About this Item: Ziff-Davis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL, 1970. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good +. Color & b/w Photos & Illustrations (illustrator). Not Indicated. Stereo Review was a magazine first published in 1958 by Ziff-Davis with the title HiFi and Music Review. It was one of a number of magazines then available for the individual interested in high fidelity. Throughout its life it published a blend of record and equipment reviews, articles on music and musicians and articles on technical issues and advice. The name changed to HiFi Review in 1959. It became HiFi/Stereo Review in 1961 to reflect the growing use of stereophonic technology in recordings and broadcasts. In 1968 it became, simply, Stereo Review to show that stereo and hi-fi had come to mean the same thing in the eye of the public. In the late 1980s, the magazine was acquired by Hachette Filipacchi and absorbed the staff of the defunct High Fidelity magazine. During the 1990s, consumer trends began to branch out into home theater matters and the magazine contents followed in kind. Finally, in 1999, the magazine was renamed Stereo Review's Sound & Vision and later simply Sound and Vision to reflect how dominant home theater had become in consumer purchases. One of the key features of the magazine was the permanence of its staff. Some staffers stayed for decades. One of them, a woman, rose from the ranks to become the magazine's editor from the late 1980s into the '90s. Another, Julian Hirsch, was known for his technical reviews of equipment; he was involved with the magazine from 1961 until his retirement in 1998, nearly 40 years. Seller Inventory # 033748

About this Item: The School of Universal Philosophy and Healing, London, 1968. First Edition. Original newspaper-type publication. Folio - 15 inches x 10 inches. 16pp. Printed on coated magazine-type paper stock. Black and white illustrations. The "Occult Gazette" was edited, and largely written, by the outspoken British Spiritualist medium Gladys Spearman-Cook (1900 - 1984). Spearman-Cook founded a Spiritualist organization, "The School of Universal Philosophy and Healing" in 1946, although it does not seem to have gathered momentum until the mid-1950s. She began publishing this journal in 1960. Spearman-Cook claimed to receive instructions from her spirit guide "Ra-Men-Ra" who relayed communications from various higher entities including "The Lord of the Scorpio Hierarchy, the Great Eagle" which she relayed in "The Occult Gazette." The journal covers a wide variety of metaphysical topics, from chanelling and mediumship, to the coming of "the Aquarian Christos" to discourses on aliens and UFOs. Otherwise the subject matter of the paper was reasonably typical of occult magazines, exploring topics such as Egyptian mysteries, grail, astrology, herbalism, mysticism, healing, etc. along with advertisements, letters to the editor, etc. Spearman-Cook (in her role as amanuensis to "Ra-Men-Ra") was no stranger to controversy, and appeared on radio and in newspapers (such as "The News of the World") making claims about the failures of science (in particular the interpretation of the results of space exploration), and making various arcane pronouncements, such as declaring a new calendar (based on the birth date of her current incarnation), prophesying various events, etc. etc. Some light wear and creasing, but is still in VG + condition. About this Item: University Press of Mississippi, United States, 2018. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Contributions by Howard Ball, Peter Edelman, Aram Goudsouzian, Robert E. Luckett Jr., Ellen B. Meacham, Stanley Nelson, and Charles L. OverbyA Past That Won't Rest: Images of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi collects never-before-published photographs taken by Jim Lucas (1944-1980), an exceptional documentary photographer. His black-and-white images, taken during 1964 through 1968, depict events from the civil rights movement including the search for the missing civil rights workers in Neshoba County, the Meredith March Against Fear, Senator Robert F. Kennedy's visit to the Mississippi Delta, and more. The photographs exemplify Lucas's technical skill and reveal the essential truth in his subjects and the circumstances surrounding them.Lucas had a gift for telling a visual story, an instinctive eye for framing his shots, and a keen human sensibility as a photojournalist. A college student in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1964, he was on his way to becoming a professional photojournalist when Freedom Summer exploded. Lucas found himself in the middle of events that would command the attention of the whole world. He cultivated his contacts and honed his craft behind the camera as a stringer for Time and Life magazines as well as the Associated Press. Lucas tragically lost his life in a car accident in 1980, but his photographs have survived and preserve a powerful visual legacy for Mississippi. Over one hundred gorgeously sharp photographs are paired with definitive essays by scholars of the events depicted, thereby adding insight and historical context to the book. Charles L. Overby, a fellow Jacksonian and young journalist at the time, provides a foreword about growing up in that tumultuous era. Seller Inventory # ABZ9781496816511

