About this Item: Lulu.com, United Kingdom, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. James Kenneth Stephen (1859-1892), cousin to Virginia Wolf and Vanessa Bell was educated at Eton and King s College Cambridge. He tutored the future King Edward Vll s son Eddy and after a short career as the bar became a full time writer. He published volumes of poetry, mainly of a satirical and humorous nature that have seldom been out of print. JKS developed signs of mental illness and died at Northampton shortly before his 33rd birthday. The present volume consists of previously unpublished poems, mostly written to his younger sister Rosamond who deposited them in King s Library shortly before her death in 1951. They are generally more gentle in their humour and show an affectionate nature not generally associated with JKS. The Stephen family spent most of their annual holidays at Anaverna, a house situated in Co. Louth, Ireland and it was here many of the verses were written for Rosamond on her birthday, September 27th. Notes are included to help explain references in the poems. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from One Hundred Thirty-Eight Generations From Adam: Being a Pedigree Traced From Adam to the Present Time Ten years ago I published in a local paper a pedigree extending back to Kenneth I of Scotland. There was a considerable demand for this on the part of relatives and friends and, as I had no means of supplying it, I have now decided to reprint the pedigree in this enlarged and more attractive form. This original pedigree constitutes the last three chapters of the book, and, I have no reason to doubt, is entirely reliable. To this I have added a pedi gree extending back to Adam, as a basis using one found in o hart s Irish Pedigrees, diligently com pared with and enlarged from the histories of Ireland written by the Four Masters and by Keating, and also similar ancient histories of Scotland, which in turn were based on early records, some of which are no longer ex tant. I have presented this simply as a matter of curiosi ty and would have no one suppose that I put any faith in it. To the careful student its sources, method of construc tion, and motives, are matters of deep interest, but can be only touched on in the brief notes I could here give. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Some Eighteenth Century Tracts Concerning North Carolina: With Introductions and Notes This pamphlet is illustrative of a notable incident in the history of the colonial judiciary of North Carolina, the attempt in 1739 to impeach William Smith, Chief Justice of the Province. Little is known of the antecedents of William Smith. He is said to have been a graduate of one of the English universities and to have been a barrister for two years before coming to North Carolina. When he arrived is unknown, but early in 17 31 upon the nomination of Governor George Burrington he was appointed a member of the Council and was commissioned Chief Justice. In April he was also appointed Treasurer of the Province, vice Edward Moseley. However, he soon took a part in the controversies of the time as an opponent of Governor Burrington. On three matters the Governor and the Chief Justice differed. First, the Governor held that the assistants appointed along with the Chief Justice were associate justices and had a right to appear on the bench; on the other hand, Smith claimed that they were merely masters in chancery and not judges, and so he held court without them. Second, Governor Bur rington in consulting the Council, submitted questions in writing and asked for an opinion; Smith held that he should appear in person and discuss the matters with the Council. Finally, there were com plaints regarding excessive fees, especially the port fees; the Gov ernor held that these were determined by the Chief Justice, Smith that Burrington was responsible for them. To the careful student its sources, method of construc tion, and motives, are matters of deep interest, but can be only touched on in the brief notes I could here give. This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Hardback. About this Item: London: J. Almon, 1780, 1780. 8vo., (9 x 5 4/8 inches). 6 engraved folding maps by William Faden, partially hand-colored. Original publisher’s paper boards, title in manuscript on the spine and front cover, uncut (backstrip torn with loss). Provenance: with the library label of Kenneth Nebenzahl on the front paste-down, his sale Christie's New York, 10th April 2012, lot 18 Second edition, first published in the same year, and an EXCEPTIONALLY FINE AND UNSOPHISTICATED COPY. Burgoyne was given command of British troops in Canada in 1777. After successes at Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Edward Burgoyne was overwhelmed by Horatio Gates’s forces at Saratoga. His troops suffered a crippling defeat at Bemis Heights at the Battle of Freeman’s Farm, surrendering in October 1777. Burgoyne had been so convinced of the success of his venture that he had bet ten pounds that he would be victorious even before leaving Britain. In the event the defeat proved a vital turning point in favor of the Continental army in the War of Independence, giving France the encouragement it needed to join the American effort. Believing his defeat to be the result of lack of support from Generals Howe and Clinton, Burgoyne begged first an audience with the King, and then a court martial in order to clear his name. Eventually Burgoyne’s case was heard in the House of Commons, and this is the account of those proceedings: "I read again my orders (I believe for an hundredth time) and I was decided. And I am still convinced that. [nothing]. could have justified me to my country, have saved me from the condemnation of my profession, or produced pardon within my own breast, had I not advanced, and tried a battle with the enemy" (page 15).
