About this Item: ReInk Books, 2017. SoftCover. Condition: New. Reprinted from 1562 edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. About this Item: Brixiae : [Damiano Turlino] : apud Ioannem Baptistam Bozolae, 1562. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 4to (195 x 135 mm), 20th century pasteboard with a leaf of a 16th century book, well preserved copy. Small woodcut device on title, cursive type, large woodcut printer’s device at the end, within a woodcut border (nearly half-page), ff. 7, [1] device, blank at verso. First edition of this speech held during the sessions of the Council of Trent. The celebrated Portuguese theologian Diego Andrada de PayvaorDiogo de Paiva de Andrada(26 July 1528– 1 December 1575) was born atCoimbra, the son of the grand treasurer ofJoão III. Although his interests originally lay in foreign mission, after finishing his course at the University of Coimbra, he was ordained to the priesthood, and remained in Coimbra as professor of theology. So great was his reputation thatKing Sebastian of Portugalappointed him theologian at theCouncil of Trent in 1561. There, his work in defence of papal authority earned him the thanks of the Pope, while at the council he wrote his "Decem libri orthodoxarum explicationum" (Venice, 1564, 1594;Cologne, 1564, 1574) against the work ofMartin Chemnitz’s "Theologiae Jesuitarum praecipua capita". In this book he discusses and defines the chief points of doctrine attacked by the heretics. Chemnitz responded with his "Examen Concilii Tridentini", prompting possibly Andrada’s best work, "Defensio Tridentinae fidei Cath." (Lisbon, 1578 and 1595). Between 1562 and 1567, Andrada published many controversial tracts, especially against Chemnitz. He wrote on the origins of the Jesuits, papal authority, and the conclusions of Trent (hisDefensio Tridentinae Fidei, published posthumously in 1578 (remarkable for its learned statement of various opinions regarding theImmaculate Conception), and three sets of his sermons inPortuguese. He published also three volumes of sermons inPortuguese. Andrada is important not only in his grasp of theological questions, but also in the clarity of his apologetics. It was only his death, in Lisbon at the early age of 47, which prevented the completion of his great "Defensio Tridentinae fidei"; he had reached as far as the fifth session of the Council, where his exposition of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is notable for his expert marshaling of an impressive array of authorities. Clean and crisp. xxxii, 735 pp.; viii, 614 pp. *** Fourth edition. Fr. Thomé de Jesus accompanied D. Sebastião to Africa and was captured at Alcacer Kebir; he died in prison in 1582, having written this work (by the light filtering through the cell door) to console himself and his fellow captives. The first edition of the Trabalhos, published posthumously in Lisbon, 1601-1609, is very rare. It was translated into Spanish, English, French and Italian.Bell describes the Trabalhos at length: "Rarely, if ever, has such glow and fervour been set in print . . . The prose wrestles and throbs in an agony of grief or rapture, of mysticism carried to the extreme limit where all power of articulate expression ends. Frei Thomé de Jesus is a master of Portuguese prose not by any arts or graces but through the white heat of his intensity" (p. 240).Fr. Thomé de Jesus came from a literary family: his brothers were the celebrated preacher Diogo de Paiva de Andrade and the historian Francisco de Andrade.*** Innocêncio VII, 359; XIX, 283: without collation.