About this Item: Taschen April 2015, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. The world through Linda's eyes: A retrospective of Linda McCartney's life and photography In 1966, during a brief stint as a receptionist for Town and Country magazine, Linda Eastman snagged a press pass to a very exclusive promotional event for the Rolling Stones aboard a yacht on the Hudson River. With her fresh, candid photographs of the band, far superior to the formal shots made by the band's official photographer, Linda secured her name as a rock 'n' roll photographer. Two years later, in May 1968, she entered the record books as the first female photographer to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone with her portrait of Eric Clapton. She went on to capture many of rock's most important musicians on film, including Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors, and the Grateful Dead. In 1967, Linda went to London to document the 'Swinging Sixties,' where she met Paul McCartney at the Bag 'O Nails club and subsequently photographed The Beatles during a launch event for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Paul and Linda fell in love, and were married on March 12, 1969. For the next three decades, until her untimely death, she devoted herself to her family, vegetarianism, animal rights, and photography. From her early rock 'n' roll portraits, through the final years of The Beatles, to raising four children with Paul, Linda captured her whole world on film. Her shots range from spontaneous family pictures to studio sessions with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, as well as encounters with artists Willem de Kooning and Gilbert and George. Always unassuming and fresh, her work displays a warmth and feeling for the precise moment that captures the essence of any subject. Whether photographing her children, celebrities, animals, or a fleeting moment of everyday life, she did so without pretension or artifice. This retrospective volume is a lasting and deeply personal testament to Linda's talent, produced in close collaboration with the McCartney family, with forewords by Paul, Stella, and Mary McCartney. Text in English, French, and German. Seller Inventory # 240637

About this Item: Dutton, New York, 1998. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xvi, 288 pages. Illustrations. Introduction by Bruce Ackerman. Foreword by Mayor Ron Kirk. Bookplate signed by Hankins on half-title page. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Derived from a Kirkus review: A detailed memoir by the young African-American fashion designer responsible for a very successful line of women's wear who in only a few years went from a job in the quality assurance department at J.C. Penny to heading his own clothing company, with annual revenues in excess of $40 million. Hankins, one of seven children raised by an indomitable single mother in Elizabeth, N.J., demonstrated a talent for fashion at an early age--he made a dress for his mother to wear to a wedding when he was seven. His memoir (coauthored by People magazine correspondent Markley) stresses the importance of the teachers in grade and high school who encouraged him, as well as that of the many figures in the fashion industry who helped him along. The story is a good one. Anthony Mark Hankins (born November 10, 1968) is an American fashion designer who founded Anthony Mark Hankins Inc. in 1994. By his mid-twenties he had built his own $40 million business[1] and was named by Newsweek as one of the top 100 people to watch in America. As a student, Anthony Mark Hankins apprenticed with Yves Saint Laurent in Paris (1988-1990). Later, he also apprenticed for Adrienne Vittadini, Willi Smith (1986), Michael Paris, and Homer Layne (1987). During that time it was at an interview with Bob Mackie, an Emmy winning designer for shows like Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which pointed him towards the ready-to-wear mass market. Returning to the United States in 1992, Anthony Mark Hankins began working at JCPenney Corporation as the Quality Assurance Manager. In this role he utilized his skills and eye for fashion to drive his career forward. Within eight weeks he had been promoted to become the first and only in-house designer in the Minority Supplier Development Division at JCPenney's corporate headquarters in Dallas. Anthony left JCPenney in 1994 when he founded Ramone Moya Ltd. which was the umbrella company for the AMH Group and Anthony Mark Hankins Inc. JCPenney agreed to carry his initial line. The first article about