About this Item: Oxford University Press, New York, 1985. Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Third Edition - Ninth Printing. 852 Pages. Interior txt pages are flawless. With its expanded range of selections and extended historical coverage, this third edition of a highly popular text on film aesthetics features major additions of contemporary topics in film theory-including psychoanalytic, feminist, and Marxist approaches, and new essays on television, horror films, and experimental movie making. This book now includes fifty-three selections, fourteen of them freshly chosen. The section Kinds of Film has been retitled Film Genres and concentrates exclusively on the distinctions within a single type of film: classical Hollywood narrative cinema. The final section, now called Film: Psychology, Society, and Ideology, is substantially revised to take into account film's relationship to its consumers: how films shape or reflect cultural attitudes, reinforce or reject dominant modes of cultural thinking, and stimulate or frustrate people's needs and drives. Throughout the book chapter introductions have been rewritten to reflect today's concerns. Current and comprehensive, the book has been called the best collection available on the disparate comments in the field of film theory and criticism and now is even better. Contents in Seven Parts: Film and Reality, Film Image and Film Language, The Film Medium, Film Theater and Literature, Film Genres, The Film Arts, and Film Psychology Society and Ideology. Size: 5 1/2" X 8 1/4". Seller Inventory # 16109

About this Item: Da Capo Press, New York, 2004. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. viii, 325 pp., illus., biblio., index; 24 cm. Near fine. Tight, clean copy. One corner bumped, else fine. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. "The gangster, like the gunslinger, is a classic American character-and the gangster movie, like the Western, is one of the American cinema's enduring film genres. From Scarface to White Heat, from The Godfather to The Usual Suspects, from Once Upon a Time in America to Road to Perdition, gangland on the screen remains as popular as ever.In Bullets over Hollywood, film scholar John McCarty traces the history of mob flicks and reveals why the films are so beloved by Americans. As McCarty demonstrates, the themes, characters, landscapes, stories-the overall iconography-of the gangster genre have proven resilient enough to be updated, reshaped, and expanded upon to connect with even today's young audiences. Packed with fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes and information about real-life hoods and their cinematic alter egos, insightful analysis, and a solid historical perspective, Bullets over Hollywood will be the definitive book on the gangster movie for years to come. / John McCarty is an adjunct professor of cinema in the Department of Theatre at SUNY, Albany, and the author of more than thirty books, including The Fearmakers, The Sleaze Merchants, and The Films of Mel Gibson. About this Item: Ediz.ETS, Pisa, 2008. br.cop.fig.a col. Condition: NUOVO. Seller Inventory # 150214

About this Item: University Press of Mississippi, Jackson, Mississippi, 2001. Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. 2001 Revised and Expanded. 180 Pages with Title List. Revised and expanded edition. A used book in As New condition with flawless interior text pages. Noir is defined as a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. For a tour of noir cinema this handbook is the perfect companion and Barry Gifford is an ideal guide. His choice selection of films exposes the menacing, moody, and oftentimes violent underbelly of this dark movie genre that occupies a favorite niche in American popular culture. Some are classics, some are little known and seldom seen, but all, once viewed, are deeply remembered by aficionados of noir. Gifford's roll call of unforgettables includes these, and more: The Asphalt Jungle, Body and Soul, Body Heat, Charley Varrick, Chinatown, The Devil Thumbs a Ride, D.O.A., Double Indemnity, High Sierra, Key Largo, Kiss of Death, Mean Streets, Mildred Pierce, Mr. Majestyk, Out of the Past, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Strangers on a Train, White Heat, along with several noir classics from Europe -- Repulsion, The Hidden Room, Shoot the Piano Player, The 400 Blows, Odd Man Out. The author identifies the directors and names the many noir stars, the greats and not-so-greats who were cast in the indelible roles of hoods, B-girls, psychopaths, grifters, gumshoes, waifs, tarts, femme fatales, mobsters, molls, and ex-cons. With a connoisseur's insight and an offbeat sensitivity perfectly tailored to his subjects, Gifford's brief essays cover a hundred of the noir buff's favorites. His highly polished impressions take the reader through five decades of noir to find both the heart and the art of the plotline. Gifford is a poet, novelist, and playwright and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Size: 5" x 8 1/2". Seller Inventory # 18410

