About this Item: Still Pictures Moving Words Ltd, UK, 2008. Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Available Now. Book Description: July 20, 1969. As Neil Armstrong takes man's first steps on the moon, Mark Edwards is lost in a lunar landscape on the edge of the Sahara desert. He is rescued by a Tuareg nomad, who takes him to his people, makes a fire and produces a cassette player. Bob Dylan sings A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. As Dylan piles image upon image, the idea comes to Edwards of illustrating each line of the song. In the years that follow, he travels to over 150 countries to photograph our headlong collision with nature. Hard Rain is the result - an unforgettable collection of photographs illustrating Dylan's prophetic lyric. : Images from Edwards' personal archive, plus contributions by Sebastião Salgado, Chris Steele-Perkins and others, combine with the words of rock music's great, poetic writer to form the centrepiece of Hard Rain. : The book and touring exhibition will inspire readers to participate in the debate about how we can best address the pressing issues of climate change, habitat loss, and poverty. : This revised, expanded edition includes essays by Robert May, John Elkington & Geoff Lye, Jonathon Porritt and David Bohm, and over 50 new photographs. : A masterpiece that summons up the ghosts of our past and a vision of a future that is ours to change.: Tim Smit, Chief Executive and co-founder, The Eden Project : We need to give a damn, and here we can see, if we take a few minutes, why we should. This is the power of art.: Colin Tudge : Your book is a piece of sustained beauty. I treasure it.: Arundhati Roy : Review: So why is Hard Rain so stunning and so moving, and why does it feel so right? Part of the answer, of course, lies in the quality of the visual images. But the thematic bundling of these images with Dylan's song could still seem gauche or exploitative were it not for two factors. The most important of these is the sheer brilliance of the dialogue Edwards has created between the words and the images, the way they synthesise into some third form that combines the stillness of a picture with the urgency of a ballad. Edwards's conjunctions are so carefully and thoughtfully constructed that they enforce on the viewer a kind of tact that wards off mere voyeurism. -- Fintan O'Toole, Irish Times, 10 May 2008 : From the Publisher: The Hard Rain exhibition, first launched at the Eden Project in Cornwall in May 2006, has been displayed at over 30 venues in principal cities around the world, and been seen by over 10 million people. : Recent venues include the UN Building in New York, the botanical gardens of Tasmania, Cape Town and Dublin, Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh and Chester Zoo. Size: 23.4 x 22.4 x 1.6 cm. 184 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Art & Design; ISBN: 1905588011. ISBN/EAN: 9781905588015. Inventory No: B205-1049. Seller Inventory # B205-1049

Nordby is too well known in his section of Whatcom county to need formal introduction to the readers of this work. Eminently a self-made man, hone stly earning every dollar in his possession, he ranks with the most enterprising and successful of his compeers and has won a name and reputation which place him among the leading citizens of his community. Mr. Nordby was born in Norway on the 27th day of January, 1867, and is a son of Evan and Maren (Guldbrasen) Nordby, who were born and reared in Norway. The family came to the United States in 1883, settling at Park River, North Dakota, where the father homesteaded one hundred and sixty acre s of land and also preempted a like amount, and to the cultivation of this land he devoted the remainder of his active life, his death occurring there about 1909. The mother died in 1895. On his arrival in North Dakota , [J E Nordby] rented a ranch, to the operation of which he devoted his time until 1887, when he went to the Big Bend, Washington, where in the spring of 1888, he homesteaded one hundred and sixty acres and bought eighty acres more. He planted this land to wheat until 1903, when he sold out and went to Douglas county, Washington, where he bought a stock ranch, which he conducted until 1911, when he sold it. He then came to Whatcom county and bought eighty acres near Ferndale, which he kept about a year and then sold, buyin g eighty five and a half acres two and a half miles northeast of Ferndale. The greater part of the land was cleared, in addition to which he cleared twenty acres more, and he now has about sixty-five acres in cultivation, raising diversified crops, principally hay and grain. He also has a nice two-acre orchard of bearing trees, and keeps twenty-one good grade milk cows of the Holstein breed. He is a wide-awake, energetic farmer, thoroughly understands his business, and is being rewarded with a gratifying measure of prosperity."