the company ran in the July 2, 1994 issue of the Dallas Morning News headlined "Breaking Out of the Pattern" written by Maria Halkias. Once his exclusivity with JCPenney expired he also marketed to Target with his line called "Authentics" and Kmart with "Anjalise." His ready to wear collections were also featured in Nordstrom and Sears. By 1996 he had revenues of $40 million in annual sales. All of Anthony's designs are created in the United States. He has had success selling worldwide in PX stores for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). He was next approached by Black Entertainment Television to do a home-shopping program called BET Shop which had a direct connection to the Home Shopping Network. On March 31, 1996 he had his first appearance on HSN. He is now in his seventeenth year as a designer on the Home Shopping Network for ready-wear-fashions. Seller Inventory # 74250

Céline Marie Claudette Dion, CC OQ ChLD ( born 30 March 1968) is a Canadian singer and businesswoman. Dion emerged as a teen star in the French-speaking world after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. Dion first gained international recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest where she represented Switzerland. Following a series of French albums during the 1980s, she signed on to Epic Records in the United States. In 1990, Dion released her debut English-language album, Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she achieved worldwide fame after releasing several English albums along with additional French albums. Her albums, Falling into You (1996) and Let's Talk About Love (1997), were both certified diamond in the US while D'eux (1995) became the best-selling French-language album of all time. She also scored a series of international number-one hits, including "Nothing Broken but My Heart", "The Power of Love", "Think Twice", "Because You Loved Me", "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", "My Heart Will Go On", and "I'm Your Angel." About this Item: Museum of Art; Rhode Island School of Design, 1968. Condition: Gut. (Ausstellung).. Ca. 60 S.; viele Abbildungen; 8°; kart. Gutes Ex.; Einband gering berieben. - Englisch. // THIS exhibition of the Jazz Age in Caricature is the work of Richard Merkin, a contemporary painter whose knowledge of the 1920's and 1930's is almost encyclopedic. Museum visitors should know that to a large extent, painters, not critics or historians, really determine the fashions of scholarship in art history and exhibitions in museums. Artists perform this curious sub-function by conditioning the eyes of critics to the fascinations of some period in the past which suddenly seems manifest in the present. The process is very complex, of course, but in Merkin's case tantalizing obvious. In Rhode Island we know Merkin and his art very well, and with this exhibition, we shall know both better. But the purpose of the Jazz Age is not that; rather, it is to present the exhilarating and once enormously popular work of a period with the realization that the relationship between popular illustration and Fine Art works two ways. This exhibition owes something to Carl Wein-hardt of the John Herron Museum of Art, of Indianapolis, who last year organized an important retrospective of the work of John Held, Jr. It also owes a great deal to Miss Elizabeth L. Broad, curatorial assistant, Museum of Art, Rhode Island Scho.ol of Design, who coordinated the exhibition at every stage. I would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Marvin Garner and Mr. Benedict Goldsmith of the State University of New York, College at Potsdam, New York, with the Museum of Art, co-organizers of the show. DANIEL ROBBINS (Vorwort) // (José) Miguel Covarrubias (* 22. November 1904 in Mexiko-Stadt; † 4. Februar 1957 ebenda), auch genannt „El Chamaco" (span. für „Der Junge"), war ein mexikanischer Maler, Karikaturist, Ethnologe und Kunsthistoriker. // Ralph Barton (August 14, 1891 – May 19, 1931) was an American artist best known for his cartoons and caricatures of actors and other celebrities. Though his work was heavily in demand through the 1920s and is often considered to epitomize the era, his personal life was troubled by mental illness, and he was nearly forgotten soon after his suicide, shortly before his fortieth birthday. // John Held Jr. (January 10, 1889 – March 2, 1958) was an American cartoonist, printmaker, and illustrator. One of the best-known magazine illustrators of the 1920s, Held created cheerful art showing his characters dancing, motoring and engaging in fun-filled activities. The drawings depicted the flapper era in a way that both satirized and influenced the styles and mores of the time, and his images have continued to define the jazz age for subsequent generations. He also produced linocuts that depicted a Victorian era that was dark with violence and abuse. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550. Seller Inventory # 1059103
