About this Item: Plon, Paris, 1965. Broché, 18,5cm x 12cm, 127pp. "Bon état. (Coll. Les Débats de notre Temps). Première édition. L'auteur (1913-2012), philosophe, historien de l'art, est né dans une famille athée. A 14 ans, il se convertit au protestantisme et devient Président des Etudiants Chrétiens, une association protestante militante. En 1933, il adhère au Parti Communiste, dont il va devenir un des idéologues officiels (membre suppléant du Comité Central -CC en 1945, membre du CC en 1950, membre suppléant du Bureau Politique -BP en 1956, membre du BP de 1961 à 1970, date de son exclusion du Parti suite à sa condamnation de l'invasion soviétique en Tchécoslovaquie). Spécialiste des questions religieuses du PC avec Gilbert Mury, il imagine petit à petit une sorte de convergence entre la foi et le marxisme. Dans les années 70, il se convertit au catholicisme, puis à l'Islam fin 1982. Auteur de plusieurs ouvrages antisionistes dans les années 90, il est condamné pour antisémitisme en 1998. Le Concile Vatican II a posé le problème du dialogue de l'Eglise catholique avec le monde, et dans son Encyclique "Pacem in Terris", le Pape Jean XXIII s'est adressé, au-delà des catholiques, "à tous les hommes de bonne volonté". L'auteur répond dès lors "fraternellement à un appel fraternellement adressé à tous" (p.10) et s'interroge sur les possibilités, les limites et les perspectives d'un dialogue entre marxistes et catholiques, un dialogue qui "pour être fécond, doit être exigeant" (Quatrième de couverture). François Mauriac écrira à propos de cet ouvrage: "je dois convenir que l'on ne peut pousser plus loin que Roger Garaudy l'honnêteté intellectuelle et la liberté de l'esprit.
