Target Tokyo is a scrupulously documented account of espionage on a grand scale. Bristling with suspense, it details the undercover operations of one of the most ingenious spy rings of the century. Headed by Richard Sorge, it transmitted highly secret information from Tokyo to Russia between 1933 and 1941~an astounding feat in an increasingly xenophobic, militaristic, and security~conscious Japan. Gordon Prange brings to life the members of the ring, the double agents, the victims and dupes, the diplomats and statesmen. Born in Russia and educated in Germany, Sorge posed as a good Nazi, a stringer for a German newspaper. He secured his access to intelligence information by getting a position at the German embassy in Tokyo, where he became the trusted adviser and friend of the German ambassador, who consulted him about the most sensitive matters. Sorge also infiltrated the highest levels of Japanese society. He was charming and flamboyant, a hard drinker who could often be seen riding about Tokyo on his motorcycle. But when he wasn't playing the colorful character, he was busy collecting intelligence. Sorge warned Stalin that Hitler would invade the Soviet Union one month before it happened; why Stalin did not believe him is only one of the mysteries explored in this book. A major work of World War II history, Target Tokyo is a portrait of an exotic nation gearing up for war. It is also a study of duplicity on the highest levels, of betrayals both personal and national, with insights into the great leaders of the era~Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt~as they played out the drama that would deter mine the future of the world. Excavations at many important sites have enabled scholars to recover the most important ancient civilizations of mankind. 'While these have importance in their own right, public interest in this area and its history has always been especially strong because of its close association with the Bible. Much of the new material, however, remains inaccessible to the general reader. But between the extremes of the scholar's scholar trapped in his own specialized language, and the professional popularizer who cannot control his sources of information or distinguish fantasy from fact, there is happily an occasional writer whose work is both scholarly and readable. The journal The Biblical Archaeologist has been successful in discovering such scholar~authors, and some of the most important of their work has been brought together in this volume. The articles selected center in the relationship between biblical and pagan religion in the ancient world. Articles like those on Manna and The Musical Instruments of Israel, on the Flood and on Sodom and Gomorrah, bear closely on the Bible; others, like those on the pagan religions and on the techniques of carbon dating, are indirectly related thereto. All of them are at once authoritative and very readable. There are sixteen pages of illustrations . Contributors = W. F. Albright, The Johns Hopkins University~ F. S. "The life of Sir William Butler, a Tipperary Irishman who served in the British Army for nearly half a century, is one of infinite adventure and variety. During the first Riel Rebellion of 1869 - 70 he acted as intelligence officer to Colonel Wolseley, Commander of the Red River Expenditon. Subsequently, at the request of the Canadian Government. he travelled through the Canadian West in the dead of winter and submitted a report on prevailing conditions that led to the founding of the Norht-West Mounted Police. His experiences on this occasion provided him with material for an immensely popular travel book. "The Great Lone Land". Two years later he made an extraordinary journey into Canada's northland, which he described in detail in "The Wild North Land", a saga of man against the wilderness which, like its predecessor, has become a classic of travel literature. Following his Canadian adventures Butler, fought in the Ashanti and Zulu wars, at Tel-el-Kebir, and on the Nile where he was largely responsible for the direction of the Nile River Flotilla in the futile effort to save General Gordon."
