About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: Spanish. Brand new Book. Despues me he puesto adrede a componer otras, y dicen que lo he hecho peor. Seller Inventory # APC9781540725790

About this Item: Grove Weidenfeld, 1990. hardcover. 1st edition. New York. 1990. November 1990. Grove Weidenfeld. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. ISBN:080211086x. Translated from the Portuguese by Ellen Watson. 256 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Carin Goldberg. Author photograph by Jerry Bauer. FROM THE PUBLISHER - In March of 1936, Brazil s Fascist government seized twenty-eight-year-old Communist revolutionary Olga Benario and her lover, the legendary Communist guerrilla leader Luis Carlos Prestes. In September, after spending six months in a Brazilian prison, Olga-German, Jewish, and now seven months pregnant-was nonetheless classified as extremely dangerous and was deported to Nazi Germany. Olga Benario was one of the most remarkable Communist activists of the twentieth century. Blessed with a genius for organization and strategy and devoted intellectually, morally, and personally to the Communist cause, she crisscrossed the globe educating and activating legions to combat the worldwide plagues of nazism and fascism. Born in Munich, she became a member of the Communist Youth there at age fourteen. Five years later, she masterminded and led a daring raid on the Moabit Prison in Berlin to free her then-lover, the Communist intellectual Otto Braun. Together they escaped to Moscow, where they quickly rose in the ranks of the international Communist movement. At twenty-six, she was chosen to serve as bodyguard to Prestes, who was then also in Moscow. Traveling under assumed names, they crossed Europe and North and South America to reach Brazil, where Prestes would launch a revolution against the Fascist regime. The uprising failed, however, and within months, they were seized by the police. Olga continued her activism from within Brazilian and, later, German prisons, sustaining herself through long periods of solitary confinement and constant interrogation with her unwavering dedication to the cause. She also conducted classes for her fellow political prisoners, teaching them Marxist theory and creating and circulating a tiny atlas, drawn from memory, which mapped the advancement of the Nazis through Europe. On November 27, 1936, she gave birth to a healthy girl while in the Gestapo s women s prison in Berlin. Miraculously, she was able to keep her child with her for fourteen months. Young Anita Leocidia Prestes was then turned over to Olga s mother-in-law, who from Paris had petitioned the Gestapo to release both mother and child. But Olga was never to see her daughter again. She was subsequently sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, and in February of 1942, she was sent to her death in the gas chambers at Bernburg. Award-winning Brazilian journalist Fernando Morais provides us with much more than merely an accurate chronology of Olga Benario s astounding political career: he has drawn a stunning historical portrait of this great revolutionary genius and her short, turbulent, and passionate life. inventory #23296 Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The winner of Spain s prestigious Premio Primavera Award, SHADOW WITHOUT A NAME is the English-language debut of one of Mexico s dazzling new young writers. In 1916, on a train heading to the Austro-Hungarian Empire s disastrous Eastern Front, Viktor Kretzschmar and Thadeus Dreyer face each other over a chessboard. It is a game to the death: the winner will take Kretzschmar s identity as a railway signalman and live Out the war in safety. The loser will go to the Front. When the game ends, a sequence of events that will span decades as well as continents has been set in motion. In 1943, the decorated World War I hero and influential Nazi General Thadeus Dreyer is in charge of training doubles to stand in for leading Nazis at dangerous public events. But when the Amphitryon Project falls out of favor with Goering, Dreyer and his team of doubles vanish, and their disappearance remains unsolved. In 1960, an escaped Nazi is uncovered in Buenos Aires, where he has been living under an assumed name. One of the few Nazis to be recaptured, he is extradited to Israel and executed. Only an old Polish count claims to know his true identity, but he dies before it can be revealed. The clues that connect these men are concealed in an old encrypted manuscript that the count has left to his heirs-an unlikely trio of misfits who suddenly find themselves at the center of a dangerous game as they are compelled to decipher the deceits of decades past. Mesmerizing and suspenseful, Shadow Without a Name explores questions of identity and history against the backdrop of the darkest periods of twentieth-century Europe, and stands as an impressive introduction to one of Mexico s most gifted contemporary writers. Ignacio Padilla. represents the continuation and reinvigoration of literature in our country. - CARLOS FUENTES. IGNACIO PADILLA was born in Mexico City, and is the author of several award-winning novels and short-story collections. Shadow Without a Name is the first of his novels to be translated into English.
