About this Item: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, 2004. Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 178pp. Government records, papers of eminent persons, business records, institutional papers, photo and oral archives and similar other historical records constituting documentary heritage of a people are capable of transposing the scholars, students and users of history in those heritage days which can be felt, touched and experienced. Heritage is also experienced through monuments, historic buildings, museum objects and artefacts, but documentary heritage through archives is not as popular as monuments and museum objects are, though it is put into use by governments, business houses, institutions and scholars. The present work, therefore, focuses on archives, its definition, connotation, classification and arrangement. It also deals with institutional archives like the Indian imperial record department now the National Archives of India. How the keepers of records of the Raj experienced British Indian History through the archives has been discussed as well. The role of the Indian imperial archives in shaping the Indian historiography and historians like Sir Jadunath Sarkar, Professor Kalikaranjan Qanungo, Dr. R.C. Majumdar, Professor Nilakanta Sastri and others has been chronicled in this book. Keeping archives for historians and scholars demands their scientific preservation and protection from theft, insects, humidity, acidity and pollutants. This aspect of care and repair of records has been discussed in details in one easy-to-understand chapter written by a conservation expert. Seller Inventory # 395189

About this Item: Manohar Publishers & Distributors, 2006. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. Scott Waring, a British historian, of the early nineteenth century wrote, ?The Mahrattas were once a mighty nation. How they rose, and how they fell, may surely challenge enquiry? This was, perhaps, the main reason why administrators, researchers and historians-both Indian and foreign have been attracted towards the history of Marathas from seventeenth century till this day. A contention that is amply reiterated by the scope of the present volume. This work on Maratha historiography is divided into three parts. It starts with an account of the writing of the foreign historians Cosme da Guarda (Portuguese), M.C. Sprengel (German) and Rober Orme, Scott Waring. Elphinstone and Grant Duff (British). The second part of the work is devoted to the Archival movement in Bombay Presidency in the colonial period and the popular movement launched by the Maratha scholars against the rigid policy regarding the access to the State Archives, and the amount of source material collected by them. The contribution of Kashinath Narayan Sane, Vasudeo Vaman Khare, Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade, Dattatraya Balwant Parasnis is discussed in this part. The work also analyses the contribution of the medieval chroniclers or the bakkarkars, to historical writings on Marathas and an assessment of the major modern Indian historians, namely G.S. Sardesai, Jadunath Sarkar, and Surendra Nath Sen along with many others. The post Independence phase is discussed by the author in the last chapter. Contents:- Part I : FOREIGN HISTORIANS OF THE MARATHAS : 1. Cosme Da Guarda : The Portuguese Historian 2. Early British Historians : i. Captain James Kerr ii. Robert Orme 3. Marthias Christian Sprengel : The German Historian 4. Later British Historians : i. Edward Scott Waring ii. James Mill 5. Mountstuart Elphinstone 6. About this Item: Mittal Publications, 2014. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The development paradigm of our country has always ignored the concerns of tribal dominated areas, looking upon them as resource zones for earning revenue through minerals, timbers and forest produces etc. Lalgarh- Junglemahal is one of such areas where the marginalized peasant entity does not only suffer from poverty but also from apathy of the state administration which in the long-run sparked off social unrest. The ethnic disturbances in our country are not mere manifestation of the sense of alienation suffered by the so-called marginalized people; they also speak primarily of the political and economic failures in term of developmental programme of the government. Overall, in the genesis of any social unrest there lays some reasons like deprivation in various socio-economic spheres, irregular distribution of wealth or irregular development programme, exploitation and tyranny etc. Due to spark of globalization when a section of people is getting all sorts of benefits like security of food, shelter, health, education and occupational opportunities, the other half of the same society is totally in dark, deprived, live on hands to mouth and fight with their destiny for survival. At this juncture at Junglemahal, the Maoist got a place among the tribal people of this area often called as ‘adivasi-moolvasi’ people express their solidarity through symbolically expressed identity. Under this backdrop a multi-disciplinary team of Social scientists from Anthropological Survey of India carried out an empirical study at Lalgarh- Junglemahal-area to find out the reason of social unrest. The study becomes a milestone approach in understanding a social reality from grass-root level. The administrators, planners and concerned NGOs will get an insight view of a social reality which will enable them in refining their approach of implementation of any developmental programmes in a forest clad, tribal dominated area. Reddy to list out a sample of the perennial problems a plural society has to face, that cannot be wished away. There are also suggestions made by him as to how to tackle the problems effectively. Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad makes clear distinction between pluralism and multicultural pluralism. As far Indian scenario is concerned he distinguishes two parallel processes of 'an ethnic nation' and 'nation state' that are in operation. The above form the introductory part of the book. The rest of the book has articles on three major areas comprising of 'cultural pluralism in the context of tribes, contexts in which both 'religious and cultural pluralism' are operative, 'linguistic pluralism, and case studies of specific ethnic groups who have imbibed pluralistic elements. About this Item: B.R. Publishing Corporation, 2013. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Aurangzeb and the North-East frontier. 3. Expeditions under Mir Jumla. 4. Ram Singh's campaign. 5. Years of inaction. 6. North eastern challenge. 7. Mughal impact on north-east India. 8. Epilogue. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. The book offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of the Mughal relations with North-East India from 1661-1714, that is from the time of Mir Jumlas campaign to the death of Rudra Singh (1696-1714) the Ahom ruler who united the chieftaincies and monarchies in the North-Eastern region to resist the expansionist policy of Aurangzeb. The value of the book lies in the simple fact that it is the first of its kind. Authorities, such as Sir Edward Gait, S.N. Bhattacharya, Sir J.N. Sarkar have earlier dwelt with the historical importance of the problem but they have treated it partially. No attempt was made by them to project the nature of Mughal contracts with the monarchies in the eastern division of the North-East, namely Jayantia Cachar and Tripura and the chieftaincies in the foothills of the Garos and the Khasias that lie on the borders of Bengal. These social movements have impacted tribal culture and tradition in multiple ways. Initially most of these movements were local and largely reformative in character. But as interaction of tribals with outside forces, culture and tradition increased, the nature, magnitude and intensity of social movements also increased. In contrary to the past, gradually these movements shifted from the issue of social transformation in their culture and lifestyle to their dignity, honour, human rights and so on. Of late, electronic media and civil society organizations have provided significant space to these movements, both at the local level and at national and international level. Hence, the support base, either passive or active, of these movements have substantially increased during last couple of decades. In many cases these movements have either halted, slowed or forced the change agents to rethink on the model of development introduced in tribal areas. Articles included in the book deal with nature, types, history and consequences of social movements going on in tribal India, both in historical and contemporary perspective. Articles are both theoretical as well as field based. Attempts have been made by contributors to search roots and nature of changing interface between tribes and their local ecology and environment. The book will be useful for planners, policy makers, change agents, researchers and other professionals. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 116519

Development of rural areas and the rural people has become the primary concern of the economic planning and development process of the country. It became increasingly clear that apart from an effort to increase agricultural and industrial production, it is also necessary to address directly the basic problems of rural area. The increasing interest in rural development is a result of the realization that a systematic effort is necessary to create better living conditions in the rural areas where the vast majority of populations of developing countries reside. Creation of more effective employment opportunities and exploring new avenues for their engagement in economically gainful activities will go a long way in ameliorating rural India.