--from History of Whatcom County, Volume II, by Lottie Roeder Roth, 1926, pages 557-558. ; Nordby later became the director of the Western Sheep Breeding Laboratory of the USDA, and was sent to Cairo, Egypt by the Foreign Agricultural Service ; Herbert Lattig was Dean of the College of Agriculture at Idaho University ; numerous black and white photos ; ex-lib, stamps, label, date due, pocket, else G. That reputation remains today, although copies have become hard to find in recent years, even in secondhand bookstores." ; "215 biographies presented. All of the top fleet and task force commanders, naval strategists, fighters, reformers, inventors, and legendary heroes in American naval history are covered, from the revolutionary John Paul Jones (who made flag rank only in the Russian navy) to the dynamic though controversial Hyman G. Rickover. Along with photographs or portraits, every entry highlights the dynamic careers of leaders selected from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Maritime Service, Confederate States Navy, and even the Republic of Texas Navy. Each biographical sketch gives the complete service record, including ship and shore billets, as well as personal and academic background, battles fought, and the feats that made the subject famous. With all these details, the book adds up to a remarkably thorough biographical profile of American naval and maritime history. Accompanying the text is an appendix listing all major U.S. and Confederate naval commands and commanders since 1775 and an index of ship names, officers, battles, and campaigns." ; ex-military library, stamps, labels ; biographies include "Pug" Ainsworth, Daniel Ammen, "Count" Austin, Charles Johnson Badger, William Bainbridge, Joshua Barney, John Barry, George Belknap, James Biddle, "Spike" Blandy, Mark Bristol, Richard Byrd, "Uncle Bill" Calhoun, "Mick" Carney, Samuel CArter, Augustus Case, ISaac Chauncey, "Chick" clarey, "Jocko" Clark, Robert Coontz, Stephen Decatur, Jr, George Dewey, "Donc" Donaho, Samuel DuPont, Calvin Durgin, Edward Eberle, "Fighting Bob" Evans, David Farragut, Bradley Fiske, Frank Fletcher, Andrew Foote, Albert Gleaves, Louis Goldsborough, Caspar Goodrich, "Bull" Halsey, Esek Hopkins, Duncan Ingraham, Jacob Jones, John Paul Jones, James Jouett, William Kimball, Charles joy, Husband Kimmel, Thomas Kinkaid, Alan Kirk, Austin Knight, "Jerry" Land, William Leahy, Samuel Phillips Lee, Willis Lee, Uriah Levy, Stephen Bleecker Luce, William Lynch, THomas Macdonough, Alfred Mahan, Henry Mayo, "Slew" McCain, "Junior" McCain, Bowman McCalla, "Soc" McMorris, Richard McNulty, "Tip" Stanton, "Pete" Mitscher, "Billy" Moffett, Alfred Montgomery, John Berrien Montgomery, Frederick Moosbrugger, Ben Moreell, Samuel Eliot Morison, Charles Morris, Morton Mumma, Albert Niblack, Chester Nimitz, Ralph Ofstie, Ricahrd O'Kane, Foxhall Parker, Daniel Patterson, Matthew Perry, Robert PEary, Oliver Hazard Perry, David Porter, William Pratt, John Dale Price, Alfred Pride, "Red" Raborn, Lawson Ramage, DeWitt Ramsey, George Read, "Bull" Reeves, Hyman Rickover, "Joe" Richardson, Christopher Rodgers, John Rodgers, Hugh Rodman, Charles Rosendahl, Stephen Clegg Rowan, William Sampson, Winfield Schley, Norman Scott, Thomas Selfridge, Raphael Semmes, Ulysses Sharp, Alan Shepard, Forrest Sherman, Frederick Sherman, William Shubrick, Robert Shufeldt, Charles Sigsbee, William Sowden Sims, John Sloat, Roalnd Smoot, "Ziggy" Sprague, Thomas Lamison Sprague, Raymond Spruance, William Standley, Harold Stark, Charles "Old Ironsides" Stewart, Yates Stirling, Robert Field Stockton, Arthur Struble, Felix Stump, Josiah Tattnall, Joseph Taussig, David Taylor, Henry Clay Taylor, John Thach, John Towers, Charles Triebel, Thomas Truxtun, "Handsome Jack" Tucker, Richmond Kelly Turner, Stansfield Turner, "Abe" Vosseller, Russell Waesche, "Fighting Dick" Wainwright, Henry Walke, "Bub" Ward, Abraham Whipple, Reuben Whitaker, Charles Wilkes, "Ping" Wilkinson, Bud Zumwalt; VG/VG.
