essays in each of the areas that have been most influenced by Perry s work -- metaphysics, language, and mind. Perry himself contributes detailed and original replies. After a comprehensive introduction to Perry s work by the editors that places semantics at the heart of Perry s philosophical strategy, the essays discuss Perry s contributions to the metaphysics of identity, the philosophy of language -- in particular, contributions related to reference and unarticulated constituents -- and the philosophy of mind. The essays and replies provide new perspectives on Perry s philosophical contributions over the last four decades, and yield insights into contemporary debates on these topics. ContributorsRobert Audi, Kent Bach, Patricia Blanchette, Herman Cappelen, Eros Corazza, Ernie Lepore, Brian Loar, Peter Ludlow, Genoveva Marti, Michael McKinsey, Stephen Neale, Michael O Rourke, John Perry, Francois Recanati, Cara Spencer, Kenneth A. Taylor, Corey Washington. Seller Inventory # AAH9780262651110

About this Item: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2009. Paperback. Condition: New. Revised ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Is linguistic meaning to be accounted for independently of the states of mind of language users, or can it only be explained in terms of them? If the latter, what account of the mental states in question avoids circularity? In this book Brian Loar offers a subtle and comprehensive theory that both preserves the natural priority of the mind in explanations of meaning, and gives an independent characterisation of its features. the nature of meaning and its relation to the mind is probably the area of paramount concern among philosophers. The theory presented here, by its reach and substance and the thoroughness and sophistication of its development, makes a major contribution to the debate. Seller Inventory # AAV9780521338264

About this Item: Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 1998. Paperback. Condition: New. Revised ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. What is intentionality? Intentionality is a distinguishing characteristic of states of mind (such as beliefs, thoughts, wishes, dreams, and desires): that they are about things outside themselves. About this book: William Lyons explores various ways in which philosophers have tried to explain intentionality, and then suggests a new way. Part I of the book gives a critical account of the five most comprehensive and prominent current approaches to intentionality. These approaches can be summarised as the instrumentalist approach, derived from Carnap and Quine and culminating in the work of Daniel Dennett; the linguistic approach, derived from the work of Chomsky and exhibited most fully in the work of Jerry Fodor; the biological approach, developed by Ruth Garrett Millikan, Colin McGinn, and others; the information-processing approach which has been given a definitive form in the work of Fred Dretske; and the functional role approach of Brian Loar. In Part II, Professor Lyons sets out a multi-level, developmental approach to intentionality. Drawing upon work in neurophysiology and psychology, the author argues that intentionality is to be found, in different forms, at the levels of brain functioning, prelinguistic consciousness, language, and at the holistic level of whole person performance which is demarcated by our ordinary everyday talk about beliefs, desires, hopes, intentions, and the other propositional attitudes . Written in a direct, clear, and lively style, the extended survey of contemporary debate in Part I will be invaluable to the student of philosophy of mind or cognitive science as well as to the scholars and graduate students who will find an original new theory to contend with in Part II. About this Item: Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 1998. Paperback. Condition: New. Revised ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.What is intentionality? About this Item: Condition: New. Cambridge University Press, 1986. 284p. Paperback. Series: Cambridge Studies in Philosophy. Is linguistic meaning to be accounted for independently of the states of mind of language users, or can it only be explained in terms of them? If the latter, what account of the mental states in question avoids circularity? In this book Brian Loar offers a subtle and comprehensive theory that both preserves the natural priority of the mind in explanations of meaning, and gives an independent characterisation of its features. the nature of meaning and its relation to the mind is probably the area of paramount concern among philosophers. The theory presented here, by its reach and substance and the thoroughness and sophistication of its development, makes a major contribution to the debate. (Publisher's information). About this Item: Oxford University Press, United Kingdom, 2017. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. One of the most important problems of modern philosophy concerns the place of the mind - and, in particular, of consciousness, meaning, and intentionality - in a physical universe. Brian Loar was a major contributor to the discussion of this problem for over four decades. This volume has two parts: one a selection of Loar s essays on the philosophy of language, the other on the philosophy of mind. A common thread in Loar s essays on language is his engagement with the Gricean program of analyzing linguistic representation in terms of mental representation, thus reducing the semantic to the psychological. In the philosophy of mind he was concerned with understanding consciousness and intentionality (mental representation) from the subjective perspective. The concern that unifies Loar s work in mind and language is how to understand subjectivity in a physical universe. He was committed to the reality of phenomenology, qualia, and the subjective perspective; and he found that phenomena like intentionality and consciousness are, in a certain sense, ineliminable and irreducible to objective ones. At the same time he believed that intentionality and consciousness are grounded in the physical. One of his great contributions was to reconcile these two positions by being a conceptual and explanatory anti-reductionist about both consciousness and intentionality but a metaphysical reductionist nonetheless. He had a deep commitment both to physicalism and to the reality and significance of the subjective point of view. Seller Inventory # AOP9780199673353