"146 pages, thereof 114 text pages, text in English, frontispiece, color plates in the text, drawings in text, in the notes black and white photo panels, Gold embossed back and lids, Contens, List of coloured Illustrations, List of photographic Illustrations Gabriel Pascal (4 June 1894 - 6 July 1954) was a Hungarian film producer and director. A follower of Meher Baba, Pascal was the first film producer to successfully bring the plays of George Bernard Shaw to the screen. His most successful production was Pygmalion, for which Pascal received an Academy Award nomination as its producer. Later adaptations of Shaw plays included Major Barbara (1941) and Caesar and Cleopatra (1945). Pascal was born during June 1894 in Arad, Austria-Hungary (now Romania). Pascal coined his own name and his real name remains unknown. Pascal's early life is shrouded in mystery. He claimed to have been an orphan taken from a burning building as a child and raised first by Gypsies before being taken away to an orphanage. He also claimed that the Gypsies taught him to beg, steal, and do acrobatic tricks.[1] It is unclear what parts of his fabulous account of his childhood are true as there are no formal records of him prior to the age of 17 when he was enlisted in military school in Holí?, Hungary, by a mysterious Jesuit priest. Pascal, who was decidedly unfit for military life, became interested in theatre and studied at the Academy of the Hofburgtheater in Vienna. Later his interest expanded into the newly burgeoning cinema and he made films in Germany and Italy with sporadic success. Becoming teetotal at an early age, he smoked cigars prodigiously, later provoking admonishments from George Bernard Shaw that he would ruin his voice. Pascal had one son, Peter, conceived in Germany during the delirium of a fever with his landlady's sister Elsie. Unable to care even for himself, Pascal fled to the Netherlands. After WWII ended, Pascal returned to Germany to search for his son Peter, but he was listed among the missing Hitler-Jugend. Elsie had been killed by a bomb. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 350. About this Item: Jonathan Cape Ltd., London, 1981. Softcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 1981. 176pp. "Christopher Logue, CBE (23 November 1926 - 2 December 2011) was an English poet associated with the British Poetry Revival and a pacifist. Logue spent over forty years working on his contemporary version of Homer's Iliad. Begun in 1959 the project expanded into five full-length collections, known collectively as War Music. Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Logue was part of a post-war artistic milieu that encompassed friendships with Samuel Beckett and Henry Miller in Paris. As well as his poetry, Logue wrote for the theatre and cinema, including two screenplays one of which, Savage Messiah, was directed by Ken Russell, and he also appeared in front of the camera for the same director as Cardinal Richelieu in The Devils. For many years he contributed to the satirical magazine, Private Eye. The various instalments of War Music have been highly acclaimed, being shortlisted for the 2002 International Griffin Poetry Prize, and winning the Bernard F O'Connor Award from The Paris Review. All Day Permanent Red is the fourth book in the War Music series, but deals with some of the early battle scenes from The Iliad. This non-chronological approach is typical of the freedom Logue allows himself in relation to his source material, changing or omitting episodes and sometimes inventing entirely new scenes. His approach to language is similarly non-literal, mixing traditional imagery with the jarringly modern as in his description of the death of a Greek soldier from an arrow wound that makes "a tunnel the width of a lipstick through Quist's neck". Book has light wear to edges and corners; otherwise in vg+ condition with no inscriptions. Size: 8.5'' Tall. Seller Inventory # PoetLogue001a

About this Item: Skellig Edition, Munchen [Munich], 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (photographs) Alan Greenberg (illustrator). First Edition. [tiny dampstain at base of spine, otherwise a nice clean book with no significant wear; jacket moderately rubbed and edgeworn, a little laminate separation along spine, 3.5-inch diagonal closed tear in rear panel (B&W photographs) A production journal of Werner Herzog's 197_ film of the same name (original German title: HERZ AU GLAZ), with an account of the shooting interwoven with the actual scenario. From Herzog's introductory note: "The text of the scenario goes back to a very stark and beautiful screenplay by Herbert Achternbusch, which is now part of his novel 'Die Stunde des Todes' ('The Hour of Death'; Suhrkamp 1975). I have adapted and expanded his text into the present scenario form. Several scenes included herein were never shot, or were left out during the editing; instead, during the shooting new scenes and characters were added. Nevertheless, I wish to leave the text unchanges to better display the genesis of the film." (He also makes a point of noting that Greenberg's photographs "are reproduced here only in black and white, and the strange beauty of the color originals has been lost.") Although the book was published in Germany, the text is entirely in English. Seller Inventory # 22954

OVERSIZE! No priority/air, except by special arrangement. "Jeff Wall is foremost among the artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. This revised and expanded edition of the definitive monograph on the Canadian artist, first published in 1996, includes a new fully illustrated essay on Wall’s recent work by the French historian of art and photography Jean-François Chevrier, in addition to the artist’s recent writings. Describing himself as ‘a painter of modern life’, Wall produces huge transparencies mounted onto light boxes which diffuse a brilliant glow through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and ‘constructed’ social situations. These images employ the latest technology to create tableaux which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When installed they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures. Wall engages at a sophisticated level with theories of representation both as an artist and as a theoretical writer on contemporary art and culture. Major surveys of his work have been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1995); the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (1995); the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1996), and the Musée d’Art Contemporain, Montreal (1999)." - Publisher.
