About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln s Contemporaries: William D. Colby, Soldier s Letters; Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources William Davis Colby, the fourth generation of Colbys to bear the name William Davis, was born November 25, 1838, in the log house near Petersburg, Illinois, that his father, Jonathan, had built for his bride, Lydia Ingalls, and brought her to in April, 1837. On his father s side, he was descended from Anthony Colby of Boos Hall, Beccles, England, who came to Boston in 1630 and later became the founder of Ames bury, Massachusetts. Anthony s old house still stands in Amesbury and is occupied by one of his descendants. His great, great grandson, the first William Davis Colby, was a soldier in the last Indian War. For this service he received a land grant to Beech Hill, one mile from the village of Hop kinton, and five miles from Concord, New Hampshire. This old home, also, still stands, but has passed out of family hands and is now the summer home of a Professor of the University of Virginia. On his mother s side the family line of the subject of this sketch dates back to Edmund Ingalls, who came to Salem in 1628 with his brother, Francis. In 1629 the Ingalls brothers and their workmen started a tannery at what is now Lynn, Massachusetts, and so founded a town and the great shoe industry for which the place is still famous. About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Sylvester Judd III was born on July 23, 1813, in Westhampton, Massachusetts to Sylvester Judd II and Apphia Hall, a daughter of Aaron Hall of Norwich, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, one-year attendee at Harvard and later modest Justice of the Peace. His great-grandfather was Rev. Jonathan Judd (1719-1803), clergyman of Southampton, while his grandfather ran the family store. His father, after working in the store in his boyhood, went to Boston for several years, where, according to Judd s sister s biography, he became a voracious reader, returning to the family business, but then becoming editor of The Hampshire Gazette. Sylvester Judd III studied at Hopkins Academy in Hadley, Massachusetts, where he was president of the Literary Society and delivered the valedictorian address. He graduated from Yale College in 1836, and from Harvard Divinity School in 1840. His dissertation was entitled The Uses of Intellectual Philosophy to the Preacher. While a student, on April 4, 1838, Judd traveled to Concord, Massachusetts to meet Ralph Waldo Emerson after reading his essay Epic Poetry. Emerson was pleased by Judd s interest in seeking a mystical identification with Christ.Judd may have been in the audience on August 31, 1837, and heard Emerson s commencement speech to the Phi Beta Kappa Society known as The American Scholar. About this Item: iUniverse, United States, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.In his first book Jeffrey helped hundreds of families dealing with the autism diagnosis and provided his own personal strategies for coping, giving personal examples and doing extensive research on possible cures. In his new book A Conscientious Life Jeffrey submits a semi-autobiographical account of a young man(Jonathan Stark) and his life struggles including his struggles with having an autistic child(Steven). The author also explores the subjects of religion, politics, love and loss. Here are some reviews of the new book: The book weaves a compelling story line that certainly engaged me. I think the author s imagery is colorful, and capturing. Dr. Darold Treffert, Author and Autism Expert, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin I think the dramatic arc has to do with the main character s honesty, genuine heart and naivety confronting a cruel and unfeeling world and the challenge to incorporate that new sense of realism into his world while still retaining and even deepening the main character s humane way of being in the world and with others around him. The razor s edge of that confrontation would seem to be the foreshadowed and unexpected burden of living with autistic child. Fred Hersom, longtime friend and musician, Concord, California Overall, the book is an excellent read. Since it covers many parts of life, it has a very wide appeal. Those who would enjoy this book would be: those who are very politically active or spend their time keeping informed, those who have had trouble relating to their parents, those who have felt any uncertainty in their lives, those who have had to deal with the grief of their parent s deaths, and finally, those who are the parent of a child with autism. James Williams, autism writer and nationally-known speaker, Chicago, Illinois It has such a powerful voice.most people would love to be able to write a book with your talents. Maeve Quinn, former Sheboygan School Board member and community leader The author shows a tremendous ability to capture the human condition. His work takes us from early stages in life through college years and the loss of a close family member, and beyond. We can all relate to this. His search for the central characters identity reminds us of our own adolescent phase in life, and how we work through it. In sum, this book does an excellent job of capturing that which we all know. The title does the book justice: It truly is A Conscientious Life. Michael J. Tollifson Singer/Songwriter, Sheperdstown, West Virginia. Seller Inventory # AAV9781462053988

About this Item: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln s Contemporaries: William D. About this Item: Liberty Fund Inc, United States, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. In the fall of 2002, Liberty Fund published noted historian Bernhard Knollenberg s Origin of the American Revolution. Now Liberty Fund proudly announces the publication of the second volume of Knollenberg s masterwork on the American Revolution. Knollenberg describes Growth of the American Revolution as . . . an Account of the Change in the Minds and Hearts of a Majority of the People of the Thirteen Colonies Who Rebelled against Great Britain in 1775, together with a description of the Provocative Conduct of the British Parliament and Government Accounting for this Change and the Colonists Responses to the said Conduct. Continuing the work Knollenberg began in the first book, Growth of the American Revolution covers the period from the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766 to the outbreak of hostilities at Lexington and Concord in 1775. Taken together, these volumes present a cogent and authoritative history from an objective and scholarly point of view. Bernhard Knollenberg practiced law for twenty-two years in New York City before leaving to direct the Yale University Library in 1938. He was the senior deputy administrator of the United States Lend-Lease Administration in Washington, D.C., and later a Division Deputy in the O.S.S., during World War II. Thereafter, he dedicated his time to historical research and writing about the American Revolution. He is also the author of Washington and the Revolution; Pioneering Sketches of the Upper Whitewater Valley: Quaker Stronghold of the West; and Franklin, Jonathan Williams, and William Pitt. Bernhard Knollenberg died in 1973. Bernard W. Sheehan is Professor emeritus of history at Indiana University and past editor of the Indiana Magazine of History. Seller Inventory # AAG9780865974166
