About this Item: J M Dent, London, 1945. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Dust jacket large chunks missing from edges, unclipped in clear protective cover. . Green cloth boards with bright gilt titling and decorations. No ownership marks. 268 pages, including index, frontispiece and 31 futher half tone illustrations, and 19 line drawings, mainly by Samuel Lucas. Clean and tight. `There is no description so hard, nor so profitable,' said Montaigne, as is the description of a man's own life,' but Mr. Hine has made it easier for himself-and possibly more profitable to his readers-by leading a double life, in law and literature. In Part One he shows that the legal profession-so often decried as dryasdust-can be surprisingly human, and at times adventurous. A solicitor is called upon to advise and to defend all sorts and conditions of men in all, sorts and conditions of trouble, and Mr. Hine's accounts of murders, `recollected,In tranquillity,' homicides, justifiable and unjustifiable, breaches of promise, libels and slanders, suicides, and strange death-bed scenes, make some parts of his confessions as exciting as a novel. Yet his preference, evidently, is for the quieter curriculum of a country practice, and for the odd, whimsical experiences to be met with in4the drawing up and reading of last wills and testaments, in pee- g between . those united contradictions, husband and wife in the civil and uncivil correspondence with so-called brother .st6licitors, and in the unpredictable and bewildering behaviour of those `lay gents' nowadays called clients. It was Mr. Hine's good fortune for thirty-five years to be attached to a firm founded as far back as 1591, and as an antiquary he is at his happiest revealing what he discovered in its attics and its cellars: the rolls of thirty manors, some of them held upon the quaintest customs; the acta of the archdeaconry setting out the crimes committed by the clergy and the penances imposed upon their erring people; relics of Byron; letters from the poet Andrew Marvell; account books of the turnpike road-maker, McAdam; and memories, more recent, of Henry Hawkins, an articled clerk, fired out of the firm, who afterwards became famous as Sir Henry Hawkins, and infamous amongst wrongdoers as `the hanging judge.' 'It takes more than the law,' declares Mr. Hine, 'to make a lawyer; it takes all sorts of men and women to make one man.' Accordingly, in Part Two of his book, and in separate chapters for each of the learned professions, he has thought it fitting to describe the parsons, doctors, schoolmasters, and scoundrels who, for good or evil, have left their mark on his life. It is amongst the writers of our time, however, that Mr. Hine has spent most of his hard-won leisure, and he has much to say about his associations with Gabriele d'Annunzio, Cardinal Gasquet, W. B. Yeats, Alice Meynell, W. H. Davies, Clifford Bax, H. G. Wells, G. K. Chesterton, and Bernard Shaw. The Confessions close upon a graver note with a chapter, `Touching upon Religion,' in which the author, as a lawyer, ventures to make an apologia pro vita sua, and as a mere layman his humble confession of faith. There are fifty illustrations in half-tone and line; initial letters of Renaissance design; tail-pieces by Charles E. Brock and Samuel Lucas; and an index that has no sins of omission to confess. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 142094

At 22 I was a land surveyor, later a civil engineer; at 29 I had an access of political devotion to a certain chief, now long dead, which led me to abandon my profession, and go into journalism, with the fantastic notion I could aid his return to power?[discussing himself] it is difficult for the man past 50 to stay with the bright and eager boys?your life has not been adverse to your aspirations respecting poetry, but the contrary. You have lived, done your duty, felt the noble emotions, studied, had joy in poetry?" He gives a critique of other's poetry and quotes other well-known poets, with brief handwritten note at end of the page. (3-4) ALS and TLS, with envelope, to Asbury, 10 April 1908, Ottawa.
