About this Item: Guiness Superlatives Limited, London, 1973. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Mike Roffe (illustrator). First Edition. 288pp. Colour frontispiece, black and white and color photographs, black and white and color illustrations, appendices, bibliography, index. A comparison between this and the first edition, written by F. K. Mason and M. C. Windrow reveals the sheer pace of modern development in aviation over the space of a few years. This second edition has been completely reset and the text updated and provided with new illustrations and artwork. It retraces in detail the development and exploration of flight in, through and beyond the earth's atmosphere. The story progresses from the ancient Egyptians, through to the first ascent of a hot air balloon in Portugal in clog and finally to the development of hypersonic flight and man's six landings on the moon and skylab. It portrays the men and their craft in sport and competition, commercial aviation and, perhaps more dramatically, in military and maritime flying, both in peace and in war. The book is written by the topmost experts in this field and is entirely re-illustrated with over 200 photographs and maps. There are also i6 pages of full colour. It is designed to provide both the scholar, enthusiast and the general reader with up-to-the minute information and a uniquely fresh approach to man's newest, fastest and most vital mode of transport. Size: small 4to. Seller Inventory # 140761

About this Item: David & Charles, Newton Abbot London, 1982. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. All locations list dual publishers: David & Charles, London, and Barnes & Noble Books, Totowa, N.J. As copyright page states this copy was "printed in Great Britain by Redwood Burn Limited, Trowbridge, Wilts," and as DJ rear flap echoes "Printed in U.K.," and as this came from the estate of a British-born war bride who was known to visit the U.K., we conclude this is the British edition, "first published in 1982 in Great Britain in 1982 by David & Charles, . . . Devon." We thus list British ISBN. This book also carries an American ISBN, that being 0-389-20289-4. Sixty-five film actors profiled, all male, from Richard Attenborough and Stanley Baker through Anton Diffring, John Gielgud, Stanley Holloway, James Mason and Donald Pleasance, to Terry-Thomas and Peter Ustinov. We think of some as leading men, though they presumably graduated from earlier "character" roles. Printed on good quality stock, which shows off to good advantage the large number of decent quality B&W stills, many of them of 5 X 6-1/2 inches. Handsome DJ front panel features seven full-color photographic portraits, including Malcolm McDowell, Laurence Harvey, and Laurence Olivier, the last apparently costumed as Lord Nelson. No price pre-printed on DJ front flap, though there are the vestigial remains of a price sticker to flap bottom. Author T. Pettigrew started out writing for "The Avengers." 208 pp. including index. Reduced from $40. Seller Inventory # 001345

About this Item: Ashgate Publishing Limited, UK. Hardcover. Condition: New. First Edition. Available Now. Book Description: The starting point of this volume is the scathing attack, far-reaching in its consequences, launched in 1942 by J.C. van Leur on the views then current on the character and significance of the 18th century as a category in Asian history. His denial of European pre-eminence in Asian waters represented a direct attack on colonial historiography. The essays here derive from an international conference held 50 years later, to assess the impact of van Leur's work. In part historiographic, in part drawing on new research, they aim to delimit the boundaries of European-Asian interaction, and to provide case studies of what this period actually meant for the history of South and East Aia. : Review: '.a fascinating and wide-ranging tour d'horizon of recent Asian historiography struggling with the issue of eighteenth-century change.' Journal of Asian Studies, Vol. 58, No. 4 '. reflective overviews by experienced historians.' Journal of World History 'This excellent and well-connected collection of essays is well worth the purchase of the volume and belongs on any historian's bookshelf. it is hoped that university libraries and other institutions will add this book to their collections.'
