The process of globalisation has been affecting the Indian society in various ways. Though it is primarily an economic phenomenon, its impact in other walks of life is being strongly felt and there seems no possibility of its disappearance. Taking the northwest region of India as the focus of analysis, this volume brings together sixteen contributions made by the scholars working in this area to focus on four issues, namely, identity formation, development, gender and the diaspora. Within the large perspective of each aspect that has been examined, various issues and controversies have been provided scholarly treatment. In the backdrop of the fact that globalisation is here to stay, the issue of how to handle it so as to benefit from its positive aspects is a normative one that requires certain policy measures. In the process, the political economy of development and the role of the state have remained the major focus of investigation. The transnationalisation of the Indians has gained recognition in the light of the recent announcement by the Prime Minister that the government was taking into consideration the issue of granting dual citizenship to diasporic Indians. The growth in the studies on the Indian diaspora has also lent credence to the view that diaspora communities are important components of the globalisation process. 302 pp. Seller Inventory # 50089

About this Item: Serials Publications, 2006. Hardcover. Condition: New. The state and pace of India?s development show many troubling sings. In the 1990s, there was a dream, which seems to be tantalizingly within reach?the dream of becoming a fast growing economy, so that poverty could be wiped out. However, this dreams remains elusive. The excitement and optimism generated by the economic reforms have abated. The ability of policy makers to obtain radical changes greatly diminished and the progress of reforms have been blocked. Industrial growth has decelerated. Export growth fell. Infrastructure bottlenecks persist. Poverty, illiteracy and ill-health still remain major problems. The political instability has not provided atmosphere conducive to domestic and foreign investment. However, there are many positive signs. The rate of economic growth is quite significant. The performance of agriculture is remarkable. Inflation is well under control for most of the years. Exports are keeping up. The financial sector reforms have resulted in radical institutional development in securities markets. The level of food security has improved. There is remarkable success in information technology. Overall, there are dramatic changes in India?s economic development. With this backdrop, it is intended to look into Indian development experiences covering macroeconomic aspects; regional perspectives, state specific analysis and micro level studies, and twenty-two papers are included in this volume. The overall importance of agriculture in the country makes it necessary to improve the feudal relations state of agricultural indebtedness labour wage dualism in agriculture and industry old farming techniques fluctuations and instability in crop output and a consolidated overall agricultural policy for the whole country. As regards industrial sector it received special importance during the plan period. Different plans laid importance to various types of industries and the plan targets and objectives for industrial development also differed. In spite of all this industrial growth there have been problems in this sector like gaps between targets and achievements under capacity utilization poor performance of public sector regional imbalance industrial sickness labour problems etc. which need to be probed and sorted out. About this Item: Serials, New Delhi, 2008. Hardbound. Condition: As New. New. Contents Acknowledgement. 1. Background of the study. 2. Industrial training facilities in J&K. 3. Impact of training courses and track record of placement of trainees. 4. Demand assessment of industries. 5. Demand assessment of prospective trainees. 6. Conclusions and recommendations. Bibliography. The contribution of technically trained manpower to the economic growth and development is a well accepted factor. The shortage of personnel with an education in industrial training will have an adverse impact on the Jammu and Kashmir economy especially in the industrial sector. In order to attain industrial and technological self reliance the planners envisaged the development and building up of indigenous expertise and stock of technically trained manpower as an inalienable part of the state's development strategy. As a sequel to this policy a tremendous effort was made by the Government to create a massive infrastructure to train and built up locally groomed expertise and skilled manpower. The Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are one of the major institutions that provide technically trained manpower in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. However the over production of technically trained manpower with less regard to the absorption capacity of the labour market will result in unemployment among these skilled labour force. In view of rapidly changing social economic political and technological scenario the technically trained manpower requirements also change which demands for constant monitoring of manpower requirements. Therefore the assessment of the impact of training courses in the ITIs and evaluation of the track record of the placement of the trainees is essential for the relevant authorities to identify gaps between the demand and supply of the technically trained personnel as well as to take suitable action in advance. 226 pp. Seller Inventory # 70404

Economic liberalization and institutional reforms in rural credit through through SHGs in West Bengal/Debnarayan Sarker and Sudipta De. Liberalization and globalization are both part of the economic reform undertaken by numerous countries including India in the recent past to give a new shape to their economies. Liberalization is the diminution of progressive elimination of the control of the state over economic policies. Purely internal liberalization confines its attention to the domestic and takes measures to make it more responsive to market forces. External liberalization on the other hand consists of relaxation of the state control in the spheres of foreign trade foreign investment and capital inflow and outflow in a country. On the other hand globalization fostered by free flow of information and rapid technology is a deriving force that no country can turn back. It does impose market discipline on the participants which can be harsh but is the mechanism that derives progress and prosperity. Globalization is an ongoing process of international integration as a result of unprecedented acceleration in the flow of trade assets technology knowledge information and ideas across national boundaries. With this backdrop it is intended to look into the twin phenomena of liberalization and globalization to gain a better understanding of their nature and consequences and fifteen scholarly papers are included in this volume. 269 pp. Seller Inventory # 54886

In the 1990s there was a dream which seems to be tantalizingly within reach the dream of becoming a fast growing economy so that poverty could be wiped out. However this dreams remains elusive. The excitement and optimism generated by the economic reforms have abated. The ability of policy makers to obtain radical changes greatly diminished and the progress of reforms have been blocked. Industrial growth has decelerated. Export growth fell. Infrastructure bottlenecks persist. Poverty illiteracy and ill health still remain major problems. The political instability has not provided atmosphere conductive to domestic and foreign investment. However there are many positive signs. The rate of economic growth is quite significant. The performance of agriculture is remarkable. Inflation is well under control for most of the years. Exports are keeping up. The financial sector reforms have resulted in radical institutional development in securities markets. The level of food security has improved. There is remarkable success in information technology. Overall there are dramatic changes in India's economic development. With this backdrop it is intended to look into Indian development experiences covering macroeconomic aspects regional perspectives state specific analysis and micro level studies and twenty two papers are included in this volume. 308 pp. Seller Inventory # 60414
