April 1991 in Vevey, Schweiz; eigentlich Henry Graham Greene) war ein britischer Schriftsteller. . Leben: . 1926 konvertierte er mit 22 Jahren zur Überraschung seiner anglikanischen Umgebung zum katholischen Glauben. Durch die Konversion wurde auch die Trauung zwischen Graham Greene und der Katholikin Vivien Dayrell-Browning möglich. Das Ehepaar trennte sich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wegen Greenes zahlreicher Affären (er war unter anderem ein häufiger Gast in Bordellen), blieb aber bis zu seinem Tod verheiratet. Zeitlebens war er ein Kritiker der Amtskirche; eines seiner Bücher, Die Kraft und die Herrlichkeit (The Power and the Glory), wurde 1953 von Giuseppe Kardinal Pizzardo (Sekretär des heiligen Offizium) mit einem Bannspruch belegt. . Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges arbeitete Greene von 1942 bis 1943 in einer Sondermission des britischen Auslandsgeheimdienstes für das Außenministerium in Westafrika.[5] In dieser Eigenschaft war er dem Spion Kim Philby unterstellt. Aus dieser Zeit stammen Greenes präzise Kenntnisse der verborgenen Seiten des Diplomatischen Korps, die er in seinen Romanen (etwa Unser Mann in Havanna) genussvoll ironisierend darstellte. Seine zum Teil außerordentlich erfolgreichen Romane thematisieren immer wiederkehrend zentrale Punkte der human condition wie Schuld, (Un-)Glaube und Verrat im äußeren Gewand von Abenteuergeschichte, spy story und Krimi. Greene war unter anderem ein vehementer Kritiker des Kolonialismus und seiner Auswüchse. . Seine weltweite Beliebtheit zeigt sich auch an den zahlreichen Verfilmungen fast aller seiner Romane durch Regisseure wie John Ford, Otto Preminger, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Neil Jordan und Carol Reed (Der dritte Mann, Unser Mann in Havanna), und in den letzten Jahren vor allem Das Ende einer Affäre mit Julianne Moore und Ralph Fiennes und Der stille Amerikaner mit Michael Caine und Brendan Fraser. Zu seinem großen Freundeskreis gehörten der Schriftsteller Evelyn Waugh (ein katholischer Konvertit wie Greene selbst), Omar Torrijos, der Präsident von Panama, und der Filmproduzent Alexander Korda. In seinen späten Jahren wurde Greene zu einem scharfen Kritiker der US-Außenpolitik und unterstützte die Politik von Fidel Castro. Von François „Papa Doc" Duvalier, Staatschef von Haiti, wurde Graham Greene nach dem kritischen Buch Die Stunde der Komödianten, in dem der Autor das Terrorregime der Tontons Macoutes darstellte, mit Verleumdungen verfolgt (so bezeichnete Duvalier Greene in einer Broschüre als „Folterer"). Zwar war Greene in der Öffentlichkeit über vierzig Jahre lang präsent, dennoch hielt er sein eigenes Privatleben möglichst abgeschirmt. Das führte zu der Frage, ob er seine Arbeit für den Geheimdienst wirklich nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg beendet habe. Im Orientexpress heißt es: Ein Romanschriftsteller ist so etwas wie ein Spion. Position: Die Schriftstellern Marjorie Bowen und deren Werk The Viper of Milan (1906), das Graham Greene im Alter von vierzehn Jahren gelesen hatte, nannte er selbst als auslösenden Impuls für den Beginn seines Schreibens: "From that moment I began to write".[7] Er war ausserdem begeistert von Joseph Conrad, aber auch vom Spionageromanen von John Buchan (Die 39 Stufen). Für die spätere Entwicklung als Schriftsteller sind sein Großonkel Robert Louis Stevenson und Henry James wichtig.
