About this Item: C.W. Berry, 1997. Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. P/B 112 pages, condition is NEW. Some biographical details are no doubt essential, so that blame or otherwise may be attributed to the right quarters, for the contents of this book. The poet was born in a place of ill-repute! Fish Wynd - opposite the Kirkcaldy Harbour area, on the 14th of May, 1927, some might say an unlucky year for his mother, who later had to survive his playful exploits as young boy, youth and man. He was named Charles Welsh Berry. His father - also Charles - having lived in Glasgow (though originally hailing from Edinburgh) eventually came to rest in Kirkcaldy for the remainder of his life. His mother - Jeannie Welsh - was from nearby Dysart. Some dispute arose from the subsequent marriage, causing the former to be disinherited. Was it, perhaps, an omen of things to come? Straight from school, at age fourteen, he was employed in the local coal mining industry, then on to various other forms of employment, none of which ever daunted his spirit of egalitarianism. A staunch supporter of union activity, he fought articulate, principled battles in the workplace for justice and fair treatment for all. He was also an early C.N.D. campaigner, and one time member of the Communist Party in Fife. Charlie, or Chic to his many friends, colleagues and associates, adopted early on the 'nom de plume' of 'Lochinvar', from Sir Walter Scott's romantic poem of the same name, using this to assault you all anonymously with his thoughts on life in penned verses, through the columns of the Fife Free Press. An arbiter of a philosophical response to all life has to throw at you (useful when being dealt emotionally traumatic blows!), he has also always been a great projector of the jocular and the comic. These poems span a lifetime, and give some insight into the nature of the man. We hope you enjoy reading them - that they may make you laugh, cry, think, remember or in some other way be moved by them. We, the filial group - Sheena, Pat, Roy, Rona and Paul -consider ourselves privileged in seeing the dream fulfilled. Hopefully, someone else will take on the next ninety odd poems! My personal thanks to Paul who gave great help and support to me during the preparation of the poems. Sheena August 1997. Seller Inventory # 062704

About this Item: HOUGHTON MIFFLIN, United States, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. 2008 ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. In his introduction to this volume, President Jimmy Carter writes that The Best American Spiritual Writing ?approaches the writing of both poetry and prose as a spiritual discipline, a way to explore the mysteries of the soul and the soulís relationship with God." As always, editor Philip Zaleski has assembled a wide-ranging and wonderfully eclectic collection that delves headlong into that spiritual discipline, looking to inspire, provoke, and offer insight into modern spirituality and religion. Here you will find Walter Isaacsonís brilliant and provocative portrait of Einsteinís religious life?a cross between his parentsí secularism, his native Judaism, and his Catholic grade-school education. Drawing from his own experience of trying to inhabit multiple worlds, Noah Feldman examines the difficulties facing faith communities as they adhere to tradition yet also strive to be modern, in ?Orthodox Paradox." When ?Meeting the Chinese in St. Paul," Natalie Goldberg, with the help of a broken rhinoceros fan, grapples with this question: how should I live, knowing the world is a confusing place? Pico Iyer weighs in on his tranquil retreat, the holiest place in Japan; Oliver Sacks gives a moving account of a man with retrograde amnesia, striving for a meaningful life devoid of memory; and Ursula K. Le Guin passionately explains, as only she can, the appeal and subtle morality of A. E. Housmanís ?A Shropshire Lad: XXXII." Committed to literary excellence, this ?invaluable collection" (Library Journal) also features poetry from distinguished voices such as Wendell Berry, Maxine Kumin, John Updike, and Charles Wright. As Zaleski writes in his foreword, The Best American Spiritual Writing 2008 proves that the writing in this edition is a stirring ?medium for contemplating, via the things of the flesh, the things of the spirit.". About this Item: World Wisdom Books, United States, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Twenty-five years before Rachel Carson published her famous work Silent Spring, Lord Northbourne coined the phrase organic farming and helped to promote the importance of a holistic approach to the environment. His work, linking spirituality and ecology, has inspired a generation of writings from Wendell Berry to HRH Prince Charles. This book not only features Northbourne s previously unpublished writings, but, also, his private correspondence with Thomas Merton, highlighting the spiritual depth of his writings. Lord Northbourne expresses convincingly enough his horror of the social system that seems to be growing up. The frenzy of destruction by which the nations are now overtaken must be succeeded by some new world, and a society that accepts the consequences of science but uses science to control them. But any society will crash in its turn unless it embodies those qualities of simplicity and honesty which Lord Northbourne finds in life upon the land. -The Times Literary Supplement Walter James (4th Lord Northbourne) was heir to a long line of country landowners distinguished for their public service in Parliament. An avid sportsman he won a silver medal at the 1920 Olympic Games in rowing. The author of several influential books, he coined the phrase organic farming in 1940 in Look to the Land. He passed away in 1982. Seller Inventory # ANB9781933316611
