XX [From the Encyclopedia of World Biography]: American writer Katherine Anne Porter, winner of a Pulitzer Prize in 1966, was known for her delicate observations and precise descriptions. She was born on May 15, 1890, in Indian Creek, Texas, the fourth of five children of Harrison Boone Porter and Mary Alice Jones. She was a descendant of Jonathan Boone, brother of the famous explorer Daniel Boone (1734¿1820), and her father, a farmer, was a second cousin of the writer O. Henry (Sidney Porter) (1862 - 1910). After her mother died in 1892, Porter and her siblings went to live with their grandmother. After her grandmother died in 1901, Porter was sent to several convent schools in Texas and Louisiana. In 1906 Porter ran away from school and got married; she was divorced three years later. In 1914 she went to Chicago, Illinois, to pursue an acting career. She returned to Texas later that year and worked briefly as a singer. From early childhood Porter had been writing stories, an activity she described as the passion of her life. In 1917 she joined the staff of the Critic, a Fort Worth, Texas, weekly newspaper, and in 1918 and 1919 she worked for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado, writing mostly book reviews and political articles. She then moved to New York City, where she continued to write. During the 1920s she traveled often to Mexico, wrote articles about the country, and studied art. Porter's first volume of stories, Flowering Judas (1930), impressed critics, although it did not sell very well. It won a Guggenheim fellowship that allowed her to study abroad, and after a brief stay in Mexico she sailed in 1932 to Bremerhaven, Germany (which provided the setting for her only novel, Ship of Fools ). A second volume of stories, Hacienda (1934), and a short novel, Noon Wine (1937), followed her marriage in 1933 to Eugene Pressly, a member of the U.S. Foreign Service in Paris, France. After divorcing Pressly, she married Albert Russell Erskine Jr., whom she divorced in 1942. Pale Horse, Pale Rider (1942) consists of three short novels, including Noon Wine. The title work is a bitter, tragic tale of a young woman's love for a soldier who dies of influenza (the flu). The title story of The Leaning Tower and Other Stories (1944), set in Berlin, Germany, deals with the menace of Nazism. The Days Before (1952) is a collection of essays. Ship of Fools (1962) was a best seller but drew mixed reviews. Based on Sebastian Brant's (c. 1458¿1521) fifteenth-century novel Das Narrenschiff, it examines the lives of an international group of voyagers, whose human folly alters their personal lives and blinds them to the growth of Nazism. In Texas, her childhood home in Kyle was turned into a museum. Katherine Anne Porter died on September 18, 1980, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her ashes were buried at Indian Creek beside her mother's grave. However, her writing continued to live on. The Letters of Katherine Anne Porter were published after her death. About this Item: Doubleday, 1942. hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Dustjacket. Garden City. 1942. Doubleday. 2nd Printing. Very Good. No Dustjacket. Translated from the Spanish by Katherine Anne Porter. 290 pages. hardcover. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizardi was born in Mexico City in 1771 of poor middle class parents and educated at the college of San Ildefonso and the University of Mexico, where he studied philosophy and theology. Never distinguished as a scholar, he became one of the most important men of his age, albeit he spent a thoroughly misguided and miserable life, in perpetual rebellion against the society of his own time and the social evils of all time. Imbued with the spirit of the French Encyclopedists, he was a constantly thwarted but undefeated fighter for Mexican Independence, social reform, and the freedom of all mankind. His life and character are marked by the most human frailty, and by a moral courage unsurpassed by any man who ever lived. His writings were systematically suppressed by church and state; the politicians he supported betrayed him; he had to publish his greatest work, El Periquillo Sarniento, surreptitiously, in pamphlet form under the pseudonym of The Mexican Thinker. After a life of persecution, of struggle against censorship, excommunication, imprisonment, of futile battles against poverty and disease; of the worse strategic b1unders, the most ill-advised attacks and retreats, he lived to be cheered by own people and damned by their rulers, and to die in neglect. His memory passed for a time from men’s minds; there is no trace of his grave, no monument to mark his greatness; but his book has become the most beloved classic of Latin America, and he is remembered as a great hero in the American struggle for freedom and – in the words of his translator – ‘the singular glory of Mexican literature.’ Katherine Anne Porter’s introduction to THE ITCHING PARROT gives a magnificent account of his unique and admirable life, and a superb estimate of his greatest work. KATHERINE ANNE PORTER, author of THE FLOWERING JUDAS and PALE HORSE, PALE RIDER, ranks as a great modern stylist and a master of the short story. A great-great-great granddaughter of Daniel Boone, she was born at Indian Creek. Texas, on May 15, 1894, and educated in Texas and Louisiana. As soon as she had learned to write, at the age of three, she began to put down stories on paper and has been doing so ever since. She has spent a great part of her life travelling and has lived in New Orleans, Chicago, Denver, Mexico City, New York, Bermuda, Berlin, Basel and Paris. This translation of THE ITCHING PARROT was begun in Mexico and finished in Basel. During the time she lived in Mexico, Miss Porter acquired a profound knowledge of the colonial history of Mexico and of the life of Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizardi, and her translation of his greatest work is not only a literary achievement of the highest merit but a work of impeccable scholarship. In addition to having written some of the finest short stories in the English language, she is a student of the life of Joan of Arc and medieval France, of the theocratic state in Massachusetts, and the life of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Her stories have been translated into several languages and her reputation as a writer is international. Miss Porter at present makes her home near Saratoga Springs. New York, where she devotes her time to writing and to her farm, situated near the historic battlefield of Saratoga where one of her ancestors helped to defeat ‘Gentleman Johnny’ Burgoyne during the American Revolution. inventory #2582. About this Item: University of Georgia Press, United States, 2008. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Between 1920 and 1958 Katherine Anne Porter published more than sixty-five book review, many of which are now largely inaccessible. Although several such pieces have appeared in earlier collections of Porter s nonfiction writings, never have so many of Porter s reviews--nearly fifty--been made available in a single volume. Collectively the review reveal Porter s opinions on topics ranging from the nature of art and the place of the artist in politics and society to feminism and the role of female artists. Particularly evident in the reviews are the critical principles that guided her own work as well as her judgments of the works of other writers. In her introductory essay Darlene Harbour Unrue provides important biographical information on Porter, traces her career as a reviewer, and links critical assumptions in the reviews to the themes and techniques of Porter s fiction. Other scholars as well have regarded Porter s critical reviews as valuable tools both for analyzing the fiction and for constructing a portrait of Porter the artist, primarily because Porter produced so little fiction (three collections of short stories and novellas, Flowering Judas, The Leaning Tower, and Pale Horse, Pale Rider, and a novel, Ship of Fools ). In the preface to the first collection of her nonfiction writings, The Days Before, Porter herself urged readers to look closely at her nonfiction, for there they would discover the shape, direction, and connective tissue of a continuous, central interest and preoccupation of a lifetime. Most of the reviews--which appeared in such publications as the New York Herald Tribune, the New York Times, the Nation, and New Masses --she apparently undertook for financial reasons, but occasionally she would agree to review a friend s latest offering. She published no reviews after the success of her best-selling novel, Ship of Fools. Porter s scope as a reviewer was impressively broad. Because she lived in Mexico City during the revolution, had known Diego Rivera, and had studied primitive Mexican art, she was often called on to review books on Mexican art and on the revolution. Porter also reviewed many books by or about women. Her reviews of the Short Novels of Colette and Katharine Anthony s translation of Catherine the Great s memoirs are particularly noteworthy for her comments about women artists and her expression of admiration for women who flout traditional roles. These collected reviews illustrate the evolution of one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century and will interest not only Porter scholars but also anyone who appreciates her fiction.
